My favourite ever Town player, the lad was a genius (on the pitch anyway!), he played as if he didn't even have to think about it. Scored some cracking goals for us, one against I think it was Palace in the 4-0 win where a throw in got taken to him and he just spun and volleyed it in one motion and one against Ipswich at home when he showed unbelievable composure in the 6 yard box stand out for me as summing him up. The best I've seen one on one with the keeper as well. We were in a bit of a slump when he left but towards the end of the season until the last 2 games we'd only lost 1 in the previous 9 so if he'd stuck around who knows...
Always thought Martin Smith was quite underrated by a lot of fans because of the circumstance he arrived but he was class as well just very unlucky with injuries. The 2002/03 season he was brilliant, the term "one man team" was an understatement that year.

To be fair, our season started to unravel after a home defeat to Charlton just after xmas. Key players such as Kenny Irons, Chris Beech, Ben Thornley, Jamie Vincent and EVERY centre half on the books got injured. I remember Bruce saying that he was contemplating playing himself because it was that bad on the injury front. Oddly hardly any of the players who'd looked so good against Liverpool in the cup a few weeks earlier ever recovered. Even had we have kept Stewart I don't think we'd have gone up that season, him leaving was just the icing on the cake of a season that started to fall apart just after xmas. Certainly, the bad run of form started before Stewy left - but every side has a blip. There were only about 3 weeks between the Charlton match & Stewart leaving. Injuries or not, I'm pretty sure that we'd have got back on form pretty quickly had we not sold Stewy (particularly in the manner that we did). I remember the bullsh*t we were being fed as well in the aftermath of selling Stewart. That we were going to sign Daniel Fonseca & Tijani Babangida (about as believable as Superlopez' f'ing news networks!) as some kind of sweetener. Taking the piss only made things worse. The biggest problem was not the injuries, it was that the heart & belief evaporated (on and off the pitch) on the day our own chairman screwed up our promotion campaign before it had even had one chance to succeed.

Maybe. But you look at that side that played at Fulham and it was decimated. Vincent playing with his ribs stitched together, no Monkou.. Thomas Heary having to play. I think we'd have taken a pummeling had we reached the playoffs, Stewart or not. 2 wins in our last 7 was a bit gash... Smith oddly started quite well with 4 in 4. The rest of the side just fell apart... The Fulham result was not at all unexpected but the penultimate one at home to Stockport was the game that we threw it away. I'm sure with Stewart in our side we would have definitely made the playoffs and then would have had a better chance in them against the likes of a weaker Ipswich but as we know in the playoffs, it is such a lottery who knows what might have happened with or without Stewart. I think Stewart is used as a convenient excuse re the playoffs tbh. There were several players who were excellent early season but were dreadful after xmas, personally I don't think 1 man would have made the difference, albeit 1 very good man. But we'll never know now...

Completely disagree mate. Pretty much every career nosedived after xmas and never recovered... Monkou and Lucketti who were solid were both injured, Vincent played with injury for the last few months... Irons' groins went completely to the point that he could barely move out of the centre circle, Beech and Thornley also got injuries. Wijnhard went way off the boil after xmas, he had 14 goals in 32 before xmas, and then 2 goals in 20... The belief probably went as well as you say, but there were gaping holes in performances before Stewart went that weren't there pre xmas where we were excellent.
