The PFA player of the year nominees were announced on Monday, and to the surprise of nobody they have caused a bit of an uproar.
Personally, the first thing I would do if creating a shortlist for such a prestigious award is come up with a list of criteria. The first thing on that list would be a players contribution to his teams efforts throughout the season. Simple enough, but what would have been the first thing on my list seems to have been completely ignored by those who actually decided upon the nominations.
It clearly hasn’t been taken into consideration because there are no nominations for players from teams who have performed well above their stations this season, with Newcastle United being the team that stands out. They have punched well above their weight this season and have had some standout performers, but apparently none stood out enough to make either the Player of the year or Young player of the year shortlists.
Instead the nominations for Professional Footballers' Association Players' Player of the Year are as follows:
Sergio Aguero (Man City), Joe Hart (Man City), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd), David Silva (Man City)
The names that jump out at me are:
Scott Parker - I don’t think many people argued when he won this award last season because he was sensational for West Ham, and although he started this season well his performances have dropped harshly since Christmas. Sergio Aguero - Although rightfully nominated for Young player of the year, he has not done enough for me to warrant being nominated here. He’s scored plenty of goals, but an argument could be made that he hasn’t come up big for City when needed and could have scored plenty more. David Silva - Similar to Parker, Silva has flattered to deceive during the end of season run-in. He was a one man team at times during the early stages of the season but has gone missing when needed most, his lack of form has contributed largely to City losing their place atop the Premier League table.
The other three players nominated are difficult to argue against. However, the aforementioned players should in my opinion have been replaced with the following who would more deserving of such a prestigious nomination:
Fabricio Coloccini – The Argentinian has been a rock at the back for Newcastle, playing a pivotal role in a defence that has helped them challenge for a Champions League place. Cheick Tiote – Perhaps even more than Coloccini, the tough tackling Ivory Coast international has impressed everyone this season as the glue that seems to hold the team together. Michel Vorm – What a signing the Dutch goalkeeper looks to have been for Swansea City. At times he’s kept them in matches on his own with some outstanding performances between the sticks. Vincent Kompany - Another Manchester City player who I believe should have been nominated above the three on the list. A fantastic captain who has dragged them kicking and screaming at times throughout the season. Leighton Baines – The full-back has had a terrific season for Everton, leading many to call for him to replace Ashley Cole as England’s first choice left-back ahead of Ashley Cole. Cint Dempsey – Overlooked in the past and once again this season, the versatile American has scored 22 goals for Fulham this season.
If I had to pick three of the above players I would go with Tiote, Kompany and Dempsey, but in my opinion all six would be worthy nominees for the award. If the efforts of players like Tiote and Dempsey had been acknowledged it would have been a huge deal for both them and their respective clubs. It’s a shame that who someone plays for seems to be more important than their actual contributions throughout the season.
Right, the nominees for Professional Footballers' Association Young Player of the Year are:
Sergio Aguero (Man City), Gareth Bale (Tottenham), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Kyle Walker (Tottenham), Danny Welbeck (Man Utd)
Once again, three players stand out for me:
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - "The Ox" obviously has plenty of potential and has at times looked electric since signing from Southampton last season, but he hasn’t played enough football to warrant a nomination in my opinion. Danny Welbeck - The English forward will probably divide opinion having played plenty of matches for Manchester United and made his international debut this season. However, he's hardly set the world alight and I don't think United would have missed him had he picked up an injury. Daniel Sturridge - Similar to Welbeck the Chelsea forward has made a slight impact this season, scoring a few goals for Chelsea and looking dangerous on the right hand side of a forward three. Again though, he hasn't played as much in recent weeks and has hardly been missed.
I would have given the nod to the following three players:
Wojciech Szczesny – Arsenals goalkeeping problems are a thing of the past thanks to the young Pole who has played a pivotal role in their successes towards the end of the season. Joe Allen – An ever present for Swansea during their amazing first season in the Premier League, the Welsh midfielder has also been a stand out performer for them. James McCarthy – He has started nearly every match this season for Wigan, and although they're near the bottom they've overachieved again with McCarthy looking like a great prospect.
I despair sometimes, all three of the above players would have benefited so much from a nomination. In particular we should be trying to look after home grown talent and what better way than giving hard working players like Allen and McCarthy a nomination for such a prestigious award?
Once again it’s a case of who you play for being more important than how you actually play and how much you contribute, and it's a real shame.

Agree with all those, and to that list I would add; Robin Van Persie (who will more than likely win it) Grant Holt Demba Ba Juan Mata Ryan Taylor

It's player of the year (ie 2011) not player of the season (2011-12) though.............. That's what they're called yes, but they are actually supposed to be based over a full season, not a calendar year. Oxlade-Chamberlain for example had never started a Premier League match for Arsenal until January 2012, I hardly doubt he would have been nominated if the awards only took into account performances in 2011...

No Rhodes in the list so not worth bothering with.

Each member of the PFA makes two 'equal' nominations...I suspect a lot of the names that get to the short list are an 'easy/safe second choice'.

What about Pappis Cisse. Even though he hasn't been here long, that is some impact and if the OX can be nominated for playing so few games then so should he
He is 12th top scorer in the premiership and only played a handfull of games. Cracking signing by a gaffer that couldn't hack league one

Anyone else find it strange that Aguero is up for young player of the year when he made his debut nearly 9 years ago and is 24 in a few weeks time!

I agree with Kompany and with Dempsey and with the nominees you have put for young player of the year.
I wouldnt put tiote in there though. Cabaye for me has had a much better season.
They really have just picked players from the top teams instead of picking the top players of the season.

I'd agree, Cabaye for me also, much the better of the two this season. What a buy he's been!

Aguero has to win young player. RVP should also win player. Half the nominations are a bit cack, but I'd say both of those two deserve to win them, so the rest ofthe nominations don't really matter.

Van Persie and Aguero have to win for me and probably will do.
In my opinion the nominations should have been -
main PFA - Van Persie - has to win Kompany - immense, I would think 99% of players and managers would pick him in their premiership XI. Aguero - Adapted far better than I thought he would and a better player than I thought he was. Dempsey - been amazing this season Rooney - one of his best seasons Song - if Toure hadn't gone to the African nations and gone off the boil until the last few weeks he'd have been in but Song has stepped up a level this season. If Ba and Cisse were the same player I'd have him in but Cisse hasn't been here long enough and Ba hasn't scored since Cisse turned up which is why I'd leave them out.
Can't make my mind up out of the youngsters but 6 from - Aguero Szczesny - the best compliment for him is people have talked about Arsenal's gk problems for years and now nobody mentions it. Bale - unstoppable when on form I think he'll be off to Spain soon seems to fancy the idea as well. Allen - could do with adding a few more goals but been excellent this season. Walker - improving defensively but superb going forward. Evans - been superb since Vidic got injured and I've never thought he was up to it. Krul - almost better than Steve Harper.... McClean - probably miss out due to only having played half a season but brilliant impact. Sinclair - Championship football has done him good.

I'd agree, Cabaye for me also, much the better of the two this season. What a buy he's been! I disagree, although he has been good and has had more champagne moments than Tiote such as his goal against Man Utd, Tiote has been by far the more consistent of the 2 in my opinion. Newcastle's season has been built around him and Coloccini, when either have been missing they've struggled to be as strong and resilient as they are with them.

They compliment each other but Newcastle have been able to replace Tiote's workrate with Perch and Guthrie when needed but they have struggled to replace the creativity of Cabaye when he has been out.
