My wife and I have just returned home from a weekend in Exeter. I decided to go watch Exeter City v Shrewsbury Town whilst my wife enjoyed a glass or two of wine back at the hotel after a morning shopping round the Christmas Market.
I saw a belter of a game, Exeter fighting back from 2 down at half time to win 3-2. Shrewsbury have this young red-haired midfielder called Ryan Woods. He got a lot of compliments from the pundits when the Shrews v Chelsea League Cup game was shown on Sky a few weeks ago, and yesterday I thought he was outstanding. I don't think I've ever seen a better and more composed performance from a very young lad. He's only 18-19 but he was quality. What was most noticeable to me was that he was always looking around to find and move into space to receive the pass and move it on quickly and incisively. Town just have to take a look at him, in my opinion. Note the name.

We'll only get him if we take a punt now before others start to take interest - a real gamble, but he's not gonna cost much is he? Only thing against him is he's 5' 8''. For fear of causing a rumpus about being "shortist" (see Whelan threads!), is he strong enough on the ball? He doesn't score many, but what's his position?

For fear of causing a rumpus about being "shortest" (see Whelan threads!), is he strong enough on the ball? He doesn't score many, but what's his position? He was the midfield play-maker yesterday, in the middle of midfield. 5' 8" seems about right - similar build to Hogg. He seemed strong enough, won his share of challenges, but he stood out for me because he had the ability to make time and space for himself, controlled the ball instantly and hardly ever wasted a pass. He was always alert, looking around and on the move. As I said, it was an exceptional performance on the day. Plenty of Exeter fans complimented his performance too, comparing him to Grimes, their own England U-20 player, who also looked decent, but Woods was better (a lot) yesterday!

Get a mail off to Ross Wilson.
Anyone seen this lad at Chesterfield Eoin Doyle. Couple of very composed finishes yesterday and good stats. We'll need one when Holt goes back in Jan.

Emailed Ross Wilson today and received a very courteous reply this evening. Town are well aware of Ryan Woods and Matt Grimes.

Double peg your tent in the wind and always pitch upwind of the silage pit.

I was worried I would lose sleep on this but I am glad I can now go to bed knowing Brentford's Ryan Woods is being raved about by Wolverhampton supporters.

He is gonna be a good little player.
Always thought we should have tried to get the little Ginger lad from Sheff Utd (play off) and then went to Hull ? Maybe, Dunno.
Little ginger midfielders always seem to be good when they make it, All good tough little players with a non stop action and a nasty streak.
I like em.

Town were aware of Vardy, Wilson, Le Fondre, Russell and the full-back at Derby when he was at Coventry, but hesitated at the prices. We could have had Vardy for £175,000, and we weren't prepared to pay a million for Russell when he was in Scotland. How many more players are going to slip through the net because of Town's incompetence?

Good spot Epsom - shame nothing came out of it for Town - always a lot going on behind the scenes that means we just don't have the means to secure these players or indeed the players themselves aren't interested...

We could have had Vardy for £175,000, and we weren't prepared to pay a million for Russell when he was in Scotland. How many more players are going to slip through the net because of Town's incompetence? Are you quoting those figures anecdotally or are/were you an agent, have inside information etc.? Just because we didn't sign these players doesn't mean we didn't try or were incompetent. Sometimes the players themselves or through the influence of agents decide to to reject the deal & I expect the clauses in these deals nowadays are quite complex and lucrative/expensive depending on which side of the contract you're sitting... We certainly weren't the first club to let good prospects 'slip the net' and we won't be the last. The only one I recall quite publicly was DH's reference to not wishing to pay £1m for Rickie Lambert because of his age & the fact we were in L1 at the time. We should be thankful that we're a club that whilst still beholden to the market aren't in the same position as lower league clubs who have pretty much zero chance of holding on to decent players, particularly young prospects...

Ironic that almost twelve months after I started this thread we get more replies to it now than back then! Yeah, I can spot a player. FWIW Ross Wilson later told me that Town were the first club to make a formal offer for Matt Grimes, but Exeter turned it down knowing full well there'd be interest from others, and he ended up going to Swansea where he's "doing a Dempsey" it seems. Town are continuing to monitor Tom Nichols of Exeter on my recommendation and Wheeler's looking good this season, so keep an eye on him.

Just a bit further up the A38 is Plymouth Argyle , and won't be long before a big club snaps up Reuben Reid.

Just a bit further up the A38 is Plymouth Argyle , and won't be long before a big club snaps up Reuben Reid. Highly unlikely that a 'big' club will snap up a 27yr old journeyman with a couple of prolific seasons in the basement division behind him. Always struck me as a League 1/2 striker. He's decent at the level he's at, but he doesn't have the power of a Rickie Lambert which allowed him to step up relatively late, nor the pace of Vardy.
