I much prefer Smith tbh but I do think Smith was better when he played centre back

I think Peltier was picked ahead of Smith because Birmingham had a very nippy young winger (forgotten his name) and because with Hudson and Gerrard playing together in the middle we needed more pace on the cover than Smith offers. Peltier did very well against the kid - I don't remember him really getting beat. Contrast that with Smith at Derby when he really struggled to cope with their speedy Liverpool loanee winger and we were one down in five minutes as a result. The downside is that Peltier is less good than Smith going forward, and when he went forward in support there wasn't much conviction to it. But you could have said that about anyone on Saturday. Overall I thought he defended well and certainly was one of our better players. If anyone abused the lad, they are the disgrace, not him. We should be supporting our players, particularly if they have been out of the team for a long time, come in and done reasonably well. And whilst Peltier may be "less good" going forward, what does Smith's forward play actually result in? Not much.

Peltier looks like a lad whose confidence has been slowly drained out of him (since Leicester got rid, maybe). Powell needs to earn his money with regards to Pelts now, especially as he was a full-back himself. There's still a good player in there somewhere.

Smith is top of this season's assists table. Not bad for a right/centre back.
As many as Robinson and Dixon combined.

He has four or five which is probably more than Peltier will have in his career.

I like and rate smith as a right sided centre back in a 3, but not as a full back.

Ideally I would prefer a Jack Hunt type wing back that isn't afraid to attack and can offer a bit of pace, width and a different dimension to the team. This is something we lack from our current defenders.

Players like hunt are great on the eye, but give me a Steve Jenkins type any day.....solid, dependable and a regular 6.5/7 out of 10.

Instead he prefers a rigid system with effectively 3 banks of players. Not many teams nowadays deploy deploy the latter and there is a reason for that. We're always going to be lacklustre going forwards when Powell selects solid players that roam no further than 10 yards from their position.

It also nullifies Scannell's threat to some degree as there is no overlapping runs from RB that force 1 of the opposition to cover. Scans is normally double or even triple marked as soon as he gets the ball so anything that means fewer defenders to beat will make him more dangerous. FWIW I thought Pelts did a good job defensively against Grey who scored a hat trick the week before and looked IMO their liveliest player up front. I'd forgotten just how bad he is with the ball though, absolutely woeful.

When your midfield is 30 yds behind you and your full backs don't join in either it isolates the front men as we saw on Saturday. Pelts played his first game at right back on sat.....and looked a little rusty early on. Not as good as smith with the ball I agree, but defensively far superior in particular his one on one defending where smith has been poor all season IMO.

I've no doubt that Powell's instructions made a difference on Saturday-everyone must have had instructions not to commit forwards and remain a solid bank of 4-5-1 in front of Smithies. With better finishing/luck it might have paid off but it won't have set anyone's hearts racing with excitement.

I can see some incoming transfers happening soon.. No doubt well have those clubs pants down too!

I would prefer we benefit on the pitch with the incoming players even if we don't get a bargain. The offloading of Stead, Paterson, Ward, Peltier and Hammill (on loan) should give us significant wiggle room on wages and fees to start adding bigger pieces to CP's plans whilst supplementing the first team squad with youngsters from the development squad who need to be able to produce in bitparts for us.

Not to mention the departure of Holt. I hope we don't think we're already safe. I appreciate that it's an inflated market in January but we do look very light now attack wise.

I liked pelts in L1 but not convinced he's up to champ standard..Powell will know his fullbacks and he's being kept out of the side by a 22y/o dev squad player... if we could get money for him, providing we have a replacement (ideally better than smith) lined up, i would be more than happy.
not sure cardiff will be a great move for him mind, think he needs to drop down to a top L1 side...but under slade you never know

Many return signings go bad. This one was terrible, I groan when he comes off the bench, no matter where Powell decides to give him a few minutes. I must have had rise tinted specs in his first stint, because he's been gash in his second IMO.
