Squad numbers didn't start in the football league until 99/00. The first Steve Bruce season was the first in which we had squad numbers and therefore names on the back of shirts.

Some very good memories there. I've got some photos from a few days after the Blackpool match when me, my brother and my dad went to look at the new stadium. The gates to Leeds Road were left open and we could see another family playing with a football on the pitch so we went and joined in. Got loads of pictures of me and my bro in the old dugout and standing in the goal infront of the cowshed. I could very well be the last person to ever score a goal at that ground cos they took the nets down soon after we'd been asked to leave. So forget Phil Starbuck, PompeyTerrier should be the man in the history books!

The toilets behind the terrace were one of the worst places in the world!! A couple of walls and no roof (i'm sure you were just basically peeing on someones back wall). God help you if it was chucking it down and you needed to go ;D

Walking up the long stairs at the back of the terrace and emerging out into the ground was an awesome feeling, it seemed much more of an event than it does nowadays where you basically can already see into the ground 'before you get in'.

Also at the end of the match, being up on the top of the terrace by the exits so you could make the mad dash down the (very steep) steps to get to the car.
I always stood at the same barrier on the terrace and always spoke to everyone around us. Despite doing this for more years than I care to mention, I never knew the names of the people I was talking to. Quite bizarre.

Great stuff fellow Town fans! All seems like yesterday that final match V Blaggers and strolling on the pitch after the match for the final goodbye and seeing grown men crying in disbelief! The Cowshed will never be matched in terms of atmosphere - what a place, especially on big match nights and when Ian Wright scored his final goal V Arsenal, he came over and waved & applauded us all in the Cowshed in respect of us lot cheering his goal.....remember that?
And does all remember the wooden pie shed at back of main stand that never had any pies left?!?!?!? Classic.
Good to see the spot I first stood as a 7 year old in the main stand at my first match V Carlisle 30 yrs ago..........superb. The only downside to the old ground was the toilets - horrendous! They weren't toilets, just walls with a trough running around the bottom on the floor - really bad (for you 'young'uns' - the pic with grass & dandelions - the bloke with the yellow t-shirt - them are the toilets on his right - open air and freezing in the height of summer!) Great pics, well done.

Is that right? Blimey! All i can remember is Cowan or someone else small who used to play up the left hand side playing for half a season with the 'A' having fallen off his 'Gola'! I wondered when this would next happen. It's like when Dr Who regenerates.

I loved that ground. The darkness at the back of the terrace added to the atmosphere. It was great. These days the ground is so sterile it is pap half the time. Look at Pozza, he tries to bring a few small flags in and he gets pounced on by a bunch of muppet stewards who stare at you all game. Imagine that in the old ground....

My dad took me to the 2 last games at Leeds Road when I was only 2 so I dont remember it but I really wish we still had it. Standing at games it much better and the atmosphere in old grounds is ten times better than new ones. Some of my favourite away days have been spent at old grounds such as York in the promotion season. I'd give anything to go back one more time and witness the Leeds Road atmosphere properly.

Despite doing this for more years than I care to mention, I never knew the names of the people I was talking to. Quite bizarre. I used to stand around the same barrier with 4 or 5 others too, then at half time we used to walk up to the other end to watch Town attacking there, and would meet up with another couple of mates who liked to watch the whole game from that end, then gradually edge on a bit in the dying moments and then it was out through the gate round the back of the Cowshed. There were some pretty bleak times where there didn't seem to be anyone within 20 feet of us, and other times you could hardly move. It was always someone job (can't remember who, certainly wasn't me, I generally arrived at about 2:55pm) to 'reserve' the space for us, but I think pretty much everyone who went had 'their own regular space' to stand, so it was never an issue, even in the larger gates. I do vaguely remember once standing in the corner between the main terrace and the open end, "cos it was open" to see what it was like, but quickly returned to my regular leaning post. The surge when a goal went in was brilliant.

If only they could do that now.

Ahh, nostalgia. Used to love this more on night games, the green of the pitch looked so bright. I still prefer evening kick offs to this day. I also used to love the smell of the smoke that hit you as you came to the top of the steps. bliss. Jeez, I sound like my dad going on about the "good old days"!

I emailed you a while back regarding your pictures. On Facebook I think you said to contact you regarding un-watermarked versions. Is it possible for me to get hold of them, I've got a collection of Leeds Road pictures going see and would like to add them too it. I won't be distributing them or anything, just for my own personal viewing, and ensuring pictures I see don't get lost. Cheers.

The atmosphere in the Cowshed was amazing - anyone remember the horrendous stick we gave the Pompey goalie one year? Was it Alan Knight?

Just brilliant pics. And not cheap to take so many in them days - no digital delete option in 1994 Also, can you imagine houses being so close to stadiums nowadays? With modern stadiums, it's all surrounded "leisure devlopment" as fair as the eye can see (used to love visiting Highbury, as this seemed to just rise up out of terraced rows, also). Wonder if we'd all be so misty-eyed if it'd have been pissing it down on that last day!

It's weird but I swear I can spot the back of my head at least three times on every picture. I miss that place too. Does anyone else remember the caption "KEEGAN IS SH*T!" spray painted on the back wall of the terrace? Happy days.

got some Leeds Road turf that i nicked after the blackpool game in my old house in mirfield!!! I'll have to go back in the dark one night and nick it back ;D ;D What a brilliant end of an era to Leeds Road too, a game against arsenal in the league cup, an escape from relegation and a wembley appearance to boot... Never fotget singing que sera sera in full voice at the carlisle game and then at every game till the final!!!!
Ex East terracesider!!!!!

"This gate will not be opened until the end of the game".
That sign in a nutshell encapsulates my early days of supporting Town. I became fond of that sign, it really focussed where I was..and where I was was leaving another game and the next matches upcoming success or failure seemingly months away.

I remember Mellor going to the police in front of the Cowshed and pointing towards the middle of the Cowshed as if to say " go do something about it" Priceless!
