Was it that season we won away at Chesterfield? 0-1 I think, Lillis header. I remember being in the cowshed when Cowling scored against Newport. A great moment. That Chesterfield game was one of my first away games. Seem to have some vague memory of a lot of fancy dress. Beating Leeds was great of course but for me the newport game is the one from that season. Promotion decider..Crammed in the cowshed, then Cowling scores the winner at that end with just a few minutes to go. Absolute mayhem! Went home with a big chunk of the pitch under my jacket. Sorry groundsman! I was on the Kenmagra fancy dress coach. The pope was on the pitch blessing the centre spot and one of the lads dressed as a french maid was hailed away by the filth for exposing himself. The spirites didn't know what had hit em.

Town survived the previous season (81/82) by four points finishing 17th, the year before (80/81) after promotion from division 4 we almost did a double missing out in fourth (If play offs were about then, who knows?). Mick Buxton in his programme notes (htfc-heritage.com) could never put his finger on why the same squad played so well one season & so badly the next........Luckily these days, that never ever happens now!

I remember going to Chesterfield on the Special. It was my first season going to away games with mates and not my dad. I somewhat naively found myself in a group of around a dozen or so Town fans in the middle of the Chesterfield end. The first chant of 'Huddersfield' went up, the crowd parted around us, in marched the coppers and we were all escorted round the edge of the pitch and into the away end - to loud applause from the massed Town ranks. An odd experience for a gangly 16yo with zero pretentions of hard-man status. Other memories of that season: First away game on my own was to Deepdale on the Town coaches. We got a creditable 0-0 that day and I managed to get home unscathed. Leeds away in the League Cup. I've the vaguest of memories of getting the Special to Leeds, then been herded onto a fleet of Service Buses straight to Bellend Road. The Lowfields paddock was absolutely rammed that night and it went fucking mental when Cowling did the business. They kept us locked in for a while afterwards, but it didn't stop the bastards outside lobbing stuff over the wall at us - this was back before they built the cheese-wedge. Lincoln away was another ridiculously crammed terrace. The coach window smashed on the way home (can't remember whether accidentally or deliberately now) which made a long journey even longer. And colder! Bristol Rovers away. Disappointing result in front of masses of Town fans that day. Mainly memorable for the M5 grinding to a halt as loads of Town fans went straight over the tarmac to get at a load of Cardiff in the Southbound services on the opposite side. They'd won away at Chesterfield that day and were taunting us as we were both scrapping it out at the top that year. i was at all those games. The Leeds one we had to walk up to Elland road from the station.
yeah I remember being escorted from the train station ,were there 2 specials on that night ?, it seemed a long walk and as we approached the ground there was a pub on the other side a of flyover and some of their mob walked across the footbridge and were trying to start something but the police kept an eye on it and nothing happened then when we got to the ground there was a massive queue and I remember it had got past kick off time and we started singing 'let us in' then after a short while the gates were opened and what must have been hundreds and hundreds of Town fans poured in, in reality could have been a early Hillsborough there were that many trying to squeeze in

I had forgotten We just charged in. No tickets then and I suppose they has no idea how many would turn up.

". Town were poor that day and lost 2-0, that away end was treacherous on the grass/mud banking " Woeful performance that day. My old man drove as usual but couldn’t find the ground. We ended up following the town bus and paid to park at the ground. He hated paying to park. When we got to the turnstiles I just bobbed under them for free. He paid but came through with a big smile. I stood right down the front but remember the covered area being miles back.

Forgot that we had our promotion party at Bradford and lost 3-1. They gave us the home end. Was very lively that day.

Lincoln away was when I knew we had a great chance of promotion. They had won all their home games and had just beaten Bournemouth 9(nine) 0. Both teams had played the day before in a busy Christmas fixture list. Despite going 1-0 down to a cracking Glenn Cockrill (sp.?) goal, we went on to win 2-1. 11,000 gate at Lincoln was huge for them.. Another big away support, we went in a mini bus that got attacked in a traffic jam near the ground.. The Sheff Utd game with one of them up the flood lights Millwall at Home on match of the day and 5-1 win.. Almost treble their usual crowd and half the attendance were in penned into one corner of the ground.

Bradford City away last game. Already promoted but had the whole Kop End. The city centre was a war zone. Mad day, scary but exciting when you are still a teen.

Was this the game that the Town fans broke the gate to get into the ground? Belle Vue, Donny Rovers happened more than once, I think it was 79/80 the police decided enough was enough and assured Town fans “No more !” - of course that simply ensured that they will go again and they duly did. Not big, not clever just different times. It became tradition to storm the gate at Donny 😀

It's quite sad how some classic threads were lost when someone arbitrarily decided to archive old threads downatthemac.proboards.com/thread/42647What struck me was how many people who contributed to this thread are no longer with us.

We were splashing around in the fountain outside the cop shop after the game, the boys in blue then took us past Odsal Top & dumped us at a bus stop.......Luckily the Mayor of Cov was with us & plenty Town fans stopped to offer lifts back, still soaking wet.
