Then the only ones to blame will be KMC highways dept.
Just driven on what I would call major routes, Penistone Rd, Wakefield Rd, Ring Rd, New Hey Rd and decided to turn round because by the time I get back the same roads will be iced over and treacherous...
Reason I say that is, even after less snow than forecast fell overnight, them roads above are in virtually the same condition as they were 24 hours ago when the snow was thumping down.
Spoke to KMC to lodge a complaint and got soft soap, wouldn't tell me how many gritters they have in service at any one time.
I suppose living in a Town near the edge of the Pennines and with the highest motorway in England you can forgive them for only getting a couple of bags of rock salt in every winter.
Was told they were focusing on major routes when I phoned and explained side roads were less of a priority. I bloody understand that, so why are the major routes in and out of town so crap?

They ploughed my road yesterday when there was little snow on it. Today when theres a few inches and cars are getting stuck, there is no sign of the plough  |

I'm no council apologist but just wondered if it would be wasted grtitting now? If the main roads are passable now wouldn't it be better doing it a bit later on before it starts to freeze again, so the grit doesn't have time to wash away? Just a thought.

The buses aren't running from the bus station as the roads are just too dangerous for them to negotiate, particularly as the temperature is dropping rapidly. When I left the town centre this morning the number of vehicles unable to get any purchase on Westgate was alarming. Spoke to union rep for the buses and he claimed that Kirklees have run out of salt for the roads.

Would it be that big a deal if it was postponed? we've already played more games than most other teams in this league and it would give the new players a few more days training with the squad to settle in and get some understanding going. Every cloud and all that...

When I left the town centre this morning the number of vehicles unable to get any purchase on Westgate was alarming. Spoke to union rep for the buses and he claimed that Kirklees have run out of salt for the roads. and its only gonna get worse-if the club think about conditions on the roads away from the stadium (wakefield road,town,etc) they'll call it off cos it sounds like on roads into town its sheet ice as well,and it probly wont get any better |

We don't have the best council by any stretch. The whole schools fiasco in North Kirklees was evidence enough of that.
30,000 public sector employees for a population of around 350,000
whereas Leeds has 35,000 employees for a population of about 800,000
Better to spend our money on a gay,lesbian,ethnic minority,wheelchair bound cross dressers workshop ,than buy another gritter.

I live in Mirfield and work across from the stadium, I had to get bus to work as couldn't get car out and saw no sign of any gritters this morning.
I caught the 203 and that had trouble on some of Mirfield's roads (Nettleton/Nab Lane/Stocksbank)
If they have any sense then the match will be called off for everyone's safety bearing in mind what the roads and pavement's are like.
We tried gritting the front of our building this morning and it was pretty much pointless - even Kirklees have cancelled what courses they had planned to hold at our place!

I live on a main bus route and haven't seen a gritter at all. Luckily we have quite a heavy traffic flow so it has been kept reasonably clear.

Think some are overeacting. Yes its pretty bad but not as bad as people are making out. I got in this morning from Scapegoat Hill (no 4x4). Took it steady (2nd gear until Manchester Rd) but not any major problems. Would imagine it can only get better until cold sets in after tea..
Agree that gritting system needs looking at. I saw 1 on Manc Rd..

Just drove back from Tamworth after staying over there at the weekend and the roads have been clear (Mostly Motorway) the most hazardous bit was probably driving through Flockton towards Hudds...and then my road but I don't expect that 'un to be clear.

live in clayton west the main wakefield road is clear but roads in village like skate tracks the kmc gritters are no where to be seen just like the police probably turn up in a couple of days when its too late

The amount of council tax I pay these muppets to help fund a council that is, from a risk assessment perspective, highly likely to have an occurence of snow in the winter and should therefore take the appropriate mitigating actions (ie buy lots of grit and have sufficient grit wagons to cover X miles of road at any one point on time etc.). To the best of my knowledge grit doesn't have a sell by date, therefore in a milder winter there will be a surplus for the next winter. KMC/Highways will always find something else to spend this budget on, unless it's something to do with the bizarre accounting methods of public sector budgets... The state of the roads this morning was nothing short of diabolical, allowing for the fact that; a) they announced school closures for today yesterday. b) they still have remnants of snow on the roads that have clearly not been ploughed thoroughly, despite the fact that the ploughs/gritters have been out since 5AM when they would have had covered the area I'm talking about in 30 mins.. c) we live near the Pennines, so not really a shock to see weather like this. Maybe it's like everything else you find in life nowadays, that the risk is balanced against cost. Something which needs to be done of course, but I feel that the cost is factored above the risk in these instances and maybe KMC take the view that it's easy enough to let the insurance companies take the brunt of all the minor claims for bumps etc (ultimately bumping up people's premiums). I'm severely pi**ed off with the take take take attitude of this council. Or maybe it's also their lack of understanding the 7 P's... |

I posted on off topic. I live on the A635 new mill road and first time i saw a gritter or plough was at 630ish last night when w bus was stuck in the snow! much ggod it did as by 10 it was covered again! They've gritted this morning so its OK but kirklees are useless! Why pay the council tax? No grit in the bins either so its a struggle to get out of my house!

not so long ago all the villages round us had the farmers contracted to kmc to help out in such events most had vehicles set aside for snow never a problem like this till sum brite spark came up with getin rid of them thus the state of the roads last 2 days

Personaaly i'd rather them be underperpared once in 10 years then waste more money. |

As for KMC, I really would like them to explain exactly what I've received in the terms of fringe benefits in the last 20 yrs...
A lovely municipal park to take the kids to every sunday, Greenhead, Beaumont, Ravensknowle?
A refuse service that works like clockwork.
Helpful and simple guidance, website, contact no's etc...
Clean streets.
Clean, safe & clear roads (particularly in winter).
Acknowledging there have to be re-generation schemes (partly funded by CG/Euro schemes as well of course...) I can't honestly say any of the above have been in evidence over the last few yrs. Plenty of hot air in the examiner about these things, but little action.
Don't imagine they'll be any worse than other councils, but if they're all this bad, they may all as well be 4 star rated councils as they seem to proud of telling us.
And to Steve about being ill prepared 1 in 10... Gritters are for ice & cold, not snow, so being under-prepared 1 in 10 is not a valid argument IMO. The complete lack of gritters today would seem to point the fact that we're under-prepared.
Maybe the answer is to have pink fluffy gritters that make a statement to the community, so they can gain funding from the lottery or the arts council. bit like that bint who got £5k to put orangle plastic sheets on Castle hill a few years back. I see that £5k was well spent and she's probably gone on to become an ambassador for orange plastic sheet art all over Europe, if not the world...

I suspect that the number of gritters/snow ploughs have been reduced in recent years as a cost saving exercise. I suspect this, because I live in Longwood on a bus route that has always been cleared and gritted using a snow plough in the past, but not this time. Even if they have run out of grit, that wouldn't stop them clearing the roads using snow ploughs, but they don't appear to have done so. I suspect that is because they don't have enough to cope, even though in the past they did. As for school closures though, you can't blame Kirklees Council for that, the decision is taken by the head teacher of each individual school. |

Actually, it's quite often the site supervisor (caretaker in old money), who normally has the final say. If schools close it's normally because the site is dangerous (similar to the only reason that the Town match might have been called off was due to dangerous surrounding areas).
We've been closed for three days in my eleven years at my school and on each day, the decision was taken at about 9.30am, having braved the elements to get in. Times like this that I wished I lived in Kirklees!!
