According to Examiner for scrapping with Barnsley fans (can't do link on phone).
Reads as a bit harsh on the younger lad who threw neither a kick not a punch but, as the judge says, should provide a stern message to planks who like to mix football and violence.

One punched someone and the other pulled the other bloke to the ground to make it easier for others to get at him.
It does seem a harsh sentence but I can't disagree with the judge's words

www.examiner.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/two-jailed-st-georges-square-7495516''The judge sentenced Jonathan Hellings, 25, of James Street, Lee Green, Mirfield, to 16 weeks in prison and imposed a football banning order for eight years. He said that Hellings had a poor record and history of football violence, and that he was in breach of a previous order imposed in 2010 which prohibited him from being within two miles of the John Smith’s Stadium on Huddersfield Town home match days'' So one of the guys has FV history - sentence appears correct

Are they going to start giving prison sentences to footballers and rugby players for throwing punches then?

Go get some beers with your mates, have a laugh and get behind the boys or stand around like a bellend in the town centre looking for a fight ... people baffle me

Seems strange that relatives were 'shocked and in tears' that they got bird for dishing out a pasting in what equates to a gang attack.

I was jumped once in Leeds train station after anight out and had seven shades kicked out of me. The guy (arrested at the scene with some brass knuckles in his pocket) ended up getting done for common assualt and was ordered to pay me £75 and do some community service.
My point is there is massive inconsistency in the way voilence/fights end up being treated by the courts, and so it's easy to see one sentence as harsh and another as lenient.
Let's just agree they're all dickheads.

''had a poor record and history of football violence, and that he was in breach of a previous order imposed in 2010''
His previous record was a factor in his sentence

its always hit and miss as to what you might get for having a fight at a game, i know town fans and fans of other clubs who have got banning orders, if they have got this then they will have done something in the past, and then to get caught doing something else, the judge is going to come down hard on you, but what you have to do is open. ive got a couple of mates who had banning orders from nuneaton town, were the 1.5miles away from the ground on match days they had to be and got sent down for trouble in nuneaton town centre 2 seasons ago www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/video-twenty-two-men-court-charged-6284910if youve been daft enough to follow sheep and want to be a "lad" and get given a chance and then go and do it again its your own fault.

Hmmmmm, He coaches junior cricket.... FFS great role model, Just the type of person you want influencing young people. I think that should read Mirfield Parish Cavaliers, rather than Mirfield Cricket Club, doubt they would be happy with that, but I may be wrong.

Ridiculous sentencing esp the young lad, getting jail time for a bit of a scuffle with a Barnsley fan who was no doubt giving as good as he got. So these 2 do time but the real scum like peados and people who randomly attack others get a slap on the wrist - disgusting!

Came out of the Head of Steam and went for train and ended up standing on steps and watching this.
There was no gang attack or any of that, it was two groups of like-minded lads who agreed to go toe to toe. One went down and the others all shouted to leave him and carried on with each other.
Police Corsa drove across St George's Square and they all left it, the Barnsley lads who'd taken a pasting were all laughing to themselves.
Whatever your views (and I have not expressed any....) to send a college student to prison when he can be clearly seen backing off on CCTV is nothing short of disgusting.
To contextualise the violence as 'football' and so to give a harsher punishment is also disgusting. Violence is violence is violence. Wonder if a beaked up wanker who stumbled out of a nightclub and did the same would get 10 weeks in prison for a mild scuffle...

Football violence is different as it is targeted. Hate crimes are hate crimes for similar reasons - although I'm in no way relating the two. At the very least it shows possible premeditation. Being 'like minded' with the a victim is equally irrelevant in the eyes of the law.

The police are too busy clearing up all the gun crime in hudds....oh wait......so a guy who was in the vicinity but threw no punch or kick gets jail? Would that happen in any town centre in England? The other guy I have no trouble accepting his punishment

In the 70s i was a 17 years old who was part of a a 500 strong Town fan base in Mirfield which use to meet up in the pub 4 hours before the match . It was normal in them days that the afternoon would start with our Saturday afternoon pre match punch up and eventually that would stop when a football match would break out . I like so many others use to spend most of friday night shining up my size 11 doc martins and making sure my green sta press trousers, Ben Sherman shirt and Harrington jacket were looking smart and at a time when Huddersfield Town fans were one of the most feared in the country and it seemed at the time that all we were doing were releasing abit of innocent stress and frustration after a hard weeks work. How times have changed for the better as nice to able to go to most away matches which seem to have a more friendly atmosphere thus a million miles away from 70s football and we must never go back to those grim days.

What happened in that season in division 1 in 70s? Did you all go toe to toe with the big firms?

Think you should get sent to prison for biting, or atleased have to wear a fucking muzzle for the rest of your life! Seriously though, football hooliganism is so 1970's.. They deserve a sentence for their fashion sense alone!

Town were competing in the top flight against the likes of Man Utd , Liverpool ,Chealsea and L--ds and believe me, town fans were well feared and a notorious group of supporters from all walkes of life. The 70s toe to toe mass brawl with L--ds on Leeds road sticks out in my mind as this was a pre match friendy that got totally out of hand and resulted in over 300 fans being arrested .

Fuck me just imagine the punishment for .......... on a hot sunny day in Albufeira being so drunk you cant control your bowels, then scrapping with someone 30 years younger than yourself, having a kick about on the pitch at half time then throwing ale and squaring up to the manager, thank fuck we don't see behaviour like that these days at Town!
