..25 years ago I was down at Leeds road watching Town beat Chester City, 3-1. During the game news game through of crowd trouble in the Cup Semi Final down at Hillsborough...Liverpool, again, I thought. When I got home I then watched the scenes being broadcast on TV...then the news came through of deaths...lots of them. I remembered tears coming to my eyes as i saw the devastation..in fact I cried my eyes out...I was 39 years old then.
Over the next day or so it was reported that drunken Liverpool fans without tickets had broken down the gates and stormed into the already packed Leppings Lane terraces, crushing those already in there. I was furious, ...but now I am even more furious that after 25 years we still do not have the full truth, other than it was not as reported that day.
For the Mums and Dads, brothers and sisters, Uncles and Aunts who lost loved ones that day...I can only give you my sincere sympathy and to those who's total incompetence, lies and mistruths over the ensuing years and enquiries..I say shame on you.
Respect for the 96.

Can't echo those sentiments enough. A 'cover-up' and the Sun's shameful headlines the days and weeks afterwards reporting the tragedy.
RIP

I can still see the pictures in my minds eye, as clear as the day I saw them in the newspapers on the Monday morning at work, of people dying right there on the page of the paper.
There have been a lot of tragedies which some would say Hillsborough has no right to overshadow, but it was the fact that millions saw it happening live in front of them on their televisions, and in the following days after in the papers.
RIP

I was 13 and also at Leeds Rd that day. Don't remember hearing anything about the disaster while we were watching the game, people were talking about it on the bus home to Lindley though.
I also remember going to my cricket club the day after and hearing an ex-copper who drank there (a nasty old bastard) ranting and raving about drunken scum football fans up to their usual tricks, serves them right etc etc.

I was at the game that day as well and I was 11, cant remember hearing anything about the disaster at the game, but I do remember being at in the car on the way home hearing all about it. I can still remember to this day the moment it was on the radio. I will always remember that day and what it was like.
But I couldn't remember who we had played and what the final score was, but I can remember the rest silly things like the weather and things like that.

played local football at Reinwood rec and came off to find that the match had been abandoned and my first thoughts were how could the hooligans cause trouble on FA cup semi day and cause the game to be abandoned.........over the next horrible few hours the news began to filter through that fans had suffocated and crushed to death. I too cried......i still struggle to come to terms that so many people can go to watch a football game and not go home.

I was a student at Sheff Poly, and just after 3pm I left the Nursery Tavern as a very slightly drunk teenager, with the intention of meandering up Collegiate Crescent to catch the football at Marshall Hall.
Half an hour or so later I was a lot more sober, handing out drinks to dazed walking wounded, as our Halls had become a field hospital / morgue overflow area for the hospital at the top of the road.
The rest of the day I cant really remember much about, just remember people turning up constantly during the afternoon and into the evening (presumably friends and family seperated at the game and also those driving in from back home)...and a total state of confusion and lack of real info for those there, remember these were the days before mobile phones and internet. Very surreal, and didnt really understand the reality of what had happened until seeing the newspapers the next day.

We had a new baby who wouldn't stop crying so we had a bright idea to drive round the M25 to rock her to sleep. Listened to events unfolding at Hillsborough on the radio.
Even years on its difficult to imagine how so many young people could be killed in a crowd watching a football match. I used to love being in a big crowd at Leeds Road and even feeling the pressure of the big crowd behind you on the crash barriers - but you just can't believe the consequences.

there were a number of people who disliked football and its supporters..but they saw the start of the massive money into the game and wanted in.
there were varying types of fencing available and different ways to construct and erect it, some were cheaper than others. Have a guess which way the clubs went?
they and their backers still wanted as many bodies through the turnstiles as was possible and they ignored previous semi final and big games where tragedy was averted by luck more than good management.
the whole set up for this game was wrong years before it too place.
the influential people taking the money from this new cash cow then instigated the lies and cover up at a level that made a police superintendent and a few inspectors pale into insignificance.
football supporters had been treated badly and were put into situations of danger on a regular basis because of the money that flowed into the game, we kept coming back and that was used against us. It took this to change it and the knowledge that money was a big factor in decisions made long before Hillsborough and that actual crowd safety wasn't anywhere near the top of their agenda makes it all the more tragic and ultimately disgusting.

