Making my racing debut on Saturday at York at the age of 27 and whilst I'm capable of understanding form guides, I have an uncanny nack of picking out donkeys...
Can anyone offer any decent tips?

OK, some advice. You are a fun bettor, treat it as such. Do NOT expect to win and place all your bets BEFORE you get to the races. On the course you will get poorer odds, queue all day (twice if you win) and will receive no bonuses. Do some Lucky 15s at BetFred and get treble odds 1 winner. One winner at 10/1 from 4 horses and you will double your money. Also do some placepots, then you may have an interest all day. Stay off 2 year old races and sprints if possible...no time to explain. Dont go in a big group, dont go in fancy dress and try to see the main elements...parade ring, main stand, view of the course. If you are milking it head for the champagne area (after buying or upgrading to a £35 members badge). Take a real champagne glass in your pocket if you dont want to be a pleb and get served in plastic. Towards the end of the day get in the champagne area, better view of the drunken fillies. Dress to impress and if you want to pull get in the Living Rooms about 7pm...the racing ladies are in there. Across the road from there is a decent Italian, Piccolinos....also full of ladies (pre-book if you are going to eat). Finally, enjoy and never go on a weekend again, race midweek, weekends are packed with drunken losers.

Living Rooms has changed to Missoula Bar & Grill, still nice and full of women, plus does bottle service if you're really going for it. I'll be there on Saturday, but doesn't look a great day for racing, so just enjoy the experience and as Otium says, the drunks.

Easy betting, less cash to carry and Best Odds Guaranteed which you most certainly don't get with course bookies.

I have been told aready that on-course odds are much worse, so I do intend on betting (mainly) on my iphone app, although will, as you say, make some place pots and maybe the odd lucky15 whilst I am there. 2 year old races/sprints means little to me. there are a few of us going, but not a huge group 5 or 6 at most. ehave already paid for tickets in the County stand so shall be suited and booted.... i like to dress up ;-) sounds like it'll be a gea day... i like a flutter, a glass of champagne or ten and the odd lady...

Take as much money as possible!! and back the course and distance winners "Loads a money". One certainty for York!! they'll be loads of drunken Geordies.

Now Oti as someone who knows his betting I am very surprised you recommend to stay away from 2 year old races, there is a very strong school of thought that 2 year olds are probably the most genuine and consistent thoroughbreds. I find that 2 year old form tends to hold up pretty well over the season, sure they can improve for their first run (and often do - especially those slowly away) but after that they tend to find a level and perform consistently to it. The rest of your advice is sound, although I can't comment on the Living Room (although it is food for thought). The advice I would give Terrierluke is look at horses with: Course form Horses who race up with the pace in their races, in my opinion horss don't come from far off the pace at the Kavesmire In races over 5f/6f if the ground has soft in the description look for horses drawn mid to high (this ground was certainly favoured at the last meeting) Look at those ridden by Ryan Moore - I reckon he rides the course better than anyone at the moment, although Graham Lee is also worth a 2nd look In the last 5 years Richard Fahey has been top trainer but I sense that David O'Meara targets meetings as much these days Overall have a great day and enjoy it....

Good advice...i used to bet in 2 year old races but they are not for a novice punter as many entries have never raced. You are now in odds, trainers, laid out, breeding, movers territory. I was thinking for a first timer a race that was open, with a view and something lasting at least a couple of minutes to get the feel (10 furlongs).

Oh, and if you get in the Champers early ask the really old birds for tips, posh types over 50 who are botoxed to the hilt. A few of the trainers glide in and show off by dispensing wisdom.

7.00 Haydock No 2 Maljaa He holds enties in top sales races and being a half brother to Hilary Needler winner Ventura Mist means that he's bred for the job. My contact has told me he's working like a very good horse in the making and will be very hard to beat.

Had a look at the York card and came up with;
1st - Best of Order (forecast with Sirius Prospect)
2nd - First Mohican
3rd - Jamaican Bolt (I reckon this is my best fancy)
4th - Itlaaq ew
Last - Amaze ew
Good luck

But that was later in the season . My tip for York is 2.50 . Even Stevens. 25-1.. Back down to the minimum trip will shoot from the front.. Happy with a bit of cut... Will it last home ? Maybe not But I'm convinced its overpriced ...you might want to go each way . Good luck

What a great day at York I had a fortnight ago.. Moaner would have been jel it was all for free... Two horses which won then particularly caught my eye... They are running this weekend but I don't think at York.. Bronze Angel and Faraaj. Ill have a look at York on Saturday ... Ps my old fav royal Alcor runs at 9pm at donny tonight... 20-1 is too big a price in this motley company .. It's already done me a favour on here when winning at 14s ... Not sure the stable are running it to win but maybe 50p ew tonight... It will definitely win more races

My tip would be to get off the course before Wet Wet Wet come on There'll be a lot of mares hot to trot when Marti has finished crooning. Could be worth getting stuck in the stalls for Taghrooda at Ascot the only bet for tomorrow.
