United is slightly younger than Town having been formed in 1919. Town first played Leeds United in 1924/25 in the middle of Town’s golden era. In the early days Town was well on top going undefeated in the first 16 games. The first game came on 27th September 1924 at Elland Road. The game ended 1-1 with Billy Smith scoring for Town; the game drew 41,800. The return match, on 31st January 1925 ended up 2-0 to Town with Billy Smith and George Brown finding the net. Town has achieved 4 doubles, 1925/26 3-1 and 4-0; 1928/29 6-1 and 2-1; 1929/30 1-0 in both games and finally 1930/31 3-0 and 2-1. The 6-1 home win has been by far Town’s best win, on that day, 15th September 1928, 39,869 folk saw Brown(2), Stephenson, Billy Smith, Goodall(pen) and Jackson tally for Town. Since those halcyon days United has fared much better. Leeds has achieved 2 doubles, in 1937/38 3-0 at Leeds Road and 2-1 at Elland Road and again the following season 1-0 and 2-1 respectively. An interesting bit of trivia is that the two sides have met in the League exactly 26 times before WW2 and 26 times since; the post war record is even at 9 wins each and 8 draws. The last time we met in serious competition was in the relegation season of 1987/88 when Town failed to score; it was 0-0 at home and 0-3 away. In the FA Cup we have met 3 times:- 1928/29 Round 4 at home 3-0 1930/31 Round 3 at Leeds 0-2 1938/39 Round 4 at Leeds 4-2 In the League Cup United has a very clear edge: 1961/62 Round 2 at Leeds 2-3 1964/65 Round 2 at Leeds 2-3 1974/75 Round 2 at home 1-1 Replay 1 at Leeds 1-1 aet Replay 2 at Leeds 1-2 1982/32 Round 3 at Leeds 1-0 - Town’s only LC success! 2004/05 Round 1 at Leeds 0-1 After a break of 20 years Town renewed hostilities against Leeds United and in the away fixture in 2007/08 Booth missed an early opportunity, Town played well in the first half and went behind against the run of play only to fall apart in the second half and was soundly thrashed 0-4. Unfortunately my forecast was spot on. Very fortunately I got the forecast all wrong for the home game, I said 1-3 but the lads played out of their skins and a Holdsworth goal settled it 1-0 for Town. In 2008/09 the Terriers visited Elland Road having fired manager Stan Ternent and his crew two weeks previously. United were on a 10 game home unbeaten run (all competitions) and Town had not won 2 successive games all season and had not won at Leeds in 25 years. Slack defending led to a United goal after only 4 minutes and a repeat of the previous season looked odds on. Then it all happened in the second half; Skarz equalized after 27 seconds without Leeds touching the ball! The best was yet to be; in the last minute of injury time Cadamarteri set up Collins to net the winner to give caretaker Murphy his second win against the arrogant gets and send about 2000 Town fans homes very, very happy. The return fixture drew a crowd of 20928, slightly below the average for home games, but it was a typical derby thriller. Once again it was the academy lads who came to the fore. Nathan Clarke scored after 17 minutes and Smithies made several super saves to earn Town their first “double” since 1930/31; Town now lead 5-2 in “doubles”. The next season Town went to Elland Road when Leeds was undefeated 7-2-0 21-6 and Town was lousy away 2-1-6 10-15. Smithies made a rare error and gave Snodgrass a goal in 2 minutes; last time he took 4 minutes to score. Just after the break Novak levelled matters only for sub Gradel to pounce on poor defensive play to restore Leeds’ lead. Yet again, though, Town scored late on through Rhodes to set up a tense ending but neither side could find a winner. The home fixture ended up with the same score. Pilkington scored after 18 minutes then Rhodes missed a sitter near half time. This cost Town dear as United took a 2-1 lead by about the hour mark and it was up to Roberts to save a point. The sides met in Division 2 on 1st December 2012 and Leeds was just too good for Town. Atkinson put Town ahead on 12 minutes but then Smithies had a moment of madness and gifted an equaliser. Becchio then put United ahead only for Clayton to level up with a penalty. Second half Leeds was in total control and ran out easy 4-2 winners. The return match on 16th March saw Town, with 3 wins in 9, play a Leeds side unbeaten in 6 but with only 1 win in the last 5. Goalless at half time the game burst into life in the second half with Danns giving Town the lead. Then Hunt fell asleep and United equalised but Town kept going and won a thrilling encounter with an 86th minute goal by Vaughan. The next season things returned to normal and Town beat Leeds at the MacGalphSmith’s Stadium 3-2 in a pulsating encounter which started badly with Town conceding in 80 seconds. Leeds battered Town for a while then Ward scored a great goal only 8 minutes later. After half time Leeds kindly scored for Town but equalised only 10 minutes later. Then Jon Stead scored his first goal since his return to the club and a nerve jangling finish saw Town hold on to win 3-2. On 1st February in the return match Town threw away so many golden opportunities even though Ward actually put Town ahead. Not defending a corner saw Leeds equalise on half time and in the second half Leeds absolutely thrashed the Terriers as the visitors could not defend anything with a final score of 5-1. Relegation form for sure. After a shaky start Leeds Excited seems to be gathering steam. A home win against Bolton (1-0) was followed up by an away draw 1-1 at Birmingham and a 3-1 win at AFCB. While Town has seemingly tightened up at the back the continuing lack of punch up front does not bode well for Saturday. Since Town seems to have reverted to hoofball I cannot see anything but another loss looming on the horizon, 2-0 to Leeds.
