If only someone had invented mobile phones and the internet in time for the young Bonnie Langford to have been murdered and then had her phone hacked to avoid this argument.

Shoe That made oi larf
Merk.... You usually adopt a gainsay stance for interwebbery effect, but your dismissal of the deletion of text messages that led parents who were already demented with worry with the hope that their child was alive is quite astonishing
I can, therefore, only come to the following conclusions:
a) you are a child murderer who is still 'at large'
or
b) your surname is Belfield and they allow you Internet access
or
c) you have a sister called Rebekka and you refuse to watch Eastenders on personal grounds
or
d) you have never had kids...in which case, I live in hope of your permanent sterility
The behaviour of persons yet to be charged at the NOW/police/whoever else is abhorrent on every moral, legal and ethical level.
Finally.... I am anticipating your next argument which will probably be along the lines of 'people in the public eye are fair game for hackers as the public pay their wages in box office returns/season ticket fees/taxpayers money.
My taxes will pay for your healthcare when they drag you kicking and screaming to a lock up unit with a hypodermic syringe full of antipsychotic meds sticking out of your bare arse, so, interim, if you are having an affair behind the Missus' back or you wank over kiddieporn, it's in the public interest for you to disclose this to we who foot the bill
'Now' would be a pretty optimal time

(apologies for some of the poor grammar. I can't see my iPhone screen very well in the sunshine and I have had four champagnes with breakfast after dragging my ass out of a screaming gay bar at 3.30am. I am getting too old for this)

Phone hacking is phone hacking. No one is fair game.
5 years later now that its dead kids and soldiers everyone is 'outraged'.
Of course its disgusting - I find it disgusting - but I also find it absolutely laughable.
We've accepted an invasion of our privacy for years and years and years and nobody has really give a shit. I'd go as far to say it's been widely encouraged as it's what sells newspapers. How on earth did people think that journalists got their stories? Hacking is a step too far but we've known about if for years.
Politicians are knee deep in this.
Indecency goes in all walks of life and this indignation is pitiful.
There are far worse things going on to get 'outraged' about.
Some of them are happening now that we know little about, not things that have been in the domain for years.
PS I told the mrs about the kiddie porn and she took it quite well

Potentially.... Could the NOW hacker of Milly Dowlers phone be an accessory to murder as the mens rea was present or would it just be pervert the course as there was no direct association to the actus reus? If it was discovered that the hacker provided information to Bellfields defence, what would the position be? In respect of the defence cross questioning of Milly's dad, does the fact that a man watches porn warrant due interrogation or is interweb porn surfing normal unless it is a sexual snuff vid or summat? So many questions that are spoiling my holiday and causing arguments Not sure how the hacker could be an accessory to Milly Dowler's murder unless they knew who it was at the time and were working with them to throw the police off the scent by making it look as if she might still be alive to be deleting messages from her phone. Of course anything's possible but that takes things rather a lot further than the horrible place we're already in. I've written a little about some of the legal ramifications (one of which might be that the hacking plus the press coverage of the cross examination of Dowler's dad might make a retrial impossible). bit.ly/mPmkeyRegarding the cross examination of Dowler's dad, there's been a very good blog on this (sufficiently good that the Victim's Czar, who had been one of many to wade in when the tabloids went into outrage frenzy over the cross-examination, changed her view on the cross-examination after reading it) at bit.ly/l7Zc6Y

Botzarelli... Thank you. I have read the second blog and it has left me with more questions than answers and I need to think the blog responses through first
The link to your blog is something about Thameslink. Have the Vodafone fools in Greece been mucking about with my tinterweb?

Ah, bugger, my fault for copying the wrong shortened link - its the article before so not too hard to find anyhow.
I'm sure the lovely people at Vodafone Greece had nothing to do with it (although I have got some stuff to do with them in a bit).

Well, I hope you're all proud of yourselves. Howls of outrage result in loads of people who had nothing to do with this twattery losing their jobs. While the gingé terrible who is nominally responsible for the whole shitcake gets off scott free.
BTW, AB_ re: Vodafone - how do I go about becoming an expert witness for software/telecomms related legal cockwrestles, so that I can retire in 5 years time to a floating palace of quim and drugs?

Do you really think they will lose their jobs? Surely they will end up working on the Sunday version of the Sun, or the News of the World as it will be called by staff.

According to what I done readed in the newspapers it looks that way. They've been told there are limited opportunities within the organization and not to bother turning up on monday, which sounds a bit less than hopeful. Seeing as Rupert just had to sell MySpace for a tenner after buying it for 13 million billion pounds he probably wants to make his organisation a bit leaner anyway.

Let's hope not eh brispie because if this had been some bunch of public sector saps you'd have been on the picket lines by now.
Makes you piss yourself when people think this actually hurts Murdoch.

It is like when Guardian Media Group took an axe to the Observer to run them as a single publication but with a different brand on Sunday. There will be a lot of roles which will have been duplicated across the Sun and NOTW.
This had been planned a while - the Guardian reported the proposed change before publishing the Milly Dowler hacking story. It has been brought forward a fair bit but I wouldn't be surprised if the summer was a relatively weak period for ad revenue and sales.
Bernie - no idea although a group I am a member of in linkedin was looking for someone to provide an expert analysis of competition in some bongobongoland telecoms market and I could have recommended you if you knew anything about it.

