The euphoria for me as a 9 yr old the day he scored the winner against Newport to get us promoted will stay with me forever. i got dragged along to some family thing at the Three Owls in Kirkburton that night when all I wanted to do was read my programme at home. What a thrill to then meet him later as he was in there having a meal with his missus. Im old enough to buy him a pint now but sadly cant be there on Saturday. Thanks for the memories though Dave, that side were heroes to me.

Cheers mids for the upload - unbelievable :-)
Funny thing is, I just can't remember how that goal happened. Remember only the end, where Cowling seemed to ghost in - suddenly you realised - we're about to score - he nodded it a bit high, almost went over but snuck in? I've never known a crowd go so mental.

As a kid growing up could never understand those who booed the best and most consistent crosser of a ball i have ever seen at town....and that includes mally brown, pilkington, mark smith! Because it was the 1980s..and he was soft as shite He could cross a ball though. Before the days of the early cross he was doing it, at pace, with bend.

Hope it will be a full house on Sat lunchtime!! Home made meat and potato pie, bacon butties, hand pulled ale and football on several TV's all at the only pre-match venue where your cash spent supports the club!!! Any questions for my all time favourite player if you can't make it.

1. How and why did Huddersfield bring him to the club after making no appearances for Mansfield?
2. How does he react to Steve Kindon openly stating he loved playing in the same team as Dave Cowling because the team knew that he'd never be expected to make a tackle and the team could react accordingly and anticipate this?
3. How good was Mick Buxton?
4. How is he still involved in the game today? Wikipedia has him doing a lot of things.

He scored a fantastic goal in a 1-1 draw away at Port Vale in 1980, the reason I remember that particular day was the coach driver got lost and took us to Stoke's ground, happy days.

He skipped out of tackles so was bit embarassing that's only reason some folk complained i think,
i didn't,it was embarrassment when we had a tough tackling midfield and such a hard working team.
But boy did he score some special goals,I'll never forget the goal at Elland Road
you've got to love him for that and the goal in front of the Cowshed against Newport was a classic.

Prefer to remember the positives than all this 'soft as shite' stuff. You don't play 340 times for your club if you're a passenger!

Exactly, as a winger he wasn't in the team for his bone crunching tackling ability but rather his skill at crossing the ball and on that score IMO he is without equal in my 40 odd years watching Town.

Ill nail my colours to the mast.. Although I think Cowling had a pearler of a left foot he was no favourite of mine, or most town fans at the time . I think nostalgia is playing tricks on some people . He was however part of my favourite town team and undoubtedly at the heart of many amazing town moments. And the significance of that goal at ER was massive ... We take the Leeds games for granted nowadays. Most choose not to go. But back then we were rising from over half a decade in the basement league. Leeds were on the wane following a decade of being one of the top three teams in England, and we hadn't played competitively for years.... Back then the league cup meant something, 'twas no reserve competition like its become today. Beating their top men with our top men, deservedly.. At their gaff... Meant so much .. And Cowling scored the goal so he will go down in folklore
My questions for DC
What do you consider to be the best town performance in your ten years at town ? When and where did mick Buxton give the players their biggest bollocking ? When playing in a home match were you aware of the stick you were getting from the east terrace and how did it affect your mind set and performance ? Have you any stories about being managed by Malcolm mcdonald ?

Being youngish at the time and impressionable, it was his ability to ignore the booboys and put in consistent performances week in and week out with his many crucial assists and the odd vital goal was the main reason he was my favourite of the time. His crossing skill has yet to be matched by anyone in blue and white stripes since and IMO he also had great ability to find that yard of freedom to put in the cross when not blessed with any real pace, trickery or the best right foot.

I once stood down the front Doc and was shocked and appalled at the abuse flying his way. Thinking back to when I played, I was twice the player when confident. Stick like that would have crippled me .. Hence the question

Stick like that would have crippled me .. Hence the question I agree that's why I added a similar question to mids list earlier in the thread. I also seem to remember him scoring a few at the near post from the wing as goalies seemed to be ready to come out to try and catch the cross, despite his crucial and memorable goals against Barnsley (29,001), L666s and Newport, one of his best performances came on the night that a young John Barnes came to Town. Town won 2-1 in the first leg against the side that finished runners up in the then 1st division (and ultimately the tie with a draw a week later at Vicarage road) He scored one and produced a superb last minute cross from which a Watford defender could only turn it into his own net.

Great memories ... I remember a game v Reading.. We had just been promoted from the 4th . DC launched a signature cross from the touch line and keeper Steve Death ( yes really) misjudged it in the sun and it went sailing in... Cowshed gave that keeper dogs abuse

Ask him , given the state of the game now where players are not allowed within a yard of each other how he thinks his game would have been better suited?

I guess on regional yorkshire tv and it was one of Mark Lillis' first games as he was interviewed afterwards and he really came across as a passionate lad with his heart on his sleeve and if I may say it a bit thick (in the nicest possible terms), there was no media training in those days.

I just checked back and it was our first win that season at the 5th attempt (7th including cups) Good job there was no Datm that year Buxton wouldn't have been popular We did recover to just miss out in 4th place by 3 points to 3rd placed Charlton, and I wonder why I've never liked them. 1980/1 season
