I am curious why some posters think we will be relegated next season? Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard work in Championship but would like to know the reasons. Because (If Wagner stays) we will have a manager who has totally lost any idea of how to play effective attacking football.

I won't throw a fit of pique if it doesn't happen, but I'd be tipping us to go back up automatically.
Goalkeepers: Think we're OK in that department as things stand. Hoping Lössl will stay.
Defence: With only 4 or 5 clubs outside the Top 6 noticeably better in the GA column, I think it's fair to say we already have a useful PL defence. And DW will now know what a PL-type defence looks like. Really hope we don't have to overhaul this department too much, can see most of the German contingent staying (Durm maybe might fancy returning to the BL). So with the 2 young lads having just come in and hopefully providing good cover, I can see only minor amendments (Stankowic can cover Zanka, but a Kongolo replacement would be good?) here. So two central defenders needed for the squad.
Midfield: I can see more amendments here, think we'll need a new playmaker with Mooy and Billing surely being tempted by a PL offer. With some superb performances in the Germany U-21s, I can see PL or BL sides making offers for Sabiri (though he'd be well-advised to stay imo). So I think we'd be looking at maybe three replacements here (think Pritchard will stay).
Attack: Not sure about Mbenza but I'm hoping he'll stay, as will Mounié. Depoitre wants away and it's hard to see Diakhaby staying. So maybe just the two needed.
So even BEFORE money is cashed in on assets leaving the Club, before one signing is made and with the parachute money also to be added, a conceivable line-up would be looking something like this:
------------------------Lössl
Hadergjonaj----Stankovic-----Schindler------Löwe
--------------Hogg------------Bacuna
--Kachunga------------Pritchard---------Mbenza
-------------------Mounié
Going by what I've seen in the Championship this season, imo, that's an 80 point team before new faces arrive with the 50-70 million potential spending money (think it's far more likely that this amount won't need to be used, though). With a conservative estimate that 30 million of that is spent on recruitment, there's absolutely no reason to believe that we won't have a 90 point team next season.

Is that mid table in the premier league? You are aware there’s a massive difference in the two leagues aren’t you?

The 14 who have voted auto going up, the Drs will be back open 1st thing in the morning. I suggest you restock your medication. They can’t as they’re already taking the crazy 17 who had us being close or relegated to league one.

Given the likely remnants of the squad, the negative effects of relegation, potential change of manager and the number of good quality teams in the Championship, I would be genuinely surprised if we finished above the bottom 8. Anyone who thinks we would finish in the top 8 clearly has no idea what the Championship is like.

No doubt the Squad would be decimated by big wage players leaving. As for not knowing what the championship is like, it's only 2 years since we were in it. It's a bloody difficult league to get out of for sure.

Can you expand on that, I really do not know what is disrespectful? He has gone from a positive happy individual, full of new and inventive ideas, to a negative inward looking fairly downbeat sounding guy. The teams performances reflect this. If possible please can you answer in something resembling grammatically correct English, and without reverting to capitals every alternative sentence? Just because he his feeling down beat does not mean his application or attitude his at fault. As for my English well I agree about the capitals but hey I will try to do better!.lol

Like anyone in charge you are bound to be downbeat after the run we have been on but his attitude and application in the club has not changed but I can see why you think differently bu like us all he is human

For three you continue to make yourself look stupud. Your opinion of what looks stupid is irrelevant. That doesn’t offend me in any way. Negative people always get defensive or aggressive when they’re called out for their negativity. They feel comfortable and safe being negative but don’t like it when anyone points it out. We weren’t mid table last time we played in the championship and we have many better players now. There’s no rationale for a mid table finish in the division below in which we were 17th best funded and next year will be 5th-10th best funded and top 5 in terms of squad capability. Just saying mid table because that’s what happened to Stoke with a terrible ageing disinterested squad or some other rationale is at best lazy and at worst unnecessarily and unjustifiably negative. Football is a financial business these days. Clubs perform mostly in line with their funding status. To not take account of this is to not understand how the English game works today.

Mid table for me with a relatively modest squad and manager, but with the books balanced. And you think that’ll be acceptable to Dean Hoyle? What’s this modest squad you talk of? Modest PREMIER LEAGUE SQUAD- maybe. That’s doesn’t nit equate to a modest championship squad. You do realise the guy is one of the most successful self made businessman in the UK? He’s not the sort of guy who’s going to accept some pathetic mid table mediocrity. Haven’t you learnt anything from the last 10 years of his stewardship? Too many football fans have not woken up to the realities of how football works today.