Didn't Julian Winter score an absolute screamer? Seem to remember that but might be wrong.

I was playing football in the back garden with my grandad apparently I was only 3 so don't remember. My dad was working the town match (ex bobby) so my mum tells me the tale that she sat in the living room crying watching it on TV.
Wasn't it a day a lot like today plenty of sunshine and quite mild?

Yes I seem to remember it being quite warm for April as I was at the Town game only in a t-shirt, in fact I seem to recall us having a beltingly hot summer that year. News was filtering round that summat had happened but as said before there was no mass media covergae, no internet nor mobiles but nothing concrete only when I got home did I see the real carnage. I was only 12 at the time and didn't really grasp the severity of the disaster, just had my tea and went out round my mates house.

You're not wrong, he did, lashed it into the top right hand corner from about 25 yards, Andy May scored one of the others that day but can't remember who scored the other game. Think we were making a late charge for the play offs but in true Town style we fluffed our lines.

I was at the Chester match too as a 10 year old with my old man. He was a copper at the time, one mate of his was working at Hillsborough that day and never worked again - had a complete mental disintegration at what he saw.
Problem was after years of crowd trouble football matches were policed with an attitude of public order at the forefront, public safety secondary. Thank goodness things have changed.

It was indeed a day exactly like today, sunny and a similar temperature. I was putting up a fence in the back garden with the father-in-law and we listened to the whole sorry saga on the radio as it unfolded. We were both totally numb at the end of it. RIP all 96.

The Hillsborough disaster took place a few years before I was born, but it makes no difference. RIP to the 96, all fans should be able to watch football without the possibility of losing your life.
As a separate point: full respect to Roberto Martinez - truly his appearance at the memorial service today (to do the first reading) proves that Liverpool is a city united, transcending football rivalries - if only in this regard. His managerial abilities are to be admired, and his humility and humanity is to be hugely respected.

I was at the Town match, aged 8. It was my first full season watching. A family friend who was about 18 at the time used to take me. I remember him listening to the radio during the match and telling us what had happened. By the time we got home it had become clear that loads of people had died. What a horrible, horrible day. No matter what anybody says about who is to blame, Hillsborough was predictable and preventable. The authorities, in my view, have a responsibility to predict that large crowds of people (especially football fans) will behave irresponsibly, and to put in place conditions that prevent that predictable behaviour from causing a catastrophe. They collectively failed that day, and many innocent people had their lives taken/ruined as a result. It was heartbreaking then and it's heartbreaking now.
We might moan from time to time that new grounds, ours being no exception, just don't have the same atmosphere, the same character. It's a lot better than having to worry that your kids won't come home.

Thinking back to that miserable day and the disgusting cover up that followed will angers me, and no doubt many others, beyond anything that I am able to put into words. At the time I had totally "given up" on spectating at football (the fences and hooligan behavior of the eighties which are sometimes referred to on here as though something to be proud of, had finished my interest) and was in "golf" mode. I came into the clubhouse after a round that afternoon to a load of comments, as mentioned above, of the "Liverpool again" variety.. I have to admit though to not being surprised at what had happened mainly because of what I had seen with my own eyes, nowhere near Liverpool supporters...
Interestingly; I have a couple of mates who STILL will not accept that "Liverpool" had little to do with the disaster --- very sad. My answer is "Read the Taylor report" But; why let the truth get in the way of rubbish published in the Sun?

This irks me, the Taylor Report details exactly what happened & who is to blame but folk talk like it was never published. There will be good listen coming up on Radio 5 live at 9pm.

Pretty sure Mark Smith got the other at the Cowshed end...can remember getting on the bus to Meltham and the old guy who used to give me the full-time scores from his transistor radio (no smartphones in those days kids!) telling me people had died at Hillsborough. A terrible day.

An interesting article HEREGood article with a lot of valid points to make.. I would challenge the writer on one phrase that he uses a few times; "working class football fans." My anecdotal "fan experience" (since the 50's) is that there are fewer and fewer fans from the lower orders -- for bleedin' obvious reasons!!! For goodness sake let's get a WIN tomorrow - I'm getting the 2001 feeling and would like to loose it... UTT
