There is a lot of renewed optimism on here regarding getting to the play offs and possible promotion. Personally I don't think another season in league 1 would be a bad thing to give Lee time to strengthen the squad and do his thing on the training pitch.... The Championship is a very competitive league now and would hate to see us go there a season too soon and struggle.... In conclusion I think a solid conclusion to this season, a bit a strengthening and a real good go in league 1 next season would be better in the long run.

I know where you are coming from, but I don't honestly think it's ever 'too early' for promotion. If we get up, we get up 100% on merit, not by accident, so we will deserve to be in the Championship. Look at Bristol, they had a blinding second half and went up, not as favorites, but had a great first season in the Championship.
If we don't go up, it won't be the end of the world, but given the chance I would take it every time.

i dont ,idont think the championship is all that after maybe 6 teams, hull proved that, okay donny have struggled but they have been punching above their weight for 3/4 yrs now,if we wasnt to gain promotion and started with a real flier next yr which is realistic, whose to say clarks stock wont rise ?we then run the risk of losing him to a bigger club before we even get up,i say give promotion a good go this season, should never be afraid of going up.

I think the extra £4 million revenue you get from promotion kind of makes it imperative for any club to gain from promotion. Also you've got to add the pulling power of our backroom staff into the equation.. It will take some persuading for some of their targets to drop down divisions but not 'a' division.

Please God lets get out promoted asap. I don't think I could cope with another year in this division, there's only so many midweek trips to Yeovil I can take!

I think we need to get out of this division as soon as possible and we have to do everything we can to make the play offs this season. I can understand what some are saying about giving Lee time in this diviison to find his feet and improve the squad but I think with a striker and a winger coming in we are capable of going up. If we do that the championship won't be a picnic but with the right additions in the summer we could stay up there. If teams like Blackpool can go up and stay up then i am sure we can.

Christ what a strange debate! Promotion every time, and ASAP. The extra revenue will mean we are able to sign better players - bigger crowds at the Galpharm - definitely take promotion anyway we can. Look at Barnsley and how they have done since they beat us in the playoffs - consolidated in the Championship, their FA cup run - compared to us.....still midtable in League One....

The current squad would compete at Championship level with one or two additions (STRIKERS). We'll strengthen in this window in that respect anyway and should we go up Id expect another 3 or 4 quality additions in the summer to strengthen us further. IMO, if we went up this season, we'd be fine next season. Might even surprise a few ;D

Promotion for me, but, if we have to spend another year in this league it won't be the end of the world.
Make no mistake, the management team will be looking to get us up this year, so that is what we should hope for.
Gates of 20,000 would be possibe for some of the fixtures, so it has to be good for the coffers if we can do it.

IMO we would struggle without adding 2 or 3 quality players. Whilst we have strength and depth in certain areas at this level, at Championship level that would not be the case. However I cant see it being a problem attracting quality players with the backroom staff we have, and, assuming season tickets are reasonably priced ie £150-200, then we could easily get crowds of 16,000 plus week in week out.

Got to be promotion if they can get it. If not another full season wasted in this horrible league then we might not even go up after that. Your talking two years gone of Clarks contract then ! I think we will give it a right go this season, even possible automatic with a striker.

You cannot choose to get promoted - you earn it.If we get the right number of points then we go up - simple as.
Waiting another season when injuries etc could decimate your efforts?Take what you can when you can,I say (though it would have been nice to win the league so that we have the full set)

Crap holes like Scunthorpe, Yeovil, Northampton and Hereford, or Sheffield Utd/Wed, Wolves, Derby, Forest, Burnley, Preston and Barnsley(which is still a crap hole though ;D ) I know which i'd choose, had enough of the travelling to these tin pot places.

To go up I still think we could do with the following:
1 Striker 2 Mid-Field general 3 Centre Half
We struggle to score. we struggle to get the ball in mid-field and we struggle defending through the centre. I had hoped that with the new manager at the start of the season these positions would have been filled. Looking at past stats shows our goal differences season after season are poor.
Promotion was my dream at the start of the season, I still think it can be achieved.

Can't credit that this question is even being asked!!!! I have started every season (even 1970/71 & 1971/72) EXPECTING us to finish top of whatever league we happen to be in. This season is no different, I still expect us to win this (the only one we haven't won) miserable division. Come on Lee Clark & the lads.

this thread is a very good point, for me i think this is a hard division to get out of so if we do i would be over the moon and if we do we deserve to on merit, on the other hand teams have done so and struggled this season but i think we have a good backroom staff that could cope with this and bring in the experience and type of players we need.
i dont think we are a club that would fluke promotion and get wooped every game i have faith in the managment team that they could do the job in the championship no matter how much preperation they have

all these people saying yes just think, in all honesty this team is not ready to play in championship with a bit of tweaking it could become a lower end of mid table for in championship for next season, Fan numbers turning up would drop we're doing ok now and still season ticket holders not turning up. Another season wouldnt be so bad in this league give the new managment team time to get the right team in place to become a good championship side. The names on the back room staff will attract the right players given time lets walk before we can run

Last time we managed promotion from this division we didn't look too strong but we eventually managed to finish in the top half..... promotion every time

Bugger all this 'were not ready' lark Personnally I would be more happier with Lee Clark plotting a Championship consolidation season in 2009/10 rather than chasing division 1 promotion. Bristol City and Blackpool have both managed in there first season to hold there own. If the opportunity is there for promotion this season than we should grab it with both hands!

If we fail to make it THIS season, we will have no God given right to go up NEXT. You take it when it comes. Worry about The Championship when it happens. Our management/coaching staff will certainly have the know-how to deal with it, so the sooner the better for me!
