Unlike you smug smoggy I have actually seen Martinez play live, since I have property in Murcia. Any club who pays more than £750k for him is retarded, he is a player I guarantee in 12 months time you'll be wondering... "why". Enjoy. You're competing with little old Huddersfield, not Fulham. Get used to it!

I'm sure with slightly better average home attendance and a chairman who's probably not that bothered about complying with FFP boro could afford to pay clayts more than us.
Whether they are prepared to pay the transfer fee town want for a player out of contract in a year's time remains to be seen.
Hope he stays

I would take the swap and move on, rather have the money plus the player than keep Clayton, but I'm guessing I'm very much in the minority.

If he wants to go and doesn't share Dean Hoyle's vision - great. I wouldn't accept anything less than £2million and I don't think our canny chairman will. If Middlesborough want to spend that sort of money, let 'em. He can be replaced, players always are. One thing that seems to puzzle me, the 3 guys I know that are from Middlesborough are all Leeds fans!

Welcome borofan, Clayton imo is a very good player not excellent but very good. Personally I think he will move to you guys for the right price/deal. Whether we like it or not (And this will annoy some on here) we are a selling club. Our ethos (In general) is to buy players we can enhance and sell on for a tasty profit. Clayton fits that bill and to see Butterfield coming the other way as part of the deal plus £1m I would take it. I think boro are a bigger club than Town and will probably end up higher than us next season.

he loves it at town. dean will want the right money if he is to leave. by right money I would suggest a hell of a lot more than boro are offering. if they offer the right money for dean and the player wants to leave, then he'll leave. if not he'll stay.

If he stays and renews a contract for a 2-3 year period fair enough we have a decent player still.
If he goes we get cash and possibly another player (I see butterfield being touted as this makeweight in the deal) so not too bad...
We're holding the aces here and in the strongest position. The Boro fan is deluded however when he goes on to say 'mighty Boro' the only thing mighty about them is their waistlines, the spend quick to get into the PL? Good luck with that as I doubt you'll get close. Enjoy many more years in the decent league of the Championship!

The truth is Middlesborough fans do consider themselves to be a bigger club than ours! Probably fuelled by those years signing big money players in the Premiership. I had the dubious pleasure of being patronised by several Borough fans some years ago in McDonalds opposite the Peacock on Leeds Road. I think it was a Boxing Day match and I had my daughter with me (hence being in McDonalds). According to those fans, they were a massive club compared to ours. I couldn't let things go without reminding them of the number we've beaten them over the years and of their 8/9 thousand crowds at Ayresome Park not long before, with fans carrying a coffin round the pitch at half-time and Town beating them on the day. (Simon Webster). With respect, they did quieten down the 'billy big bullocks' stuff after that. Anyway, I've never thought of Middlesborough as being a bigger club, if anything we're about the same size. I'll admit it's worrying that they're sniffing round Clayton, I just hope he sees sense, re-signs for us and ends all this speculation.

Above huddersfield I would guess? pointless signing? lol, I guess your knowledge of football doesnt exist outside of huddersfiend town then? Dont think we will pay over the odds when we could get him for free next season Last 5 seasons have been pretty forgettable for boro tbh thats why were hopefully spending big this summer Guaranteed that you wont get him for nowt, hes been offered another contract , if he doesn't sign it he will be sold, whether that's to you or others doesn't matter, we have put a 3'75mill price tag on him but more likely will take 2mill plus. .dont kid yourself if he does come its for ambition it will be because you are paying him more....you will probably finish a little higher than us but struggle to get in the top ten, I woukd take Butterfield and a million plus for him.

I think that if he is not going to sign an extension, it is paramount that we get rid now. The chances that we will have a superb season this time and he will be begging to extend come June 1015 are not that good.

Why is this Boro fan getting so much hostility? Bit of common courtesy to the visitor wouldn't go amiss. He didn't come on giving it the Bertie Big Bollocks routine, initially, he has now cos you lot gave him a load of grief.
In all honesty, why would Clayton go to Boro, well, they probably have a far better chance of gaining promotion than we have, so, why wouldn't Clayton go to Boro? All this talk will be unsettling him and if, he isn't going to sign a new contract, lets cash in.

Lets not forget, Clayton was (allegedly) involved in a fair bit of dressing room disharmony last season (and quite a few people at the time believed we wouldn't see him play for us again), if that's the case, I can see his head not being in the right place for us if he's wanting to move and getting decent offers from other clubs.

I don't necessarily disagree with what you are saying, but why use this daft description of a 'selling club'. Does the fact we bought Wells and Lolley make us a 'buying club'?! In all seriousness, we are no more a selling club than most out there; if anything our strong foundations mean we do not have to sell, rather we just will do when we feel it's a good deal and we can fill the void.

Agree with ar on this one.. If he doesn't sign then cash in ASAP. Middlesbrough certainly wouldn't be Claytons 1st pick of championship clubs i'm sure, but if they offer enough money & the deal is right for the club he'll go.

If Boro want to reach the playoffs then they will need to improve massively on last season! They may have just paid £3m on a striker but with the clout of the likes of Fulham, Norwich, Cardiff, Wigan, Brighton, Forest & to a lesser extent Bournemouth, Wolves & Watford they'll have a their work cut out to get anywhere near promotion imo.. Nothing against boro btw, just my opinion.

My honest opinion... I believe Town will offer him a large pay rise and the captaincy to stay, if he wants the captaincy that is. Personally I can't see Boro finishing higher than 12th again next season, saw them a few times last year and they'd have been on similar points to us without Adomah (of course you could argue we'd have been lower without Vaughan or Wells...), and not overly impressed with their signings so far (despite them being better than our non-existant ones!) I too have seen Garcia play a couple of times, or Kike I believe he's known as, and honestly for £3m I'd have much rather had that Wilson lad from Coventry who Bournemouth have just signed. Plus the league this year looks arguably the toughest since we got promoted to gain promotion, with the teams who came down spending money left right and centre, and even the teams who have come up from League 1 are splashing a fair bit of cash around. The only way Boro would get him is if they make a bid of £1.5m+ and Butterfield, and offer Clayton a huge contract that he couldn't refuse in order for him to uproot his family to move further up North just so he could finish 5/6 places higher in the Championship, which may do the trick who knows, as already said most footballers go where the money is.
If the above occurs then I'd probably lose a bit of respect for Clayton as, no offence intended, the move would be what the definition 'sidewards step' was created for in my opinion. When I heard Brighton were sniffing around I could see him leaving us for them as they are a team who genuinely do usually finish around the play off positions, but for him to leave us for Boro I think that they would have to offer him a huge contract.
But of course if Clayton doesn't wish to sign then cash in for all we can get for him!
