"Highest league gate at stadium"
Piece goes on and reckons highest league attendance at old Leeds Road was 25,101 against Newcastle in May 1984.
I'm sure we had circa 28K for Barnsley and similar for Man City before we had the epic cup drama with the Blues.
Anybody got any links to the attendances?

Anybody got any links to the attendances? highest was 67000 against the gunners, surely it meant SINCE the geordies came? although that was a cup replay i think surely we have had plent y crowds bigger than the newcastle one.

It say's "for a league fixture at the current stadium" & "it was the highest for a home game since Newcastle"
Mis-quote, now know how the stars feel

I'm sure our average Div 1 home gates were over 30,000 in about 1951 and I have been in a number of higher League attendances at Leeds Road Man Utd,L***S in 1970/71
Not to mention cup games against Sheff Weds 1966 over 50,000, West Ham about 1968-28,000 and Stoke 1971 about 40,000.

I was at the Barnsley game circa 1981 when we had 28,902. Probably our best attendance outside the top flight?

thought it was a cowling header following a save by their goalie from austin - or does my memory fail me? I stand corrected, you are correct in DC being the scorer, however my attendance was spot on. Sad how you remember daft things like attendances and then things you think are 100% nailed on are incorrect... Age?

Been in crowd of many 60.000 plus at Leeds Road especially in 70s. Did you spend the 70's in a halucinogenic drug induced coma? Are you still in one now?

Stanton scored quite a few of them goals - I'd say it was his trademark...
A bit like the "skinning the full-back" runs of Simon Baldry...

cowling scored v barnsley 28901
in 70-71 Town had 3 crowds over 40000 Leeds Manu Stoke FA cup
i presume the article refers to League games. Since that Newcastle game I can think of at least 3 cup crowds higher than Saturday:
v Derby at MacAlpine v Liverpool at MacAlpine v Man City Leeds Road second replay under MacDonald.
Towns highest ever crowd is 67037 v Arsenal FA cup, but the highest league crowd is around 54000 I think. Unlike now FA cup games in the past attracted bigger attendances than league games. Incidently that 67037 crowd puts Town around about 12th in the highest ever ttendance league for each club - 10000 more than LUFC have ever achieved, and they didnt get that till their glory days of the late 60s.

Towns highest ever crowd is 67037 v Arsenal FA cup... A friend of mine's Dad would often tell us a tale of how "A gate was forced open by the crowd outside the ground and loads of fans rushed in before the police could close it. It's thought the actual crowd figure for the Arsenal match could have been upto 5,000 higher than the actual number given." Never found out whether this is true or not! Anyone else heard a similar story?

You could say the Arsenal game was the transition between Huddersfield's fall from greatness and the ascension of Arsenal as a true power in the game of football.
The game was massively anticipated especially with the massive importance and romance of the FA cup coupled with the 'Chapman' factor. Plus it was something ridiculous like 18 years since we'd been beaten at home in the FA cup - that in itself is an incredible stat.

Anyone else heard a similar story? It is true, I read an account of it in the original Football Gorunds of England by Simon Inglis, several taken to hospital. Inglis compares Leeds Road with 2 other largish grounds Ninian Park and The Den, and finishes with sentance - "neither had seen such glories as Leeds Road" which always gets me shivering.