I meant modest championship squad and modest manager as i do not think the budget would allow anything else. I actually believe we will achieve mid to lower mid table. Didnt know DH was a successful businessman though thanks for that👍

In what way is our squad a modest championship squad? We've earnt 200+ million in the last 2 years. We have £100 million in parachute payments. The whole point of getting promoted to the prem (aside from establishing ourselves) was to strengthen and secure our championship. I.e to no longer be in the position of not being able to compete financially in the championship. We will have a squad as good as Stoke, Swansea, Villa, Boro et al. We'll have a very good championship/lower prem manager. Dean won't be making the same mistakes as pre wagner again. We didn't have the budget to compete with even the lower prem teams but we most certainly will have the budget to compete at championship level. Don't take umbridge or listen to other posters because I've challenged what I find an annoying position to take. Its not personal.

you HAVE to look at being in the promotion race if you are relegated from the Premier League....
there is no other ambition that could be allowed to over ride that..
granted there is no reason for us to go banzai with the money for fees and wages but there has to be the belief that we can compete to go straight back..
not sure where would be this season right now had we been a wee bit more expansive and less fear led given we have lost in very poor games to very poor teams along the way...
we might still have been in a reasonably competitive position here..
aim low and miss your targets and you end up here or drop to a modest championship team with a modest manager..
realistic often means 'lacking any ambition or bollox'....

I dont believe we will overspend in the championship under DH. Other teams in the championship spend currently way beyond their means/ loads more than us. Spending does not guarantee success but not spending is very likely to result in failure. Some of these big spenders are likely to finish above us.... Unless the OPE rumour changes things. - then i will move my vote to playoffs😎

Nice to be called lad again though..oil of Olay is one of my secrets. The worst thing (by far) of this season has been the attitude of the fans for me. Maybe it’s changed, maybe it hasn’t (I think it has) but all season it’s been there on the board- perhaps not from you I don’t know but it’s been there all year- an underlying pessimism, sense of hopelessness, anger and resentment. Sure it’s exaggerated on a forum but it’s been prevalent at the ground too. I don’t understand it. There’s been no rationale for it- frustration yes but a lot of fans had given up after Cardiff home game. Now we’re going to be in a league below and people think we’ll be mid table. It just doesn’t stack up. Is it that most wondorous of philosophies: “prepare for the worst then you won’t be disappointed?” Who knows, but it sure makes a great hobby start to get very tiresome imo. If we’re top 6 all season will you come on and admit it was grossly and inexplicably pessimistic prediction? Similarly if we languish in mid table I’ll do the same.

Relegated with a squad 10 times better than ours and can't even get a sniff of the play offs. Some people need to curb their expectations for next season. For me I'm just happy to be able to compete on a more even playing field again

I'd definatley take mid table next season at this point in time.
I wouldnt necessarily suggest that was a bad season either.
Alot of uncertainty over Town at present. Next season is about stabilising first, then potentially looking at challenging.
Only need to see the Sunderland doc to know what expectation and pressure from fans can do. It can all go terribly wrong quickly.

Prediction of mid table still the second most popular choice after playoffs. The votes might change significantly depending on who comes in as next manger.

Prediction of mid table still the second most popular choice after playoffs. The votes might change significantly depending on who comes in as next manger. predicting mediocrity has been a thing town fans suffer from for some time.. the fact we got promoted with no real money, negative goal difference and not scoring in the 3 play off games, seems to have gone under the 'thats football' radar. Maybe because they believe Dave had it planned exactly that way? ?? Dave played to his squad and within his own ideas and tactics, the luck came along with us.. Its unlikely to happen again but something like it with more resources, more bloody goals and bypassing the play offs would do??? Maybe we invest well with reasonable sums and the players brought in fly in the division in a town shirt?? prepare to fail?? makes failure easier to take?? we should be past that now, not billy big time, but much better prepared to make a right good of succeeeding..

Reasonable points, as I said the mood will change one way or another depening on who comes in and, more importantly, what the performances and results look like until the end of the season. Give them February to settle and then I'd be looking at games like Wolves, Bournemouth and Leicester at home to get some idea of our potential for next season. Of course there may be significant transfer movement in the summer and expectations will be reset again.
