we did from kick off till we scored, then dropped right off into our own half, quite a lot of the time holt was back in our half. We didn't then shove onto them as soon as they got in our half, it was quite odd to watch? after they scored we resumed what we had been doing and we did trade breaks with them in the second half. it was quite a strange 20 odd minutes in the first half, we just sat and watched them bring the ball, often well into our half before playing the pass??? most of the game was pretty evenly matched, just not sure what happened after we scored? I think we felt comfortable because until they scored they had little or nothing by way of goalscoring chances, just lots of dreadfull long shots or totally wasted crosses etc.. But if you give them half a pitch to work in and they get enough free kicks/corners or shots, chances are they will create something or it will fall for them and it did?? strange? I have read CPs report but its just about how we thought about playing them rather than what he thought we could/may have done to impress our game on them a bit more.. maybe we just need a few more games without losing or losing badly etc to get a bit more confidence in him and the team to do more of what we do well rather than trying to stop the opposition playing their way? I think maybe he is trying to find out a way to make us into a similar team as Charlton used to be. Not many spectacular wins but a lot of hard earned 1-0's 2-1's, but maybe I'm imaging in that. I got the sense he was truly shocked that we battered Blackpool for half an hour - but so was I.

We just didn't click like we have in other recent games. It was all a bit one paced and deliberate. Also thought the movement was a bit lacking. Thought Holt had a poor game myself and Id have taken him off after an hour. he should be bang up for Ipswich though being a norwich legend, so Id certainly keep him in there. Credit to our keeper again though who didn't put a foot or a finger wrong again. 2 great bits of keeping to keep us a point to go with the great save on Saturday that stopped Blackpool equalising. Next time he makes anything resembling an error, maybe folk will remember games like those before calling him a liability, useless, etc ?? Like the weak shot he almost fumbled in to his net at the weekend

We were playing an out of form Championship team. Powell set us up like we were away to Barcelona.

The truth is that Alex is, like most keepers at this level, a mixture of both. He is at times a liability and at other times a very good keeper. Fortunately, his good points outweigh his bad.

We were playing an out of form Championship team. Powell set us up like we were away to Barcelona. Brighton had one major threat. Pace. He set the team up to defuse their pace by restricting the space they had to work in and it was successful for about 95% of the time. Our strength was the ability to get down the sides - which worked until the front 3 tired. Brighton have struggled to score goals to get wins but they are far from mugs - their retention of possession was good, but they could barely work it in to threatening positions, because Powell's tactics stopped them. But for a scrambled, fortunate goal difficult to legislate for, we'd have won.

But for a scrambled, fortunate goal difficult to legislate for, we'd have won. Completely agree mate. Thought Brighton were as good a footballing side as I've seen here for some time. They were very slick in the ball movement and their obvious tactic is to try and draw players out of a position and hit the space with quick passing and movement, or long diagonals. We spent the whole match trying to not do that, which meant that we sat deeper and held positions. They rarely threatened despite being an infinitely better footballing side than us. Powell got his tactics spot on and whilst we can yearn for four or five players closing down at all times, we were very disciplined and kept our shape very well. Unfortunately, as the game progressed we became more and more laboured on the ball and our threat disappeared as well. They scored from a fortunate knock-down in the box and had one other clear chance that was ruled offside. Other than Smithies sharply stopping a through ball and him getting a bit of a hand to the shot against the bar, he was almost pedestrian for the rest of the match - our organisation was very good. We could have lost the game, fine margins are just that, but even if we had, I saw enough last night to see that Powell has got us going in the right direction with the tactical structure of the team and their ability to follow instructions and maintain a shape. My only criticism would be that we didn't make the best use of subs last night. Bunn gained a second wind towards the end, but had been laboured for the previous 20 mins. Scannell was out on his feet second half - but then I suppose he only really had Ward who he could bring on for either of those, as Paterson and Wells would have struggled to do the defensive side that the two wider players have to do. having Hammill back available would help to give us more scope. Possibly Dixon could have come on and played in front of Robinson. FWIW, I think Brighton are only a decent centre-forward (and maybe a better keeper) away from being a very, very good side. Baldock looked like a League 1 player and O'Grady was equally ineffective. I was very impressed with the holding midfielder, Holla and Lewis Dunk gets better every time I see him.

At this level and at every level. Watched real v Liverpool tonight. Both keepers in that very top level game have had some right mares over the past year. Far more than Smithies has.

Think he is slowly improving based on last few games....probably because those in front are performing better as well. He is a decent keeper......but i still think there is room for much improvement, particularly his positioning from free kicks and corners where he stands too far out or right alongside attackers who restrict his movement and ability to command his 6 yd box. One terrific save to preserve a point tues night, and should be getting more confident as results and performances improve.....long may it continue as i suspect sat he and the defence will need to be at their best to deal with ipswichs aerial prowess.

Nice little hand ball for their goal.

Yep definitley looks like he moves to control it with his arm rather than a chance deflection.

On the other hand, Forster-Caskey was just nearer the ball than Lynch when Lua Lua passed it through for their disallowed effort.

I thought we sat back against Blackpool as well after we got the 3rd goal. I wasn't really surprised they scored from the free-kick. As usual we don't put a man on the post in these circumstances. That's twice this season.
