Hindsight yet again. Lots of us thought he'd comeback and do a job and it's a puzzle as to why he suddenly looked pastit.

Why would he retire when we are paying him good money, don't get me wrong he possibly should, but he's probably on a decent wage.

I'm guessing it will be the case of the club giving him a lump sum that represents a decent slice of his remaining contract

I'll admit from the off I'm not a fan of his and couldn't understand the excitement to have him back last season but, has happened to him? I didn't expect much from him when he came back but his general fitness just seemed terrible. He plays as if he's in his 40's on 20 a day yet he only turned 31 in April I just don't understand what's happened unless he has some on going injury? Whilst it would be in the clubs best interests for him to retire I think he'd be pretty daft to goodbye to a 6 figure sum. Surely someone will take him on reputation if he can look anything resembling a professional athlete.

He looked past it a couple of years ago when he played against town and I've no idea why we brought him back to the club. He's a journeyman striker who peaked at town and Blackburn the year he moved there and has never done anything since. He's stole a career in the top 2 divisions of English football much to my amazement. Hopefully he'll retire, if not he'll move on fingers crossed.

Seems like his body has let him down big style so wouldn't be surprised, quite early but there are plenty of ex prem players struggling at league 2 level by the time they hit thirty. I heard he looked way of the pace at league one level so not sure what there is left for him really and he won't need the money he'd get in non league. Just a shame town are lumbered with his wage, not a great way to repay the club where it all started although i guess the 1.3m fee received back in 04 will make him feel better.

We had him back because Mr Hoyle wanted him, heart ruling head.

I admit he's been a very poor signing, but that is very harsh. On here there often seems to be these narrow views of players; the other day I read Gobern had only had three good games for Town, similarly last year Arfield had only had a similar number of good games... I don't understand why figures have to be exaggerated for the sake of debate on here. You're correct that Stead peaked at Town and Blackburn during that unbelievable season he had. He finished the season top scorer for us and scored the goals to keep Blackburn in the Premier League. He may well have failed to continue at such a high level, but he has spent the vast majority of his career as a solid Championship player... He had decent periods at Sheff United, Ipswich and Bristol City and I can only think of Sunderland as a resounding failure before he resigned for us last summer. A Town product playing almost all of his career in the top two divisions doesn't really constitute 'never doing anything' in my eyes. As a club we have failed to sustain ourselves at Championship level for as long as Stead has for a number of years, likewise, I can't think of any other academy products since Boothy who have enjoyed such a long career in the top two divisions. If Stead had gone from us in League Two to the Championship and had remained there for the rest of his career, would anyone suggest he hadn't done anything? It seems to me that Stead just did so well in his first season that his achievements after that are dismissed. He could have been a good signing for us, but seems he declined far more rapidly than we predicted. It is for the best that he moves on this summer.
