I think there may possibly be a misunderstanding of Duanes supposed attitude problem.
I heard that when asked about getting into the first team that said something along the lines of that he couldn't believe he was playing with the likes of John Stead, almost as he was in awe of the situation. Maybe he needs to adjust to being in the limelight. Or maybe he thinks john Stead is crap and can't believe he's ended up playing with the likes of John Stead.

Far too soon to be writing the lad off. He needs confidence and the strength to hold defenders off and offer something defensively. Hopefully it will come with time and we need to be patient.

Joe Skarz is cutting it at this level now, if he can do it, I'm sure Duane can given time and encouragement.

Talking to an ex-town player the other day and he was saying that when moving from development to senior level he was surprised at the physicality of the game at the higher level and how people actually tried to hurt you! Perhaps Duane's also finding that?
Like most of the under 21's he probably needs to bulk up a bit to deal with it.

Can't really see him bulking up much. His physique is what it is. Look at the size of Messi. He doesn't need to be built like the hulk, just needs to build up his core strength so that he doesn't get knocked off the ball and so he can help out defensively.

Skarz is a great example of why you shouldn't write young players off too soon and also how their progress as a player can be effected by the type of support they get from the stands. Some of the treatment he got from sections of our 'support' was shocking IMO and Im glad hes gone on to prove them wrong.

I don't think any of us are decrying his abilities or skill, I DO think we all would have expected to have seen some development over the last 12 - 15 months, which just has not happened.
sure, it's too early to write him off, but there are surely enough signs that he may not make it?

Certainly too soon to be writing Holmes off - but he does appear to have gone backwards & it is a concern that somebody who was considered such a bright prospect not that long ago is struggling in Lg2.

Town fans love to over rate an academy product. Take his pace away and he is nowhere near good enough for senior football.

Remember... the more CERTAIN you are about something, the more likely it is that sooner rather than later you will have to do one of your infamous 180 degree turns

Not at Town it seems. Bunn & Smith at 21 are our youngest. Only Holmes at 18/19 has come close to playing regularly for us in recent years. That's my point re our young players.........the championship is littered with young lads 21 or under......byram, mowat, Hughes, Redmond, Gibson, Wilson, lascelles, just off the top of my head! If our players aren't in or on the verge of the squad by the then I fear for them.......can't see the likes of Sinnott, crooks, being involved going fwd and they are now 21+ aren't they? I agree about Sinnott & Crookes but given the fact that we romped to both the U18 & U21 titles last season, shouldn't we be giving some of these lads a chance? The likes of Billing, Lolley, Charles and maybe one or two more must be given some game time this season. We have to take a chance on these lads. The better the standard that they play at the better they'll become. Holmes being at Bury will do sod all for his development just as it did sod all for Sinnott who spent time on loan there last season.

He's 20 year old next month. He needs to develop soon. Defensively, he's a liability. Offensively, he's poor when he has no space to run into. He needs to add something more to his game. I kind of feel sorry for him as Holmes will never live up to the hype that so many Town fans have added to on here.

"dont delude yourselves over him anymore" what an embarrasing thing to say about a 19 year old lad from a club that are trying to make the academy their lifeblood

I know this example has been used a lot recently but Harry Bunn is 21 almost 22 he has developed so much in his time here some were saying he wouldn't make it after youth level now every town fan is begging for him to get a new contract and is one of the first names on the team sheet for most.
Anyway the point is Duane is still 19 some players don't improve massively every season.
Bebe the Man United failure was called a failure by everyone, last season he was one of the top goal scorers in the Portuguese league. Anyway point of this until 23 nobody expected him to go anywhere with his career but at 24 went on loan was one of the highest goal scorers and signed for Benfica. Give Duane until he is about 23/24.

Players develop physically at very different rates. You've got kids like Rooney who was as strong as an ox when he was 16/17. Basically a man already. Then theres the likes of Holmes. 20 but still a boy. You have to give them a chance to succeed at least and to do that fairly, you have to give them time to grow. Writing lads off when they have a couple of years of physical growth to go is very premature IMO. Problem Holmes has , is there's no guarentee he will grow. And until he does he isn't going to be able to develop all the parts of his game that need developing. Id recall him from Bury. Loan him back out to a club who'll hopefully play him, and then at the end of the season assess him again- has he developed physically in the past 2 years? If theres no sign he has ( or is going to in the future ) then you might aswell let him go, because he'll never make it as a pro, never mind as a championship player.
