Been saying this for a while. Why does he insist in aiming as close to the side line as possible when taking a ground kick when he has the whole pitch to aim for

Fuck me, you are criticising a guy who earned us a point. Much more important factors to dwell on than our MoM's distribution.

I don't mind it to try it once but when the ball has not been won once by stead on the byline or it has gone out of play. Most keepers would have learnt after the 2nd failure not to try it again.

It's clear the gameplan was to go long to Stead. The ball was there to be won, it's not Smithies fault Stead is outmuscled so easily.

Is this for real?
Smithies earned us a point and his kicking is to blame - what about the save from the corner, the save from 30 yards were no one closed down the player or were he stood up McManaman one on one on the near post
Honestly him, Scannell and Lynch were the only players who played well ... the rest were 5 out of 10s or lower
Another borefest tonight with only one team trying win and it wasn't Town - i won't need much rocking to get to sleep tonight after that!

Smithies was outstanding tonight. 1 truly world class save and a couple of other great point-earning moments. But he put a couple of kicks a yard over the touchline, so lets have a go at him for that.
If the managers tactic is to put stead as far out wide as possible to get away from the centre backs and the keeper is instructed to put the ball on his head, then with the best will in the world, some of them are going to be overhit and go out of play!

But why are we playing a long ball game to a man who we all know isn't a target man, using a team full of players not suited in any way to that style of play? Smithies is probably playing to instruction, as is Robinson chucking pointless high throws down the line and the rest of the team whacking it long at every opportunity, but it doesn't make it right. It makes it downright baffling.

if we had a striker who could hold up the ball we'd be decent.
As it is we're dire.
Smithies cannot be blamed for the 10 outfield players being dire surely?

Even if Smithies had landed every kick right on the penalty spot it wouldn't have made any difference. The two Wigan CBs must have been well over 6" and 15 stone each. Playing a long ball up with those two in position was never going to work.

Not wanting to add to the 'get smithies out' campaign.
But, until we give another keeper a try, we wont know how good or bad smithies is.
The last time we had a different keeper for a decent run of games it contributed towards a large proportion of the 'unbeaten run'.
Drop him for a couple of games and see what happens. We cannot do any worse !

It's funny how clark, grayson, lillis, robins and powell have all had smithies as number 1 when he's so useless.

Some people really are absolutely pathetic. The only thing you can critisize Smithies from last night is the (usual) age it takes him to kick the ball, but seeing as the whole side had decided a point was a good night's work from about the 40th minute, I'm not sure why you'd single him out. He has to kick the ball towards the touchline to try and get one of our strikers (or Ward) against somebody smaller than a centre-half. It's been a tactic we've used for eons seeing as we have no physical presence down the middle and kicking it down the middle would result in it coming straight back (it came back anyway, but that's another issue altogether)- that's why Robins' idea to play out from the back was the sensible call, but unfortunately he never really had the personel to make it work and it was far too laboured. Smithies produced two great saves last night and one absolute worldie from that header. His handling was perfect too - not sure what some people want him to do. Bloke on from me screamed 'SMITHIES' in that long-drawn out type of exasperation when Wigan launched a free-kick which only just made it into our box - he was seriously expecting Smithies to run fifteen yards, through twelve bodies to collect a ball (in reality get nowhere near) that the first defender cleared with ease. Sums up some people's attitudes towards Smithies. Happens to all those that come through the youth set-up. Hunt had it and he's possibly the best youth product we've produced in a long time. Far more concerning should be how some of our players (Stead and Wells in particular) look like League 2 (and that's being kind to them) players with the ball at their feet in the opposition half and the fact that there is a gap of about 60 yards between the back 6 and front 2, with only Butterfield and Ward/Scannell offering any sort of attempt to close that gap. All things considered, I'd say Smithies is the least of our worries.

smithies was kicking the ball at one target some 50 yards away..
firstly he is not david beckham or glen hoddle, he is a goalkeeper..
secondly , it was an exercise in futility anyway as stead is not a targetman and for powell to allow it to keep being our only tactic to get over the halfway line was truly amazing in its stupidity.
finally, he played as many balls forward that went near to stead or wells as the rest of the team put together.
the time wasting at the end where he only moved his arse when the crowd 'urged' him to was very, very desperate and very worrying in respect of the attitude of the team at this time. The manager clearly believing we cant win a home game against opposition that are not in good form is one thing, the players going along with that is something totally different.

One excellent save One straight at him couldn't do anything about it One he turned his back on the striker with the ball and his defence sorted it out

You mean- one he stopped a certain goal when their guy was clean through by stopping him getting in a shot until his defenders finally helped him out.
