Anybody else sick and ****ing tired of the way Kirklees promotes itself as a place? Without doubt, the status of Huddersfield was diminished in 1974 when Kirklees Council came into being.
Those 'welcome to Kirklees' road signs do me head in. 'Kirklees College' splattered all over Town's kit is wrong, Huddersfield Tech PLEASE.
Kirklees Priory near Clifton is in Calderdale. What a load of metropolitan bo****ks
It was mentioned on the national news t'other day when the BBC mentioned the stabbings in Marsden as being in 'Kirklees', West Yorkshire. Huddersfield has been wiped off the map !
What the ferk have people in Birkenshaw and Batley got in common with the sophisticated socialites of Holmfirth ?
Correct, places like Dewsbury and Batley should be fighting to get their identity back too. Within the sprawling boundaries of Kirklees, over 400,000 people live. Trouble is, most outsiders ain't got a clue where Kirklees is. Hmm, somewhere near Glasgow perhaps ?
You're right, its fooking irritating. Its the name of the local authority as far as I'm concerned, not a place. It's an unpleasant word aswell is 'kirklees', nasty !

Kirklees was always an unholy compromise, joining 2 distinct areas with little in common. The silly name 'Kirklees' was decided upon by grumpy old men in smoke filled rooms in 1974. About the same time the ancient Ridings of Yorkshire were abolished and Greater Manchester nicked Saddleworth. Miserable times indeed. High time Huddersfield had it's town back. Dewsbury and Spen likewise.

Thats ironic- saying Spen should have its town back!

It wasn't totally silly or made up though, given there was a Kirklees Hall in the 16th Century and Kirklees Priory in the 1200s...Kirklees was a real existing place that was part of the parish of Dewsbury back in the day.

Quite a lot of the signs have been changed now to '' Welcome to Huddersfield '' well they certainly have around the Fixby/Bradley area. This by the way was after a campaign by my Friend n yours Kenneth Davy :giggle:

'Kirklees', a meaningless name plucked out of the air in 1974 when 'Huddersfield' was dropped from the council's name so as not to insult the areas we were now attatched (Dewsbury & that...) The Kirkleesification of Huddersfield has been going on ever since .
I couldn't care less either way, but there are plenty of people in "North Kirklees" who rather wish Huddersfield would fk right off, so they could back to being from Dewsbury / Batley. Strange I know as they're real shitholes, but you can't help where you're from.
