I cant get my head around why a professional footballer at 33 is "Over the hill". These guys are fitter now than they have ever been and i cant see why a player cant have a successful career even lasting 90 minutes up to the age of his late thirties. If they look after themselves why not?

Hi Terriers Just signed up to say Grant Holt wont let you down, the man is a legend here in Norwich. What he lacks in pace he makes up for in commitment and attitude and getting in the faces of the opposition. Not sure why it didn't work out for him at Wigan but if the fans get behind him he will give it everything he has. Good luck for the rest of the season and hope you are all soon singing his song. Song? ....... Song? He impressed for a full 30 minutes without anyone moaning. We've already recorded an LP!

Does anyone know how long he's out for this time? Or more to the point when he returns to (Full) fitness and i use that term loosely how many games before he gets crocked again.
On too much money ? Out for too long. Will be back get injured and be on leave again. It is sad but a risky signing which has turned out poorly for us and him. I do feel that if he gets injured once more and is potentially out for another long spell then maybe it might be time to pay up his contract? Sad .

Anyone have a rough idea what Vaughan is on per week? Does anyone know how long he's out for this time? Probably nobody knows, his recovery time seems to be part the problem as well as getting injured in the first place. Would be superb to have Holt with Vaughan as an option or even both in the same team. Would love to see a fit Vaughan in the team with Holt able to take care of the physical work, could help him avoid further injuries also. Don't think many defenders would relish facing those two:D Sent from my GT-I9505 using proboards

We pay him for the remaining time and don't have him the squad? Not sure I see the logic, the club bought him and should stick with him, there's still a chance he may stay injury free, there must a way to manage his fitness even if it's trying to get him to change his game. I.e. don't jump for headers two yards over your head for a start :-) having him play along side a physical striker instead as a target man might a good start. He's much more than a target man anyway and wasted doing the donkey work. Sent from my GT-I9505 using proboards

I agree with much of what you say but ultimately he also could turn out to be one of the most expensive luxuries DH has forked out for. Wish him back to full fitness but honestly cannot see it. One more lengthy layoff would be one to far for me.

Fair play I slagged him off yesterday, without giving him a chance! Looks like he could end up being a good signing for us on yesterday's performance!

Someone's said £15-20k a week for Vaughan on here before, but I'm not sure how true that is. And that he's our highest earner.

Nahki Wells has been crying out for this type of player next to him. Grant Holt is an irritation to most defenders, he gets in their faces, moves them about and forces them into errors, which hopefully will create space for Nahki to exploit. If we can keep him keen and 'needing to prove a point' he could be just the answer we've been seeking in Vaughan's absence. Helped yesterday by our full/wing backs coming further forward than they did in the first half, we looked very promising in the second and played some lovely football at times. All bodes well and with two hard away games coming up, a player of Grant Holt's type is just what the doctor ordered.

209. Days. Since a town side won at home, he helped a bit. you are absolutely right , he did help . He is just the sort of striker Town have been crying out for . I hope Holt starts with Wells for the next match . I just think Powell is gradually having to assess Towns strengths and Weaknesses I really do not care about Holts age he put himself around quite well and unsettled the Millwall defence as soon as he came on .

He is the kind of striker that attracts defenders to him, which will inevitably leave gaps for Wells to exploit.. We've been crying out for this type of striker since Wells signed & is a massive plus point for us & gives Wells the freedom to express himself & play his natural game without being isolated all the time.. Just what we needed.

Provided Holt performs for us over the loan period we should be striving to sign him on permanently and have the choice of Vaughan, Holt, Wells and then one other from the rest of the bunch. If he doesn't we should have other ideas to replace him but one thing is still for sure, we will always need a replacement for Vaughan if we want to stay in this league

After Holt came on we looked as if we had twelve players on the pitch.

The bit on main stand side when he was battling like hell and even though they were pulling him he fought like hell summed him up.

Said yesterday (tongue in cheek) that Holt was a poor man's Alan Lee - he come on, puts himself about and truly makes a difference - the main difference being that, unlike Alan Lee (who I rated for his cameo roles) Holt played with intelligence - he was clearly offering advice to Wells and, instead of launching into reckless challenges, he used his physical ability to make life difficult for Millwall. He is not going to have a long career at Town, but if he can play like that for a season or even two he will become a legend here.
Early days of course, but he looks like the answer to our prayers at the moment! Plus, it needn't mean the excellent Harry Bunn dropping down the order either!

One more lengthy layoff would be one to far for me. But what you are suggesting means giving him the same amount of money upfront and him definitely not playing a further game. What is the logic in that? ?

I'd suggest that by "paying Vaughan's contract off" we'd settle with him and pay him x% of the total monies owed in respect of the remaining weeks of his contract.
Could work out well for both sides if:
a) We don't think we'll get another meaningful contribution for him (or at least, not one worth the difference between the settlement and the total amount owed) b) He believes he can get back to fitness and win himself a new contract elsewhere in the next few months

This. Was expecting a fat lump. Far from it. Me too,was expecting Jon Parkin pt.2. Wasn't expecting much from him based on the number of appearances for Wigan(& wherever it was they sent him on loan to before). When he came on though he was everything we've been crying out for ages for-lifted the team and crowd with his hold up play and there was some very nice link up play with Wells & Bunn and it gave time for the midfield and defence to push up and support. But then, when we signed Jon Parkin, the tone on this board was ecstatic. We're all football fans and prone to over-reacting I guess....

The other side of the financial coin on signing Holt is that if he gets us back to regular winning ways it soon puts a couple of thousand back on the gate and more than pays for itself.
What I've always liked about Holt is that he is clever in the Jepson sort of way - he can put players through - far more than a battering ram.

Having Holt and Wells, with Vaughn a possibility, makes Stead a useful squad player, shows that some very well targeted signings can change a teams outlook. This done while changing/bedding in a new manager, is quite something. Hope we can keep Holt for a while.

centre forward with nous, good physical strength and a desire to play. we have been unable to hold the ball in the opponents half and its cost us and I guarantee if we get it forward and support him Holt will provide what is required. If Powell wants to play this way Holt or a similar player was essential. Holt/Wells/Vaughan becomes a much more interesting and variable striking trio...

As I posted elsewhere, if Holt remains at Wigan for the remainder of his contract it will cost them over £5 million (£2million transfer fee from Norwich and a rumoured £20,000 a week). Coyle must have been happy with the transfer fee and his wages, but many Wigan fans haven't much time for him because he's supposed to be a poor trainer.
