Looks a good signing on paper (we've had plenty of those before though)
Be interesting to see what Birighton fans made of him.
If he is a central midfielder (presuming he is?) he can be no worse than the 7 or 8 existing ones in the squad (fingers crossed, anyway....)
Good luck to him though.

Given that some Barnsley fans put him in their worst 11 since promotion then i'm not holding out much hope

Stoke supporter here (again), with a bit of information on Diego.
He's a bit of a strange one really. Technically, there's nothing wrong with him. He seems a decent passer of the ball, a decent tackler and a perfectly adequate athlete. However, when we first saw him at Stoke, he simply didn't have the first clue about how to play in our system. I don't just mean that the games passed him by, I mean that we were playing lower league opposition in the League Cup and he didn't know where he was supposed to stand or who he was supposed to track and he pretty much permanently had two or three of his team-mates shouting at him for all the time that he was on the pitch. Consequently, he's failed to make the grade at Stoke so far, as we play with a very rigid, deep lying central midfield, and he failed to make the grade at Barnsley. I think Brighton supporters said that he was by far the worst footballer they'd ever seen. Apparently he speaks better English than when he first came over (there's plenty of stories in our local newspaper about his inability to speak English getting him in trouble with the police for having rowdy parties - apparently the two things are linked) so he should adapt a bit better this time.
If this sounds like a very negative review, there is a bit of a twist to this tale. The other week we played Valencia and sent over our reserves to play the return leg at the Mestalla. We abandoned the rigid 4-4-1-1 and played in a sort of 4-3-3, purely because that was the only formation that the squad lent itself to. It has to be said that he was the best player on the park that night and despite the defeat, we actually outplayed Valencia until he went off. The difference was the system, because he was able to bomb forwards and escape our midfield 'cage' knowing that the two other midfielders would be back to cover for him. In the more fluid system, where shape and positioning weren't quite as important, he looked a very impressive player. Consequently, quite a few of us wanted to see him given a chance in the first team, but our manager insists that he needs another year of lower league football. Hopefully he'll come back with some idea about fitting into a system and we'll be able to use him next season.
Best of luck.

One of our major problems this season had been central midfield and its lack of attacking threat. Our midfielder's have been happy to sit back and offer hardly any attacking intent at all so from what you have said he sounds to be exactly what we need. Someone to get forward and push us on instead of playing crap slow football with an embarrassingly deep midfield.

So he can only play as an attacking midfielder because he is clueless in a deeper central midfield position. Suggests he will be taking Arfield's place, which shouldn't have even been Arfield's place anyway. Higginbotham must be fuming

At least he sounds like a change from our other central midfielders, who appear to be only defensive ones because they have no clue about how to get forward
Also seems as though we will continue with 3 central midfielders...
Not sure why we still haven't found a central midfielder who is adequate both offensively and defensively but there you go.
Let's hope he proves a success.

sounds decent, never heard of him before though so not getting too excited about it. just because hes had a bad spell at barnsley doesnt put m off though, loads of players are terrible at one club but then amazing at another so hopefully he will fit in here.

So not a defensive/holding player at all, we will play 1 striker up front and 3 attacking midfielders/wingers? I hope the 442 brigade will be happy! Sounds good to me.

Not sure why we still haven't found a central midfielder who is adequate both offensively and defensively but there you go. Name me some League One midfielders that do this? Even in Premiership they either hold or attack depending on the formation. On Wednesday Chelsea had Essien holding, whilst Mata bombed on. Lampard was the one that did both but he's fucking class. What most teams need is a central balance and Grayson might just have found the person to give us that.

I assume he can do the basics of defending that the rest of our fit central midfielders can't - i.e. tackle, mark, good positional sense, fit enough for 90 mins? That's what we need more than anything.

Bit of a mixed bag of reviews but if he's the attacking midfielder in a 433 kind of formation, don't we already have a suitable player in Higgs??

Just spoke to our caretaker who's seen him a fair few times in the reserves and Europa League - says he really rates him - good footballer, two very good feet, far too good quality for Premier reserves and should be excellent at our level, as long as we try to play football! (it sounded all so good until the little caveat at the end!)

Hoping he plays in a 442 and one of the other hundreds of defensive midfielders we've got can sit back and defend. Boll*cks to balanced play now, if we want to make a push for 2nd we might as well just go and attack teams or we wont get anywhere.

I wouldn't call him am attacking midfielder. In Uruguay he was an uncompromising ball winning midfielder. I'd say that if anything he's a box to box player.
