Posted by Terrierdaz on behalf of Owd Jim Town’s opponents-Ipswich Town Record is: League | P | W | D | L | F | A | GD | Home | 19 | 9 | 4 | 6 | 28 | 23 | 5 | Away | 19 | 2 | 3 | 14 | 19 | 5 | -26 | Total | 38 | 11 | 7 | 20 | 48 | 68 | -21 |
Gates Have Been: League | Best | Worst | Average | Home | 1970/71 =17,944 | 1987/88=4,823 | 11,732 | Away | 1999/2000=21,233 | 1987/88=9,984 | 14,340 |
Although formed 30 years prior to Huddersfield Town the two sides have met only infrequently over the years and in fact did not meet at all until1957/58. The first ever match took place at Leeds Road on 12th, October 1957 and, in front of 15,276 Town triumphed 3-0 thanks to DB Deacon(og), McHale and Bain. The return fixture at Portman Road on 5th, April 1958 was a disaster as Ipswich won easily 4-0 watched by 15,712. The next season the only cup tie ever was played in the FA Cup 3rd round on 10th, January 1959 at Portman Road where the hosts won 1-0 in front of a gate of 14,521. The league games were actually better in that Town won at home, again 3-0 on 7th March 1959 with Low, Bain and Howard scoring before a gate of only 9,604. Earlier the sides had drawn 0-0 at Portman Road on 18th, October 1958 where 14,578 turned out. The following season was actually the best ever for the Terriers as they complete the ‘double’ 3-1 and 4-1 which was the only time that the Terriers ever scored more than 3 goals at Portman Road. The away game was on opening day on 22nd, August 1959 and a crowd of 14,441 saw Ledger, Low and Hawksworth(2) score for the visitors. The return fixture on 19th December saw Hawksworth (again), Massie and Coddington(p) find the net for the home side watched by a poor pre-Christmas crowd of 10,648. The terriers did not win again on enemy turf until 1996/97 (7th, September) when Payton(2) and Stewart saw the Terriers safely home 3-1. The gate was11,166. Strangely, while Town has only won away twice, both times produced a ‘double’. The home game was a Christmas fixture on 28th, December with Lawson and Payton scoring in a 2-0 win. For a Christmas game the crowd was poor, only 11,467 came, slightly below the average gate. The only other away point came in 1965/66 when the crowd was 14,283 on 31st, August when Gilliver scored both goals in a 2-2 draw. The remaining 13 away games have been dreadful from the terriers point of view, all ended up in the loss column with the heaviest defeats coming in 1997/98 when the Tractor Boys thumped the Terriers 5-1 on Valentine’s Day. Stewart scored a consolation goal for the visitors sending most of the 10,509 crowd home happy. Four times town has lost 0-3 at Portman Road, 1966/67, 1986/87, 1987/88 and 1998/99. The middle two seasons earned the Tractor Boys ‘doubles’ as they also won at Leeds Road 2-1 on both occasions. Ipswich has earned three more doubles, 1960/61 when they inflicted a 4-2 defea t on the Terriers and beat them at Leeds Road 3-1. In 1967/68 the scores were 1-4 at home and 0-2 away; in 1971/72 at the start of The Great Slide the Terriers lost 1-3 at home and 0-1 away. Only four games have been played in the top flight, that season and the one before when town won at home 1-0 but Ipswich won on their park 2-0. The best and worst gates have come as noted above in1970/71 which saw Town’s only top flight win. The worst gate came in the shocking season of 1987/88 when Town finished a full 19 points short of safety and were relegated dead last on 28 points. The team won only 6 games out of 44 that season. The worst away gate of 9,984 also came that season on 3rd, November. At Portman Road the best gate was the last time the sides met in 1999/2000, 12th February, when Gorre scored in a 1-2 losing cause. At least the Terriers won the home fixture 3-1 (Dyson, Beech and Stewart) when the gate was below average at 12,093 on 2nd, November 1999. Thirteen years later in 2012/13 the teams met again. On 1st September Town went to Portman Road and drew 2-2 in a game in which both sides played good football and both could have won. Town should have won when Vaughan had a penalty saved in the last few minutes. He and Clayton scored their first goals for Town. The return match was rubbish between two crap teams and the inevitable 0-0 draw resulted. In 2013/14 the visit to Portman Road on 7th December saw The Terriers throw the game away. Vaughan was an utter twit missing an early penalty, just as last time (his second miss out of four for the season). Ward sent the visitors in ahead at the break but an early equaliser gave the Tractor Boys confidence and a daft defensive slip gave them the winner on 89 minutes. The Terriers were marginally the better side and but for the unforced errors could have and should have won. Ipswich came to Town after a dismal effort on the previous Saturday by the Terriers and this game on 8th April was even worse. The Tractor Boys scored on 6 minute and will not win an easier 3 points this year. A second ‘gift’ goal on 33 minutes condemned the Terriers to yet another home defeat. The home side delivered utter bilge and should all forfeit their pay for the week. This meant 8 games without a win and 3 points from 24. The Terriers have an abysmal record at Portman Road with just 2 wins from 19 attempts, both games coming near the end of last century. The Tractor Boys have lost only once at home, to their Norfolk rivals Norwich 0-1 towards the end of August. Their other home games have gone, on opening day versus Fulham 2-1, Millwall, BHA and Rotherham all 2-0 and lastly Blackburn 1-1. Since the Terriers are still prone to giving away daft goals I expect another defeat on Saturday 2-0 to Ipswich.
