80s/90s nearly bands ... Passions had a hit single then the album bombed... The other two were follow ups to "classic albums" but didn't do as well .. Great albums though.. You got any underrated albums grlf ?

Probably not to most people's taste but.
I'll go for Kid A by Radiohead. Overshadowed by Ok Computer and the bends but it is a great album which flows well and is probably my favorite radiohead album.
Muse - Origin of Symmetry. Not sure if this is underrated but is one of their lesser known albums.
Metallica - Kill em All. Most people who don't really know Metallica just know the black album and possibly master of puppets but Kill em All is such a good record and much better than anything post Master of Puppets IMO.
I almost put a Fall Out Boy album in but knew that no one would like it at all so stayed clear!
If you are mining that era Ted, I think Whats The Matter Boy - Vic Godard & The Subway Sect is an underrated gem. Its always the showy tarts who get all the attention. Happy Nightmare Baby by Opal from the 80's and more recently Heartland by Owen Pallet.

I'm glad I created this thread .... Got lots of new stuff to listen to now.. Am especially interested in the Vic Godard album.... Not sure about giant steps being underrated Bolton it was NME album of the year ! One of the best records of all time though in my opinion.. If ever an album came out of nowhere it was that... The psychedelic furs first album was great but am not aware of "book of days" so I'll have a listen... Cheers guys
Kid A is a great shout and without ndoubt their best work.
I will add to the mix 'XO' by Elliott Smith which is full of wonderful meloncholy. 'Nebraska' by the Boss is clearly his best album ever but gets overshadowed by the finger clicking Americana rubbish he has released. The number of folk who have never heard 'The Holy Bible' always staggers me too.

I'm a massive Metallica fan but not sure I agree with you on this one mate. Its the Metallica album I listen too least, what I will say about it is that it does contain some decent songs,Whiplash,Four Horsemen and Seek and Destroy which I can't stand when they play it live just keep it going too long. The difference between that Kill em all and Ride the Lightening is striking in terms of musicianship and production. If you want a underated Metallica album its "and Justice for all" which is much maligned for its crap production values, which I agree the production is shocking and the length of some of the songs are far too long.Having said all that Blackened,One and Harvester of Sorrow are belters.
As for underated albums fook me what a difficult question........
Temple of the Dog-Temple of the Dog Generation Terrorists-Manic Street Preachers Queensryche-Operation:Mindcrime Snuff-Snuff said Afghan Whigs-Gentleman The Adventures-The Sea of Love Echo & the BUnnymen-Echo & the Bunnymen
Yeah I know thats 7 but gives you summat to go on.
Oh yeah if you try and download the Snuff album or try and look up the band on the net,be very careful what you look at,you don't want the police busting your door down at 5am!!!

Fair point Ted, I was meaning underrated in that if you ask 100 people on the street about that album 99.9 wouldn't have even heard of it. I know it was massively well received by the musical press
I wish they had done some kind of 20th anniversary re-mastered edition to cut down on the reverb and gloss which ruins the production. A bit rawer and it would be truly fantastic (remove Damned Dog too).

I actually think the Manics album with "if you tolerate this" on it was underrated (its too poppy, richies not on it etc) ,, but its my favourite of theirs
Bolton i guess we could start a thread of "great albums few people have heard".. in that case
Roy Harper ---flat Baroque and Berserk Easterhouse- Contenders Merz- Moi et Mon Camion Robert Wyatt- Old rottenhat Ted Chippington - man in a Suitcase Anything by Cornershop and Microdisney
I honestly though no one would answer my OP but there have been some great suggestions... I love (and hate) DATM

Each to their own I suppose.
I started listening to Metallica when I found the black album and when I started going back and listening to old albums I found Kill em All a breath of fresh air. Probably my most listened to Metallica album after Master of Puppets. I quite like the lack of protuction and rawness of Kill em all.
I don't listen to and justice for all very much at all though so may have to give it another listen.

Great thread this. Glad you started it mate.
On "Origin of Symmetry" by Muse, I think it was voted best album of the last decade on several polls, so probably not that underrated - maybe under-listened to. I have the live version of Space Dementia on my iPod, but still trying to work out where the ending comes from (Stravinsky ??). They unashamedly acknowledge converting Rachmaninoff's Second piano concerto into Neutron Star Collision.
Another one from the 80s era that has been voted best album of all time (so in the maybe not underrated but under-listened to category) and my fave of all time, is Remain in Light by the Talking Heads.
For those not lucky enough to have wallowed in such beautiful wonderment:
I have always found the circumstances of Smith's death very suspicious. How can someone stab themselves to death? The poor guy was hopelessly addicted to smack and had a psycho girlfriend. Just about all his albums are worth checking out.
A guy who had got himself clean, was back making music and a girlfriend who sued his family for millions claiming to have been working as Smith's manager and should get his estate. Does seem strange.
To be fair, if it wasn't for a tree half way down a cliff he jumped off he would have died several years earlier.

He was a troubled man to be fair but yes it was all a bit odd. His 'suicide note' was on a post it note if i remember correctly. However he died i was fookin gutted when i heard. The worst i've felt about someone dying i didn't actually know
