The question is , Gobern to start next week or Hogg? Hogg. Tell Gobern he did a good job Saturday and if he keeps it up his time will come.

How can he keep it up if he's not in the team?
If a player in that rôle comes on as a sub, its either because something has gone tits up or its a cameo.

You never know. I doubt our 3 first choice midfielders will stay injury free all season. Tell him to keep up his performance levels in training and whenever he's called upon and his chance will come.
Have a cracking day mate.

Aye, that's true enough - I'd probably keep him in for next week, but I can see both sides of the coin. Might be indicative of how Powell rates him overall (but then could be just as indicative of that for Hogg).
Cheers, have a good one yourself.

I think you have to start Hogg against Boro, set him against Clayton like a rottweiler on a postman. We all know what he can do if you let him sit back and spray the ball, so we need to get up in his face from the getgo - for this you really need Hogg

I think that you are in a minority and most people agree on here that he had a good game. Drop him now and you might as well ship him out - he'll be lost for ever. Powell has to get the best out of every player including squad players. They play well and you keep them in. I can see your point but Hogg doesn't deserve to be left out after his performances prior to the harsh second yellow that led to his suspension today. Hogg to replace a far from poor Gobern for me. Agreed. It would be harsh to drop either Gobern or Hogg based on recent performances, but the fact of the matter is Hogg has been arguably our play of the season so far. I would understand Powell keeping Gobern in, but I suspect he'll pick Hogg - particularly in a tough away game. As far as Gobern goes I thought he played his part in a good team performance and showed why successive Town managers have kept him on the books - he shows promise and does some good things, but he also does some strange things and probably isn't consistent enough to be in the first team every week.

Not a Gobern fan but thought he was decent enough on Saturday.
He looks alot better when the team as a whole are playing well, and when we're on top.
Keeps it ticking over nicely at times.
He struggles though when we're up against it, and he then looks too lightweight and immobile for that defensive/holding role.
But hopefully, if he's given a run of games, he can improve and put in a run of consistent performances which he has yet to produce for us, in his three years here.

Boro are a good team and will probably have the large bulk of possession on their bigger than average pitch. Hogg is regarded as being the fittest player at the club with tremendous stamina, whereas Gobern is undoubtably at the other end of our stamina scale. That alone says to me its a bit of a no brainer, never mind that Hoggs been one of our best players all season, compared to Gobern's one decent game.

Just goes to show with the mixed views how hard a managers job is.

He's oozing class out there today. His all round game has definitely improved. He keeps possesion well but has been creative too. He is an enigma. Certainly good enough for the proverbial 'run in the team'. Seems odd to let him go when he's never had even 5 consecutive starts for us. He looks very comfortable at this level.

Is it a mistake to let this lad go without giving him a fair run in the team ?

Playing for a contract? Do we give him an extension?
I honestly think he has never been given a real opportunity, but perhaps it's to do with his efforts in training, or his face just doesn't fit.

Good game from him today. Tired like the majority of the team 2nd half which isn't exactly surprising given his lack of football.

If he could play like that every week then it would be like having a new player, even played the ball forward today, looking for the killer pass. Would you drop Hogg for him though?

To be honest, he always plays like that. Simple 10 yard defence splitting passes are his forte. Trouble is, the often go unnoticed whereas if he slips of his long gangly legs he gets castigated for it for days. He's not a bad player.
