Ridiculous decision.
Its similar to how fans occasionally "target" a player for abuse throughout a match... Then he scores and give it the old cupped ear or celebrates in front of them usually to a wall of outrage and cries off, "he can't do that, get him booked the wanker".
Football is pantomime, and is at its very best when it's played out like pantomime. You can't have a villain if he's not allowed to shout back..that removes his villain status and just makes the baying hordes bullies.
This particular bully seems to have won, backed by the FA. It goes totally against their supposed stance on such behaviour.
Clowns.

Wow! What a precident. Basically, it's a free for all on ALL the players in the Football League to ban them if they enter in 'bants' with fans who give them shit on Twitter!
Utter, utter bullshit from the FA. Opened a can of worms on themselves.
Although not related to footy, KP in his book said that when he was abused on Twitter, would often look at the offending twat's profile pic, and return a personal attack on their appearance - very often this resulted in KP's followers hammering the relevant person with a 'ha! You fucking idiot' type of return on the offending twat.
Most of us have seen players from our team skirt very close to similar abuse/feedback on Twitter....
Where do you draw the line? This will no doubt result in clubs becoming more 'involved' on Twitter and basically shut down the players - if it results in bans, affecting results! What a crock of shit!!

Would he have been banned if he hadn't used the word set ? I've no idea what it meant ( in the same way I didn't know slope was offensive til somebody got professionally offended about Top Gear), I also didn't know about choc ice til the Ashley Cole thing but I can't help thinking Ferdinand is trying to be too clever for a thick cockney bastard

Rio Ferdinand is in a privileged position (partly earned through talent) and has been round long enough to know the consequences of his actions on twitter...
I'm really quite glad my social media footprint is v limited - so much shit could have come back to haunt me when I'm famous...

Was this a troll? All the guy said was that QPR should get a new centre back in cos they need one. And he's right because Ferdinand has been utter shite for them!
So RF spends his life on twitter and then when he gets criticism ( not abuse, just criticism) he basically calls the fellas mother a slag!
I mean how thick is Rio really? Moaning about JT being racist to his brother, so re-tweets a racist comment himself about Ashley Cole. Now this gem. Great player in his prime and more money than he'll ever know what to do with, but a complete shit for brains if ever there was one.

The Football Association has collected about £350,000 in fines from social-media-related offences in the past three years.
Nice work if you can get it.

Given the entire world to choose from to talk to, would you walk up to someone you don't really know, called Alex Smithies specifically and say, "Town should get a new keeper, cos they need one"? "Mr Powell, I reckon Town should get a new manager" "Dean, this club really need a new owner". Its just plain disrespectful and rude and would deserve a short shrift brush off.

Why is there even need for this word? ?? Along with Selfie I find it utterly ridiculous!!!!! It is someone online offering his opinion, that is all, why should it even bother Rio??? It just highlights that the main reason why all these players are online is to boost there ego, he will be more than happy when people are singing his praises on there. If you can't take the abuse then don't sign up, simple.

Same reason there's a fishing smiley, or why WUMs exist.
Its NOT someone offering his opinion, its someone baiting Rio in an attempt to get a rise out of him.
I'm 100% certain that seeing the instigators previous Tweets would demonstrate that.

Don't know about previous tweets, just whats been said about this one, which wasn't abusive, was critical and was also correct. If you're a high profile player who chooses to promote himself on twitter, then you have to be able to cope with stick without firing back offensive abuse. If you can't then you'd be better off leaving it.
Don't know if the FA should be fining or banning somebody for being a c*nt on social media though. But the story here is what a classless shit for brains Ferdinand is IMO, not that that's exactly breaking news!

"If you wouldn't say to someone's face what you intend tweeting at them, don't do it".This is my main point though, Rio Ferdinand wouldn't speak to however many millions of followers face to face so why feel the need to do it and who are we to judge what this guy would say to his face??? I would have no problem at all telling Rio Ferdinand to his face that I think he has been garbage for the last few years, however I aren't friends with Rio so such a situation would never arise. Rio uses Twitter to engage with his followers which may give some of them the feeling that they are ok to engage in a conversation with the guy, is this only to be allowed if they are saying positive things?? Having just seen the tweet in question I think Rio's response was bang out of order.

Footballer or ex pop star, why does one have to have the moral fortitude of a nun, whilst the other would be lauded for posting this?

I suppose my opinion is swayed because I find Rios response quite funny (well I would do if I knew what a sket was)...and certainly not deserving of a £25000 fine, when someone can threaten a shopkeeper with a knife and steal his days takings, or drive the wrong way down the motorway at 100mph and get away with lesser punishment. Its just an equivalent of last years schoolyard "your mums face..." comeback.

Having just seen the tweet in question I think Rio's response was bang out of order. Not at all. What was the guy who trolled/messaged Rio's punishment? None. If some complete stranger has a (verbal) pop at you, you're not allowed to respond? Either the guy who messaged Rio was engaging in 'banter' - in which case giving as good as you get is par for the course - or the guy meant to verbally abuse him, in which case he got off lightly. No punishment required & the FA have been out of order sticking their noses in where it's not required.
