Great to see him doing well at Orient, excellent servant for Town and a lot better than some of the dross we've had since he left. (Andy Butler, Chris Lucketti, Neil Trotman) to name but a few.

Not quite no one! I was assured he wasn't good enough to play in a side capable of going up from L1. So orient must have just been very lucky so far.

No-one said he was "no good" but at the time we simply had players who were better than him (P. Clarke, Morrison, McCombe, Kay were all playing better at CB than Clarke).

Tranmere set off like a train last year and missed out completely. Always liked Nathan, great servant but we had better options than him and it was time to move on.

He looks to be playing a deeper sweeper type role for Orient as well as club captain. He reads the game very well from deep.

Think Morrison looked very good, a level above, whilst on loan but i don't think the others were any better than Nathan Clarke had been the last time hed been a regular in the side. Each one had strengths and weaknesses. One thing Nathan gave us which ALL the ones you mention there certainly didn't, was decent distribution from the back. I might be wrong but I'd be surprised if he wasn't quicker than any of them aswell.

Good lad - chuffed rotten for him, Captain of Div one leaders, playing well. Hope his injuries are behind him and he returns next year - he will get (and deserve) a brilliant reception.
Before Vaughan turns him inside out, of course!!

we had people on more money and they had to play...we still have...its why Wallace isn't playing...its why clayton starts even when he has been "missing" for the last few games.. smithies plays when fit, every game as there is usually someone "watching"...

On his day he was a good quality centre back. Looked a real prospect at first but petered out. Prone to the calamitous non-league standard mistake every so often. It was time to move on for him, and I'm happy to see him doing well for Orient.

I think Clarke, Gerrard and Lynch do those as well. I was genuinely surprised watching the Orient game that he seems to have improved a bit. Then I thought its only Div 1 - and then I thought again as its the top of the division and there have been some decent sides in that position in recent years.

Managers help breed confidence into players. I think Lee Clark had made it pretty clear he didn't rate Nathan, therefore every time he did play he'd have felt additional pressure to peform. Anyway, always a legend for me - Who put the ball in the Ba&&ards Net ? Nathan Clarke did!

Out of the guys you mention I would certainly agree that Morrison was a cut above Nathan but the other three?? All of them (& Gerrard & Lynch) have made some real howlers (as did Nathan on occasion) and I think he had a far superior passing range - as well as a good deal more pace than any of them.. Academic now - Lee Clark obviously didn't rate him - so he's playing his football darn sarf. Good luck to him I hope he comes here next season (in the "Championship") and he gets the reception that his service to the club deserves. UTT

He wasn't good enough and ten plus years at league one level tend to indicate that's the case. Obviously playing well in a decent orient outfit at present, and must have improved markedly since leaving us. Needed to leave though - got stale and despite partner after partner, except for a short spell with page never convinced consistently after suffering bad injuries. Top bloke and deserves his current success but not as good as what we have now IMHO.

From what little I know, the reason why the Clarke brothers never hit the heights here seemed to be down to their bodies being the equivalent of a packet of crisps. But for their frequent injuries, they'd probably still be here (could say similar about Gary Roberts following his arm break at Swindon) - Nathan had interest from Chelsea, if I recall?
They're both good, decent lads - and all the best to them at Orient and Preston.

That'll be why Lynch played all last season then- cos hes one of the biggest earners we have so he had to play??. suicide Do you think Dean Hoyle deserves somebody coming out with insulting bullshit about how he runs the club? Give you head a shake.

It's good to see him doing so well at orient, and it would be great for Orient to go up this season ..another trip to London next season and Orient is a fairly decent place to go to. As I recall when Clarke played for Town, he was prone to the rather too frequent 'disaster', and it tended to cost us..but on other occasions he was excellent.. An enigma in his own lifetime..

He made the odd error, just the same way all our other centre backs do from time to time. No more and a lot less than some.

Can't think his distribution was that good Capt, in fact he seemed to get called 'hoof' quite a lot, or was that just me? He made some great tackles as the last man on Monday night though and looked very comfortable with everything in the air. Good luck to him, he needed to move on and have a new challenge and it seems to be working out at the moment. Decent lad and always good to see lads like that do well.

Certainly wasn't just you. But his ability to pass the ball over 40 or 50 yards was VASTLY better than other centre backs we've had like P Clarke,Kay, McCombe, trotman, Butler, Gerrad Lynch. I always thought it was a bit like with his errors, that any stray pass seemed to count X10 somehow compared to others. He was just one of those players that got far more criticism than he deserved IMO. Think it's an academy thing as recently Smithies and Hunt have had the same over-exagerated response to any error.
A good number of goals came as a direct result of NC playing a good long ball out from the back ( 3 in his last 3 home games I seem to remember from a row about this back then). I bet we haven't had 3 goals that have come from a pass by our centre backs in all the time since.
Anyway, its good to see him doing well as he goes into the last few years of his career. Hope he gets to play a bit of championship football before he hangs his boots up, as had things gone differently for him with injuries thats where hed have spent the bulk of his career I reckon.

It would be great to see little old Leyton Orient make the Championship. Always an enjoyable away trip, and an easy one for me.

Villa were linked but it was Arsenal that were very interested in him when he first started in our first team.
