Not Town or even football related, but just wanted to say how sad today's news about Philip Hughes passing on is The Australian cricketer was caught by a bouncer on the back of his head / neck, just below the helmet. The blow caused bleeding in his brain, he managed to stay standing for about 5 seconds before falling face first onto the wicket. It's a freak accident that triggered a really rare injury (the blow split his vertebral artery). He was 25. Just awful. I think Jim Maxwell's announcement of the news sums it all up. soundcloud.com/702abcsydney/jim-maxwell-on-the-sad-news-ofThe other person to consider here is Sean Abbot, the bowler of the bouncer. Kid is only 22 and is reportedly completely destroyed.

Certainly sad news. Apparently only 100 other cases reported, only 1 of which involved a cricket ball.
Agree about Sean Abbott as well. A tragic accident, yet I've no doubt he'll feel responsible and I'd dread to think what was going through his head before the news of the death, let alone since the news of it. He'll need a massive amount of support from everyone. I understand everyone talking about Hughes, but it is worth remembering Abbott in all this, because it could completely break him mentally.

A truly shocking sporting tragedy. This will resonate with anybody who's played cricket and especially in our area whereby many have played against Test pacemen hired in for the summer by local clubs. And many played without lids back in the day. RIP Philip Hughes.

RIP Phil Hughes. I posted in the RIP thread about how unlucky Hughes is. As a cricketer myself, obviously not to his level, I've seen loads of lads get hit on the head with no helmet against some pretty quick bowling on some pretty awful tracks. He's so unlucky, I hope he didn't go through any pain. As said above, remember Abbot in all this to, the poor lad will need massive support because no matter how my ho fan accident it was it will always be in his head. Gutted for them both.

According to the Doc, the vertebrate cranial artery(?) was crushed, which meant that it then ruptured causing a massive bleed in the cranium. He wasn't dead when he hit the floor, but the emergency staff could only keep him breathing artificially. Talk about turning the lights off. This injury is only known to have happened about 100 times and only once (now twice) to a cricketer.

Given that a natural instinct is to turn away from a bouncer, I'm surprised this rarely happens. Hopefully some sort of design change to helmets can provide better protection in future. Too late to help Phil unfortunately and my heart goes out to his family, and to the bowler who will now carry this for the rest of his life, poor lad.

tragic news agree that hopefully something can be done in terms of looking into a possible change to helmets. RIP Phil Hughes

Terrible news. For someone so young to be taken away doing what he loved is a real tragedy. Thoughts go out to his family, friends and especially Sean Abbott, can't imagine how he must be feeling right now. RIP Phil Hughes.

Wow, brought a tear to the eye that link vid. Rip, such a sad loss. As for Abbott, I knew someone who was involved in a somewhat similar incident but in football. Tackle made, freak accident occurred and a boy ended up losing his life. It got easier for him and it will for Abbott.

And many played without lids back in the day. RIP Philip Hughes. I'm from the pre-helmet era and used to see people get clonked on a regular basis - especially batting on some of the dodgy pitches as well. You didn't need to be facing a test paceman! The helmets have no doubt saved quite a few lives but hope they can come up with a better design that protects the back of the neck. Shocking news.

As I put in the off topic thread, thoughts go out to Sean Abbot who must be feeling terrible right now.
Such a shame to be killed playing the game he loved.

Awful news, and obviously deeply upsetting someone so young has died playing cricket, but the person I feel for most is Sean Abbott. There's just no way to ever fully recover from something like that, through no malice or fault of his own he's somehow responsible for the death of a fellow professional. I can't even begin to imagine what he's going through now, and just hope that everyone continues to rally behind him and support him in the way they already have. I also think the suggestion of a minutes applause every time a batsman reaches 63 not out for Australia or South Australia would be a fantastic touch.

having dodged and been hit with a few from 'reasonably' quick bowlers, the idea that batting in the professional games isn't a 'mans' job always made me laugh. Even with the helmet and the protective gear a very quick one that rises and swings and 'follows' you is hard to avoid. You would have to ask the pros what they feel about rule changes on bowling short ones etc, I think you would find that though desperate about this tragedy, they would keep it the same. I do cringe a bit when tail enders get some naughty ones but they do get their own back as they tend to be the 'quickies'.
desperately unlucky..but its always there and fielding close up wont get any safer either..

If anyone is interested, his funeral will take place this coming Wednesday at 3am UK time, and the 1st test between Australia and India won't begin the following day (which is totally understandable). Australia have also agreed to retire the number 64 in ODI cricket after a request from the players.
