On attaining the milestone of 700 games as a manager (apparently he also played in > 700! ) During his 70 odd games in charge here our team played probably the most attractive football that I can remember in 50+ years of support.. Here's to the next 700 Steve --- what a bloody shame it didn't work out here UTT

I've never understood the pure hatred that some of our fans have towards him. He had his faults & made some big mistakes but as said above, the standard of football in his first six months in charge was streets ahead of anything we've seen since.

I think the general feeling was that he gave up as soon as it became clear that Rubery's heart wasn't really in it. That, and the fact that he pissed off halfway around the world to cover Man Utd's games in the World Club Championship for TV at a vital point of the season.

One of the worst days in our history.

Mr X supported the sale of MS. I was at the Patron's meeting before MS's last game at Crystal Palace. He said you have to wonder why there had been no offer from a Premiership club for MS. The next season he was top scorer (or thereabouts) in the Premiership. That's Bruce's judgement for you. He also pissed off the women present with some tactless remarks. Put it down to experience (or lack of) at the time. On the other hand there were rumoured reasons of the 'other' sort for the enforced departure of MS. Maybe SB was merely a victim of the politics of the time. I remain neutral on all this. He seemed to be an honourable man and has done well since. Good luck to him. Now, as for Ayresole ....... what a queynt.

I well recall seeing Mr Bruce on Look North on that miserable day. It was very clear from his demeanor the he had had a major asset removed in his quest for promotion. From memory his words when asked about Marcus' whereabouts were something like "Well; I suppose he's on his way to Ipswich." He looked like he'd lost a pound and found a penny...
I also remember receiving a letter from Mr. Ayre (I think all S.T. holders got one) outlining the reasons for the sale (my own view was a version of a game called asset stripping.) Incidentally I agree with the view expressed above that the club still haven't recovered completely from the actions of that day, that was our only reasonable chance since 1972 of getting into the first division. I live in hope....but it appears to be a factor of about ten times harder now than it was even in the first year of the century..

It was Ruberry and Pubic Ayre who were the villans of piece not Bruce. Although he didn't do himself any favours with signing of Chris Hay as, I use the term loosely, a replacement for Stewart. Bruce wasn't responsible for the sale of Stewart but I will say he didn't cover himself in glory the following season after missing out on the play offs but he was not responsible for the financial meltdown nor the relegation that followed, we should have stayed up that year we cocked up so many chances to get results, the missed penalty at the Reebok to make it 3-1 springs to mind, that alone would gave kept us up.

Steve Bruce is clearly a good manager now. But at the time, he left us in a right mess. He got us relegated.

Martin Smith could have been an excellent player at the same level Stewart was, but injuries prevented that.
I find the idea that ANY manager would choose to sell their main goalscorer a bit unlikely to say the least. IMO it was a decision made higher up the club ( Rubery trying to recoup some of his outlay) and Bruce was given the task of replacing Stewart with a little over a tenth of the money we'd get for him. In those circumstances Smith was a superb signing. ( or would have been but for his injuries).
My opinion is that bruce put together the best side Ive seen play for us but then had the rug pulled from under him when Rubery did a sudden 180' about turn in his ambitions for the club. Wasn't just him that felt massively let down, but the players did too ( such as Monkou, Gorre ) . Think Rubery felt let down but the lack of support he got from the fans in terms of number ( we were top of the championship and getting 11 or 12000 most games)
But in bruces case joined us with the promise of a certain amount of backing and had left a good job at a bigger club ( Sheff Utd) and turned down a good job at another bigger club ( Notts Forest) to come here. He's gone on to prove time and again what a terrific manager he is. If Rubery had kept his focus, bruce would have made us into a, established( ish) Prem side like he has at Hull IMO.

I would agree that Bruce had us playing good football but it was only for a short period of time - 2 months at the most. People have short memories - long before he left the football we were playing was not only uninspiring, it was unsuccessful. We were plummeting down the table before the Stewart fiasco - like lots of teams our strengths had been sussed out and the opposition were catering for us quite comfortably. I think people remember the very exciting football we played - for a short while - and forget the dull stuff we played under him. Personally I could never forgive his deserting us in the middle of the season to go and watch his Manchester United on a different continent - it told us, the players, the media everything about his approach to Huddersfield Town, as did his appalling stewardship when he was no longer allowed to bring players in left right and centre. You may remember how much he spent on bringing lots of players in. Couple that with what I heard he, and his mates, were getting paid here (didn't he also make himself a paid director?) and in my opinion he, and his legacy, almost literally destroyed the club - administration etc. We were well rid, but the damage had been done.

Sure it was more than 2 months. remember stuffing palace 7-1 very early on in the season and also a game against charlton around Xmas where Im pretty sure that if we'd won we'd have started the new decade top of the division. Thats 4 months at least. It was only really in January that we started to drop down a bit, but don't think we dropped out of the play off spots until very late in the season.

I don't think we dropped out of the play off places till the last game ? I'm sure we played bolton and were. 8 points up on them with three to play. And they got into play offs .. And I think went up ? Some statto ll know .. And yes the fixture vs Charlton was in December ( week before xmas ? ) and they gave us a bit of a lesson

Some statto ll know Or anybody who hasn't supressed the memories of Marcus Stewart firing Ipswich to promotion in the play-offs against Bolton and Barnsley that season But yeah, beat leaders Charlton leaving us with a fairly simple 4 game run-in to cement our play-off spot. We had 2 home games left vs Bolton and Stockport. We'd only lost 2 home games all season up to that point then lost both those. Went to Fulham on last day needing a win to guarantee keeping our play-off spot and started with one up front and a bench full of strikers. Lost. FFS. Technically, it was Wolves who took the last play-off spot from us on goal difference. Bolton had gone on a good run to get in there before losing to Ipswich 7-5 on aggregate in the semis. The 2 teams who nipped ahead of us at the death (Bolton/Wolves) played each other in the penultimate game. About the only result which could knack things up for Town was a narrow Bolton win, anything else would've left us sitting pretty. Bolton won 2-1. Hope that's statto enough

It all started going wrong after the Liverpool game near start of December, 4 or 5 weeks before we sold Stewie
Wasnt overly bothered when we dropped out of play offs on last game of season as there was no way we would've gone up through them
