Rooney's a striker. Shilton was a keeper. Of course they're different. Rooney has weaved hair. Shilton had a lovely thick perm. Of course they're different. Rooney earns more in a year than Shilton did throughout his long career, and at the bookies. Of course they're different.

Rooney's hair is so bad, I have no idea why he went to so much effort for the transplant as it looks shit. No shame in just going bald and shaving his head. Admittedly it would make him look even more like a potato but a pig in a toupée is still a pig!

What's the news here Nick?
Shilton gained over 100 caps
Rooney has 99 and likely will gain his 100th tomorrow.
You clearly rate Shilton who would have had many more caps if he didn't rotate with Clemence for so long and got 61 caps himself
OR as I suspect is it just another way to have a dig at Rooney?
Is it Rooney's fault that we don't have better strikers to replace him?

Try as I might I'm finding it very difficult to compare a goalkeeper with a striker!

Rooney got caught out shagging a rather senior hooker. Shilts got caught with another blokes wife in a car hed just crashed. Something to compare perhaps?
Well done to Rooney on 100 caps. great achievement and almost certain to end up englands all time appearence maker and goalscorer .

Yeah I guess so but unfortunately I don't remember a single moment of joy Rooney has brought to me as an England fan. Always just disappointment as the perennial under achiever, flattering to deceive but never delivering on the international stage. Couldn't give a shit if he's got 100 caps. Massive disappointment as an England player and peppered with his unpleasant, class-less outbursts and seedy goings on in his personal life. Strange choice for England captain is 'Wazza' IMO.

The big question for me is whether Rooney will become England's all time leading scorer before Own Goals does. I know Oggy's had a longer career, but he's taking his time to get to the mark. Numbers are here

Rooney's performance at Portugal 2004 was as good as any England player's performance (IMO on a par with Owen's 98) at a finals tournament since 1990.

That's even more impressive considering the competition Shilts had with Ray Clemence at the time - IIRC Shilts would play some games and then RC

Hes always failed to deliver in the major finals and that will blight his reputation as a player, no doubt about it. The only exception being in 2004 as a youngster, when he lit up the team and to a certain extent the entire tournament. Hes never really reached the same heights again so maybe he peaked very very young. As for his personal life- he strayed off the moral path a little when he was very young. big deal. You'd have to be pretty holier than though to hold that against him IMO. And saying hes been a 'massive disappointment' for england, when he will become the nations all time caps holder and all time goalscorer , is just plain stupid.

Both men of few words...mumblers. Shilton in 1982...top drawer...Shilton in 1990...cost us a final place (and promptly retired on landing back at Luton). Met him once as manager of Plymouth....if Rooney was coming my way i would cross the road to avoid him. Without footy he would be in the clink...a tool.

Remind me why shilts cost us a final place in 1990? The german goal was a massive deflection off paul parker which flew over his head into the one place it would beat him- unlucky.
He didn't save a pen I suppose, but not sure hes at fault for that. I think we should have brought Beasant on for the pens- he was a great keeper at facing pens.

'Massive disappointment' sums up his England career perfectly for me, not stupid, just how i feel based the last 4 tournaments. We're all allowed the odd indiscretion, yes, he's had lots. That as well as all the contract shenanigans at man u. Even his own fans don't like him. I wouldn't mind if he never played for England again. Opinions. Sent from my GT-I9505 using proboards

Shilton might have been good, but no better than that. As I recall he NEVER saved a single penalty and, more than that, he never looked likely to get anywhere near one. I've seen much more agile and able goalkeepers in league games in recent years.

Sent from my GT-I9505 using proboards The only indiscretion I know of in his personal life was the granny hooker when he was a kid. What are the other seedy goings on that hes had lots of? Have you had less indiscretions in your life? You must have to be so pious, but I haven't and Im just glad I haven't had an army of tabloid hacks and camera phones watching my every move since I was 16. Disappointing in finals of tournaments- undoubtably and Im sure hed agree. Disappointing for England when he'll play and score more than anyone else in history- no, thats just stupid. Its like the Irish saying Robbie Keane has been disappointing for them- he's done knack-all in major finals too!! I wouldn't mind if he never played for england again either- IF we had someone better. Same if hed never played for England at all IF we'd had someone better. But we haven't had and currently don't have. Is that something to hate him for too? Contract shenanigans? Someone getting the best deal they can for himself you mean. Good job none of us fans would consider doing that in our lives eh? Hypocritically slagging footballers off for doing the same things we do is like a national past time IMO
