The fact we have first refusal is surely good news nick. It means we have already discussed the options, that the players themselves may be part of prem squads and that most importantly they have the requisite quality to go straight into our team! There aren't bucket loads of players to choose from .....not easy as a lot poo poo the likes of Andrews who then promptly signs for a genuine promotion contender at the same level, having played in a play off team last campaign!!!! I may have got it hopelessly wrong, but would suggest 2 or 3 genuine quality first teasers will have a huge impact on us as a team........it better had do because robins won't get long, and nor should he after the second half of last season. Think this week will be very interesting.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves, the article doesn't say that at all. All it implies is that once the Premier League squads are announced, they'll give Town a call to see if we can do business. This is where the never actually made "promise" of 3 quality experienced Championship players signings started, we don't want folk getting worked up when we don't sign any players not able to get into their clubs Premier League squad.

Benik Afobe turned out for Arsenal a couple of weeks ago in a friendly. He would take a lot of weight off Wells and I think they would be a decent combination - they would certainly stretch defences. Realistically he is the type of "Premiership player" we will be looking at?

Sounds promising but I'm not convinced another club would say 'you've got first refusal' on a player if the move was not right for the player or the selling/loaning club.

I can't see many clubs letting fringe players go until they either
A) Buy a player in that position
Or
B) know that the other players in that position are fit for the season. Loan a fringe player and then the 2 players infront if them get a serious injury leaves you short.
It seems reasonably well known that we are in for Keane. I can see that one coming off, considering man utd are desperate to bring in 2 or more central defenders.

On another note, what a load of hog-wash the examiner article is. First refusal my backside. Why state that they have to be better than we have (obviously) and then claim we are interested and have first refusal? A contradiction in terms. “We have mentioned certain individuals and certain players and we’ve been promised first refusal on them should things work out that way. “But first and foremost they have to be better than the lads we already have here to take the club forward and we won’t be getting players in simply for numbers.

Think we'll utilise the loan market much more this season. Only remember Jazz Richards as our solitary loan last season?

Propaganda at its finest.
We've first refusal on no one, it doesn't work like that. It's the money that talks.

Bet the current players we have will be highly motivated when the coaching staff are hanging on ifs, buts and maybes from other clubs to bring in players that they have been stated in the press as better than them before they've even signed them. More great man management from Robins and his crew, smacks of a desperate bid to pacify the fans to me.

Premier league rules only allow clubs to name a certain number of players aged 21 and over in their squad. The rest may be employed by the club, but (if I understand correctly) cannot be utilised by them. If (e.g.) Michael Keane isn't on the squad list, then it's a good deal all round for him to go out on loan - irrespective of what injuries Man Utd get over the course of the season.

Don't forget also that they can submit a different set of players (in fact, they probably HAVE to, given the rules on the squad lists are different) for the Europa League too, and someone like Keane might be useful to add to the seperate local or even club-grown quota (assuming he meets either of those, I've no idea?), rather than leaving an empty space in the squad.

I'm a negative bugger at times but how some people pluck negatives from a fully positive article is a mystery

He'd certainly meet the "home-grown" criteria: www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/features/home-grown-quota-for-premier-league.htmlI must admit, I hadn't thought of Europa League rules though.

Or of course, Man Utd, if Ukrainian or Russian teams get suspended from competing, Spain and England as the countries with the highest coefficient ranking associations would be first in line for any spaces that are made available.
