Ben Thornley was superb when he first arrived, nowhere near a contender for worst ever. I actually quite liked Martin Smith too, wasn't a bad footballer.
Hodoutou is the obvious shout, Bruce got conned by his agent, and it turned out he had asthma and couldn't run for more than 5 minutes without dieing. Bit of an Ali Dia situation.
Junior Mendes was also a terrible, terrible footballer.

Stuart Hicks was gash.

Was this the same Smith who Town bought to replace Stewart and then found he couldn't score a goal to save his life ?? Thornley was dire - only Town winger I ever saw who could not beat a man.

Can't believe you've offered up the likes of Ben Thornley and Martin Smith quite liked them both tbh. What about in no particular order.
Gordon Tucker Andy Duggan Mark Wells Chris Hurst John Kelly
and more recently
Fola Onijube Gary Harkins Lee Ashcroft Kevin Gallagher

Kevin Sharp - also has the most ironic surname of any players I can think of.
Also, anyone who thinks Thornley and Smith are anywhere near the worst players either hasn't been to many matches or likes a pint or ten before the game.

There's a few contenders for this particular title! Des Hamilton, Chris Hay, Junior Mendes, Gareth Evans & Kevin Sharp (and some say Williams is a bad left-back...) Fola Onibuje, Mark Ward (fought with Tommy Cowan down at Wolves), Jon Newby, Alex "Dire" Dyre, the list goes on...

Martin Smith and Ben Thornley were both extremely talented footballers and would undoubtedly been far more successful in their careers but for injury problems.

'The only town winger who couldn't beat a man', you obviously never watched Gary Barnett or Mark Barham.

Thornley was dire - only Town winger I ever saw who could not beat a man. Martin Smiths record at Town was 29 goals in 80 games, not bad if you ask me. Better than our strikers are doing at the moment by a long way.

He was a very good player who unfortunately was very often injured

To this day I'm still convinced that Brian Horton signed the wrong "Hurst" from Emley. There was another "Hurst" (possibly Chris' brother?) who went on to sign, and score goals for, Ayr United up in Scotland. I'm sure it was he Horton thought he was signing! Jacko gave him back to Emley.... ;D!

Martin Smith was BY FAR our best player in the Wadsworth season. One of the best players in the division that year. Other than then he was never fit! Thornley is still the most exciting player Ive seen play for us during that loan spell. Every time he got the ball you were on the edge of your seat. Hed either do some dazzling piece of skill to make an opposition player look stupid, score, set up a chance, or get sent off. Not quite the same when he came back after hed had a bad injury and hed lost that instant turn of pace he'd had but he was still a decent player and scored some cracking goals ( Wolves in the last minute springs to mind).
Anyway if you put every town player in order of crapness, neither of them would be any where near the bottom half.
The worst player Ive ever seen represent this club was Michael Williams by a mile. He wouldn't have got in a half decent pub team yet somehow earned a living as a pro footballer.

The only one of the first five that deserves to be on the list is Greenhalgh, he was bad. JD wasn’t a bad player.

Martin Smith and Ben Thornley were both extremely talented footballers and would undoubtedly been far more successful in their careers but for injury problems. Have to agree! When Smith was fit he was a class act; I also know that Thornley was rated very highly at Man Utd and would probably have gone on to be a first team regular at Old Trafford had he not broken his leg in a reserve team game against Blackburn, which kept him out of the game for months and months. Having recovered (eventually) and after a few substitute appearances for United (some in the Champion's League) he came on loan to us and looked a fantastic player. I was delighted when we signed him permanently. He may have gone "off the boil" somewhat over the next few seasons but I wouldn't rate him as one of our worst players of all time.
