This is my main point though, Rio Ferdinand wouldn't speak to however many millions of followers face to face so why feel the need to do it and who are we to judge what this guy would say to his face??? I would have no problem at all telling Rio Ferdinand to his face that I think he has been garbage for the last few years, however I aren't friends with Rio so such a situation would never arise. Rio uses Twitter to engage with his followers which may give some of them the feeling that they are ok to engage in a conversation with the guy, is this only to be allowed if they are saying positive things?? Having just seen the tweet in question I think Rio's response was bang out of order. Not at all. What was the guy who trolled/messaged Rio's punishment? None. If some complete stranger has a (verbal) pop at you, you're not allowed to respond? Either the guy who messaged Rio was engaging in 'banter' - in which case giving as good as you get is par for the course - or the guy meant to verbally abuse him, in which case he got off lightly. No punishment required & the FA have been out of order sticking their noses in where it's not required. But he's not being punished for replying, he's being punished for using (apparently) offensive language which isn't the first time he's done it. He could just use twitter in future to remind him when his drug test is due Sent from my GT-I9505 using proboards

Fair point. I stand corrected.

someone who 'missed' 3 separate drugs tests and has 'associates' that are involved in more 'naughtyness' than Mr Naughty on a very, very naughty day shouldn't get involved in any name calling on social media.

Only just bothered to look at what he actually put, while there's no problem with a bit of banter and players giving it back to fans for someone who's so massively in the limelight he's gone too far with his comment in the context of what was said to him.

So...
If Rio Ferdinand, a professional footballer, calls a referees mother, or someone in the crowd, a "sket", DURING a football match...in response to his ability being questioned (indirectly or directly)..he'll get a red card and a 2 match ban, and a £35 or whatever the standard processing fee is for getting a red card.
If Rio Ferdinand, a professional footballer, says the same thing on line, as a vaguely funny/belittling response to a Man City fan who is taking the mick, he gets a THREE match ban, and a £25k fine?? BECAUSE he happens to be a footballer???
Jeremy Clarkson uses a similarly obscure, but much worse (given its racist) word, UNPROVOKED, in response to nothing, towards an unsuspecting anonymous individual, which goes out on primetime UK TV...and he gets.." Warned as to his future conduct" ??
He's a footballer, not a 24x7 paragon of righteous virtue bound by a secret code of holy goodness.
I don't particularly like Rio Ferdinand as a person or a footballer, (actually, I don't really have an opinion one way or the other to be honest...I don't know of these missed drug tests or "dodgy company" tales alluded to, which some might consider make him a worthy target, as I'm not really that interested in professional football outside of Hudds Town)...but the whole thing seems frankly ridiculous.
Although, I have learned a new word, so that's good.

Agree totally about the ban fmuk. Its got sod all to do with the FA if Rio ferdinand is a classless oaf on twitter IMO.
They make a never ending list of stupid decisions that they'd be better off focussing on.

If he'd insulted the person who insulted him, that would be something and nothing. But he didn't. He accused a perfectly respectable older lady, who had said and done nothing to him, of being a prostitute - just because he took offence at her son suggesting he's no longer a good player.
There have been people on this very thread suggesting he's not a very good player, too, and I agree with them. But if I disagreed, the correct response would be to tell you so, and to tell you why. Not make false allegations about your mother.

I totally agree re the stupidness of the ban .... A bit ironic though that this paragon of virtue, who was at the forefront of the kick it out campaign, who took such exception ( rightly) at the gutter words of John Terry, brings himself down to that level by being disrespectful towards the female gender

Ferdinand and FA both go hand in hand pillocks....
FA will fleece the everyday footy fan all day long and get a middle aged muppet to front them and be a yes man, only need to look at double standards with bookings suspensions and dont even get me started on why the FA cup semis should be played on neutral ground as wembley has paid itself now and we have great grounds around country to host semi finals and the Final should always be the pinacle of every players career a wembley final.
As for knobhead Ferdinand ,held the FA to ransom when came out of retirement then said didnt wanna go to world cup, Blames Fa for there policies on drugs (REALLY)...i can go on ....but i wont we know he is a talented footballer one fine day but sometimes as a professional sportsman and an icon to thousands of youngsters dont need to do it
