Obviously could never happen, but whilst watching the sport on TV tonight, I got to thinking...
With the growing disenchantment of the FIFA World Cup by the English because of feelings of corruption and malcontent at those running the game at the top table (plus the other home nations who are unlikely to ever qualify for a finals ever again), combined with our overall relative rubbishness a country competing on the World stage, along with morale question marks as to whether we should even be trying to qualify for a competition to be held in a Russia that looks like it needs sporting and business sanctions to bring Putin back towards what would be considered acceptable behaviours for a developed nation, and then the vagaries, confusion, health risk and timetabling issues of the Qatar WC to follow, I wonder....
...what would a Commonwealth Nations Football Cup competition look like?
Could it theoretically work? Is there enough quality in 32 (or probably 16) qualifying teams to have a finals that would be worthy of that title? What would the qualification look like in terms of the distribution of countries around the world.
Would England win pretty much every time? Would such a tournament provide a bit of a feel good boost to the English game (as well as giving the lesser nations such as Wales and India the chance of some serious competitive football) such that our game might improve so that we do become a true top 16 / top 8 team on the actual World stage again, as has been our traditional place at that level prior to the last 12/16/20 years where weve dropped to being a top 32 team.
I'd like to watch this. Thoughts?

We wouldn't get out of our group and it'd be highly embarrassing. It's a no from me

Putin might point out that the 'revolution' in the Ukraine was definitely sponsored and financed by the west. Are we fit and proper to host International tournaments..??
my view is we play big tournaments anywhere they can run it but only after they have been awarded it fairly. What they do in their own countries is their business and should be dealt with by political intervention and not by other governments doing little or nothing apart from trying to use sport as their 'ultimate or really only weapon'... We are at present making a lot of noise about the Ukraine and the middle east but actually doing nothing. We might eventually not play competitive sport with half the nations on earth because we don't like what they do but we wont stop doing business with them, period.

Actually, prob 12 would be ideal looking at the countries...imagine four groups of 3 with top two of each going to a knockout quarter final.
England Cameroon Jamaica
Scotland Sierra Leone Uganda
Nigeria Australia Wales
Ghana Northern Ireland South Africa

I can see Nigeria/Australia and Ghana giving us some serious competition. we would also have to score more than gareth bale, which looks unlikely at the moment.

I agree WHAT THEY DO IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES. But the fact is that Russia is effectively annexing the Ukraine by a (not very quiet) form of stealth. If "pro France" folk forcibly took control over Suffolk, backed directly by arms and personnel from Paris, they wouldn't be called rebels or separatists, they'd be considered invaders, and we as a country would be fighting back to defend our land with military might and with immediate and complete trade sanctions against France with the backing of the rest of the free West.

the 'folk' in Suffolk are not to all intents and purposes French..
the folk involved may live in the Ukraine but are to all intents and purposes Russians.
a great many folk in the ex soviet satellites are very pro Russian, still.
Putin is a great many things but strong leader seems to be the 'asset' that most appeals to all the 'ex Russians' who no longer live in Russia.
btw, when we stop doing naughty things in countries where we have no right to be the 'free West' tag might start carrying some moral weight.

Spot on. The fact that some could fall for the controlled media coverage of the Ukraine debacle beggars belief. What about Britain in Northern Ireland, the Falklands, and Gibraltar, to name but a few. All of these situations are complex. Russia has arguably a much stronger right -- based on culture and history -- to control over most of the Ukraine. Russians have been free to travel to the UK, BTW, for many years now, whereas the UK, like many European countries, was not keen to give free passage to Ukrainians! Why was that? The emerging EU dictatorship, backed by American interests, clearly has designs on Ukrainian resources right now. Simples. Personally I would rather trust Russia Today coverage over the likes of the BBC and Sky, etc.

I would agree with Northern Ireland, the British moved many Protestants to there from the 17th century onwards, but not sure why you mention The Falklands or Gibraltar. There never were any Argentinians living on the former, and Gibraltar was ceded to Britain in a treaty, and I admit I have no idea whether any locals were moved at the time. I would guess rather unlikely as it's a rock after all. Does Russia moving people into the Ukraine, Crimea, Baltic States etc etc over centuries make it right or Russian though? Not in my eyes. Smacks of Nazi Germany.....Ooooh, there are a lot of Germans in Sudetenland in Czech republic, we'll claim that and so on. I can easily see why Russians living in such places think as they do, but sorry they're living in a foreign Country. Where as in Northern Ireland it had become very complicated, in the Baltic, they still have a tiny bit between the other states, but like Northern Ireland it isn't even connected to the rest of Russia. Of course after years of oppression these places never help themselves, Russians in the Baltic states do not have the same rights as native Estonians, Latvians etc. One day, once again, it will no doubt end in tears. Tit for tat just brings endless grudges on both sides that are basically incurable. Look at Israel and Palestine / Gazza and so on.

Thankfully none of these nations would be involved in the Commonwealth Nations Football Cup, so we don't have to worry about them, and can instead look forward to facing South Africa in a quarter final, a tough semi against Australia and a showpiece final against Nigeria.

Yes, as I said, these situations are complex, but to insinuate that Britain somehow has more right in a number of such places is subjective. As regards Israel, Britain gave Palestine to them. I love the BBC terminology of late. It's basically 'Terrorists' versus 'Israeli Defence Forces'.

I do agree londontown, with the complexity of everything, but to be honest find it all a mess and despair in reality about just what people will kill for. And yes I do agree we have been no different throughout history, but in the rather distorted way of all such peoples I do tend to think we did things better, just as Russians and Ukrainians think they're the bees knees too. The only way to get over such things is basically to forget them, and I don't mean that in a bad way. Look how quickly we have all got over the Germans and the 2nd world war atrocities. Yes they may be mentioned on TV programmes, but as our allies we currently forget all such horrors for the benefit of all. It's remembering past slights, real or imagined, let alone atrocities that is causing all the problems, along with hard line beliefs in some cases, whether that's religion or ideologies. It seems that the one Country sometimes that is forever apologising for past errors is the UK, which in my eyes is ludicrous, as we also gave so much to these places we called empire, let alone abolishing slavery and Piracy. If half these countries really hated us there would be no Commonwealth, they just like to get something over us in many cases. I always used to think that the only solution, was to find a group of like minded people and bugger off to the first inhabitable planet we find, but in reality as I said despair of humans in most respects. Even on here, we can't agree for five minutes, and some folks don't just disagree but get extremely verbal. And if you took a group of same thinking folks, with no religion or fundamentalist beliefs, how long would it be before someone in the next generation came up with something radical and gained supporters. It would go pear shaped within a couple of generations and you'd suddenly find there were two "countries" on our new planet. It's I guess what it means to be human, don't personally like it, but we have to live with it and lump it. Most of us can do so, without resorting to guns or knives, but lets be honest some folk get right on our wick. lol

Bradford council flying the Palestinian flag and then claiming they were not taking sides is the single most stupid and totally unbelievable thing I have ever heard in the 'free West'...
another case of if we believe its right then we can do anything we like to support it, but you cant because your views are different.
bigots/racists and complete fucking idiots, they interviewed one councillor who didn't have any answers and I wouldn't trust to find his own arse with both hands with the light on and someone helping him.
not sure a member of the EDF would be allowed to just keep replying "we are not taking sides" time after time???

I'd love to see a world cup competition whereby all the players & managers & officials are off their tits on social drugs - Ron Atkinson as co-pundit & the commentator also being under the influence.
Channel 5 to get the tv rights

Blinding idea The Commonwealth Games are always in World Cup years though, so no one would prioritise it, unless you make it a youth competition, as in the Olympics.
