Who remembers Terry Eccles - saw him chasing a ball down the wing at Reading and he was that slow he looked as though he was going backwards! Think Michael Jackson got the idea of the moonwalk from him. I remember us signing Terry (Jennifer) Eccles and Jim McCaffrey from Mansfield Town. We'd played them in the FA Cup earlier, drawing 0-0 at Leeds Road and losing replay 2-1 with TE and JM featuring prominently. So much so we bought the pair of 'em. I recall Mansfield bringing a lot of fans to our place that day which forced Len (the Landlord of the Peacock, on Leeds Road) to open up his top room to the thirsty hordes. What made the whole thing quite ridiculous was the manner the Mansfield Town fans spoke to us because they were then in the Old Third Division and we were Fourth Division. 'Oldham Mike' had a bloody field day with that lot. Manfield bloody Town who fooking hell are you lot? Great memories!

craig maskell was the one i remember awsome, so yes i saw iwan loads thing is i never rated him that highly at the time. Maskell was a "funny" one, 30 odd goals in a season but not really popular with TOWN fans, think he was a bit like Andy Payton, I`ve scored so the fact we lost 3.1 is irrelevant, I`ve done my bit. My first Town hero was Maskell, so much so that I've got his name on the back of this year's shirt. Might go for Horne when I buy the new top.

You missed "Yes saw Dennis Law play" for the really owd boogers UTT Yup old enough to see him play, also my memory is sharp enough to be able to spell his name correctly. DENIS LAW!! Yes - you nailed me there....fingers a bit sticky on't keyboard! Actually I didn't live in the area when he played here so he was playing for Man U by the time I saw him - my second favorite player (after the very BEST!) never seen a more confident (cocky) player though but.... Early fav player for Town - mentioned several times on this thread - was the one and only Tony Leighton (sp?) I got quite a surprise a few years ago when I looked up their respective scoring records in the Centenary publication - made Alan Alan look like a sharpshooter.... Nostalgia ain't what it used to be maybe?? UTT

Chris Balderstone anyone ? Never really a favourite, went to Carlisle who then got promoted into 1st Division, as was, where he played pretty good. Don't know where he went after carlisle. Used to play cricket with him (not in same team as I was in juniors) at Paddock. He always looked cool as he turned up with his own bag and kit whereas everybody else in them days got the kit out of the club bag...odd pads, odd gloves etc..manky bat, shared 'box'....

The police in their infinite wisdom decided not to move the town fans from the open end, so the mansfield fans had a mass of town fans right next to them all game and it seemed to kick off all thru the game. didn't go to the replay as it was two days later on the monday , so difficult to organise excuses for school.

First match against Leyton Orient one snowy winters night in 82' I think it was. Colin Russell was the new signing I seem to remember scoring and being the star. Up front with Lillis with Cowling, Doyle, Stanton... God the wagon wheels were MASSIVE !

Who remembers Terry Eccles - saw him chasing a ball down the wing at Reading and he was that slow he looked as though he was going backwards! Think Michael Jackson got the idea of the moonwalk from him. Terry Eccles is one of my earliest, and he wasn`t very good ( if I`m being polite ) but there is a really good book, "Journey to Wembley" the story of the 1976/77 FA Cup by Brian James, published by Marshall Cavendish. They started with Tividale in the 1st qualifying round and stayed with the winner of each tie upto Tommy Doc`s Man Utd v Liverpool in the final. TOWN miss out on a full chapter by losing to Mansfield in Rd 1 ( as a young kid my main memory of that game was a big, black Mansfield fan dressed in a white judo suit, it was the time of Carl Douglas and his song Kung Fu Fighting, and when the aggro kicked off in the open end he took up a threatening, martial arts stance , while a Town fan in donkey jacket, jeans and doc`s simply stamped on his bare feet and then punched him out cold !!) who are featured in Rd 2 in a deby game vs Matlock Town. The author tells of the run down state of Field Mill and the fact in 6 foot high letters somebody had painted "Don`t sell Tery Eccles" across the stand. Pity Tom Johnstone didn`t heed their advice. One of the later chapters is Liverpool vs Oldham in Rd 5 and it`s pointed out how classy IAN ROBINS of Oldham is, (a couple of years before he joined TOWN). Great book to read, especially if your old enough to remember when the FA Cup 1st Round was the biggest crowd of the season rather than the lowest. :iconlol: :iconlol: :iconlol:

First one I remember was Kevin Johnstone, but I was only about 4 or 5 so my memories really start with Robins,Fletch and Kindo. Loved Iwan though, maybe because he was a fellow 6'3" ginge and only a couple of years older than me,he was a really nice lad too, used to see him down town with Mazza and Trevitt, and he was always happy to chat. Come to think of it it must be the size and hair cos Drunken Duncan was the same on friday nights in Johnnys

That Mansfield game was one of my first few Town games that I went to see. I remember it kicking off throughout the game in the open end. I went to a game a few weeks before against Bradford City at Leeds Road. There was lots of trouble at that game too. I remember a City fan carrying what appeared to be a pick axe handle. Scary times for me as a ten year old. At the same time I found going to football had a real exciting edge to it at the time. It was how it was in the seventies. The Mansfield game also had something else that was a first for me. It was the first time I had seen floodlights at a game. They came on just before half-time I think. Was quite a sight. I also went to my first away game that season at Stockport on a friday night. More crowd trouble that night too and Town won 3-2.