Decent press conferences on the issue this morning from Union Boy and Cameron.
Dave did a pretty good job of saying 'this is how it is' in terms of the power groups in the country - which we all knew anyway - and showed bottled by standing by Coulson.

Why are you trying to muddy this? Is it to get a rise or because you're serious? There is only one moral dimension here, no grey areas and the decision to close the paper is cynical and by all accounts would have happened anyway on a purely commercial basis. The whole thing is profoundly depressing because it exposes so many horrible things about our country and not just wankers paying other wankers to help them profit from murdered children, dead soldiers and celeb tittle tattle. I'm glad this vile fucking rag has gone, but this just leaves a vacuum to be filled by those willing to fill it to meet the needs of the c**** who pay for this shit and the disgusting politicians who toady up to the media. Trying to equate it all to 'CCTV' or 'teachers' is just stupid, for whatever reason you have.

Both Elt
Public outrage from a country full of selfish c**** fucks me off and amuses me in equal measure.
Striking teachers et al fuck me off as they are demanding preferential treatment than many private sector workers.
If they get their way then other people will have to suffer.
They are to some degree...c****.

...and would that really surprise you?
The fact that they were hacking c**** was established some time ago wasn't it?
Still, it may have just been a thoughtful unhacked gift?
Wonder if she had any gifts from teachers?

What it exposes is the sort of person we are expected to accept as the close personal friend of the Prime Minister and head of the country's largest media organisation. So, yes. Exactly like a teacher. The phone she gave her was just like CCTV. And when she bought a cup of tea it was like a benefits scrounger.

I think we've been down this route before I couldn't give a toss who Dave is mates with as long as he runs the country well. I'd have been more disappointed in him if he had just thrown Coulson and Ginge to the side....sticking by your 'friends' is an admirable quality in my humble opinion. I'll live with the fact that he had to cosy up to Murdoch's lot to get to the top as long as he does something good when he gets there. We will see if what has come out of the last few days has been a good thing even if the OTT reaction pisses me off. To be fair though, most people that I've come across in the last few days couldn't give a fuck....it's been more of a media game than anything else. Having Hugh Grant come on the box to teach us about morals just about sums it up. Yep, the whole thing is grim but I'd rather be cynical and amused by it rather than be profoundly depressed.

That probably says more about the sort of people you come across.
It's hardly an OTT reaction when you have the Met Police involved in a bribery scandal, the closure of a national newpaper, the hacking of the phones of murdered children, the Prime Minister's judgement called into question and the discrediting of the country's largest media organisation. If people aren't reacting to that with disbelief, it's because they're not paying attention or aren't capable of it.

So you think all workers should be dealt with in exactly the same way? Wouldn't that be communism?
Sticking by your mates is fine if it's someone you drink with down the pub. Not if your PM and your 'mate' has just been arrested and accused of several crimes that are very high profile.
If Murdoch hadn't smashed the unions in the 80s they'd all be out on the picket lines. And quite right too. Now they just have to accept it and walk away. Which is a bit shit by anyones standards.

People have to move with the times brispie and be mindful of what is going on in the world. Teachers always think they are better than everyone else though so I'm not surprised they want better pensions.
That's where we might differ brispie. I think it should be exactly the same for us 'down the pub' as it is for the PM. Isn't that what most of us moan about? One rule for one, another for another? Wouldn't you wait for the outcome of the investigations before ditching your mate brispie?
I'm sure they will pick up jobs. Will be some teaching ones coming free soon.

See Elt, you're just OTT again.
Piglice bribery is nothing new.
People constantly have a pop at the PM.
Murdoch hating has gone on for years.
The hacking issue has been out for ages. Granted I'll give you the dead kids one coming out this week. I simply don't believe that people are that shocked though...not if they really thought about it. Yep, its digusting and shocking, but I don't think people can be that shocked.
You are right though, probably is more to do with the people I come across.

@botzarelli blog Twitter Updates Isn't it rather difficult to effect permanent deletion of emails on a business network? Will be backed up centrally - exceptions too obvious 1 hour ago Not if you have my patented hierarchal storage management cleansing technology JohnnyNeptune pretty amateur of NI to admit still had records and then for them to be lost - absence of records that ought to be retained is odd. And you've got stunning buggergrips 1 hour ago Now that's a better tweet.

Oh and FWIW, I think Merkin is unfortunately, probably right in his assessment of what your average man in the street thinks about all this. Even on twitter, which is a small proportion of the online community in the UK and probably self-selects a large proportion of the sorts to worry themselves with what is going on beyond their immediate vicinity the announcement of Pat Butcher's departure from East Enders has consistently been trending above anything to do with NOTW, Coulson etc.
I'm mildly tempted to blog about it just to get more visits (although this has been my best week ever, partly thanks to you mongs). My reach is approximately the same as shouting my opinions loudly in a half empty pub though.
