Thinking ahead to the new season and "i'm so excited i just can't hide it" - sorry got carried away - whilst there is a lull on the tranfer front got thinking about where i can sup copious amounts of one of the best things that we produce locally or anywhere in the Country - real ale.
Last 3 or 4 seasons started pre-match at the Station Tavern/Kings Head and congrats to Bruce & Michelle for the best pint in Town IMO. At times, last season, it was really busy 3/4 deep at the bar especially when the odd stag/hen party were in on the real ale trail or on the odd occasion when there was a good away support. Can be difficult to get a pint and that's not a critcsm of the staff.
Post match has been split in more recent times between the Sportsman & Station Tavern.
I can only see these two pubs getting busier and would like to know if anybody has any other reccomendations in Town where the beer is equally as good? Still going to go to these two but wouldn't mind having another regular or two.

Grove - never too busy on match days and only 7 minutes walk from the Station. Rat & Ratchet - rivals the Station for its best pint tag (IMO) Vulcan - reasonable cheap real-ale. Herberts Bar (old Minstral) nominated for Camra pub of the season. Slubbers 'Spoons The old West Riding/Barking Spider has good real-ale on Scisset Terrier might get his finger out and make that offy into a real pub before the season starts.
Hope this Helps!

The Grove Inn gets a thumbs up from me   . Also don't forget that the new beer shop in the town centre will be open on matchdays, not sure how busy it will get or how big the bar is but might be worth a look.

Thanks for that Sapphire Blue. Will give the old Minstral a try - not been in for years plus Scisset Terriers new spot. Tried the Rat about a month ago one Saturday afternoon with 3 mates and between us must have tried all the beers. Always a cracking pint and the foreign lad can't half pull a good pint

What if you aren't fussed about real ale and want to throw 5 pints of Stella down yer neck as fast as possible?

usually drive from leeds with old man and go straight into the ground but may come earlier on the train for a few games this season and have a few sherberts in hud before the match, should be lively..

MelSmooth I can highly recommend the Bradfield Farmers Blonde at the Station Tavern - about as close as real ale gets to lager. They shift about 500 pints a week - still trying to work out who sups the other four :source:

Does anyone know if any of these places DON'T let kids in?? I go pre-match with a (well behaved) 12 year old, and the pub we've frequented (Sportsman) last few years has been a bit hit and miss this last season and I fancy a change. Used to do Head of Steam for many years before that. One sorry season in the George Hotel in between when we got fed up of Head of Steam. It feels like its time for a new beginning!

Rat & Ratchet's the best by a country mile!
13 beers, usually includes 5 of their own brewed on the premises, with White Rat at £2.25 per pint.

Always the Slubbers. Had my first 'legal' pre-match pint in there 15 years ago and been going pre-match with my dad whenever we go to games ever since. I'll admit that there've been some hit and miss periods over the years in terms of atmosphere but wouldn't go anywhere else as it's now tradition and part of our pre-match routine. Plus my dad would moan if he didn't get his pie and peas with mint sauce there!

Not really a real ale type place, but the Zephyr down by the Kingsgate centre usually has some interesting beers on. Rat & Ratchet's a cracking pub, but it's too far from the ground. Can't beat The Grove IMO - don't tell everyone tho', part of the appeal it's that it's not packed out on match-days.

Love the Grove and Rat & Ratchett, but pre-match is ALWAYS the Slubbers.

Did the Slubbers for two seasons up until 3/4 seasons ago before switching from driving to the match to coming in on the train. At the same time it changed landlord and the beer quality went down a bit as well - not that Timmy Taylors can ever be a poor pint. Lurv the beer, the pub and the great atmosphere but a bit out the way for me on a match day now.
The Grove i have not had chance to visit for a while - will do so this season.
The Rat has always been a favourite of mine for a long time but need to be stopping out for a bit longer to call in as it is a bit out of the way when using the train.
Chuffin 'ell - all this talk is making me thirsty

Done the gas club for the past twenty years , but feel its slowly doing a bradford city . Lacks atmosphere , most draught beers are shite , plus rising membership and ale prices . Think its time for a change this season , now who mentioned pie n peas at the slubbers

We should have our license around early to mid september byut most weekends will be covered between now and then.
All depends on the council managing to keep hold of documents submitted via the kirklees planning portal and not lose them etc etc etc

What if you aren't fussed about real ale and want to throw 5 pints of Stella down yer neck as fast as possible? Definitely swerve The Sportsman then , probably the worst pint of lager I've ever had and they only stock a tiny selection of spirits. It really is real ale or nothing in there
