The priority is shoring up at the back. As others have said, a top drawer centre back for our level is a must. Would like a full back who can play either side, like Joel ward, but he's both literally and metaphorically out of our league.
We need a back up to Butterfield, hopefully this could be Duane Holmes if he pushes on. Would ideally like someone better than Miller as back up but I think he could be a good asset with a good pre-season.

Bear in mind Johnson played in the Prem less recently than Hudson and has been pretty poor against us in the Champ away from last Sat. Also, if we get a player at the back end of his career, they're likely lacking mobility, which is what is killing us at the back. It's not easy is it Johnson I would class as an ex prem level defender. Hudson was a top end championship defender who had one season in a promoted team. He was actually dropped for Steven caulker. Agree a player like Johnson or Distin could be losing their pace/mobility but if they played the majority of their football at prem level they will in all likelyhood have been much much quicker in the first place. Richard Dunne from QPR would be another or the sort I'd be aiming for. 5 years ago I'd have never believed we'd have had Vaughan and Beckford up front but we did. I'm all for realism but was have to at least aim high. The other way to go is a young up & comer like Keane from Utd/Burnley but they're in short supply, are unproven, and only for one season.

I've said it before, if Edgar and Miller are examples of Powell's signings (even if they can be got rid of at the end of the season) it doesn't bode well. I don't think we can judge Powell on these two in all fairness, I'm hoping it is more a case of they're available and cheap temporary options thus making more funds available for him to put his stamp on the side come summer, I bloody hope so anyway

I don't think we can co plain too much about a strike force including a £2m striker, the premierships youngest ever goal scorer and a unit with some prem experience. Keep developing the midfield with Hogg, Butterfield and Coady may even start seeing Billing or Tronstad making a name for themselves. We have a threatening championship winger in Scannell, possible could have another although Bunn a work horse and Lolley still developing. I think Tommy Smith can come into his own nest season and be a consist and RB, could do with somehow keeping Robinson if not we need a replacement. Smithies a solid GK with a new contract.
I'd prefer us to concentrate any investment we can offer into one good CB rather than spread across a number of players that don't really improve the team. Plus possibly require a LB if Robinson doesn't come back. Would also help keep the consistency.

Quality CB, midfield general who can create and link up play and quality striker. Finding them, and at the right price, is obviously the biggest challenge!

Wonder how many fans on this forum had the privilege of witnessing" proper leadership skills " from the amazing Jimmy Nicholson or Trevor Cherry.

Seeing as he was playing for us just over 40 years ago I would reckon the answer would be " shitloads"

you are working on the theory of Wells, Hogg, Scannell,Smith and Butterfield etc being here..
add to that Lynch's ability to miss a good number of games and the possibility of Vaughan not being available every week..
lets see who stays and the fallout from that before starting to add 'quality' to the squad..
If harry bunn puts in a few more motm peformances we might be looking to replace him...
Its difficult to put a team together when its clear that offers will be seriously considered, wether we have a replacement lined up or not..

Seems pretty obvious what we need.
Robinson goes back so we need to replace him.
Edgar goes back so we need a new right back/utility player.
Gerrard goes. We need to replace him with someone who will go into our first 11.
Gobern goes. Someone needs to come in who will push coady and Hogg for a place in the team. Needs to be able to break up play and keep it simple.
Miller. Who knows. If he finds his feet then we may sign him. If not, we need a similar player. Not sure if we will get anyone better though. He is big, strong and quick and can hold the ball up. His finishing doesn't look terrible either. If he could finish like wells and dribble like scannel then he would be in the premiership, we can't expect our players to have it all.

A first choice centre back. A third choice striker. Replacement for Robinson Cover for Hogg. Agree, and hope Robinson can stay, but in addition: A right back to challenge for the position with Smith A left winger who's LEFT FOOTED! Whittingham from Cardiff? Gudmundsson from Charlton? The latter can take free kicks, as we discovered on Saturday. (As I have commented on another thread, I've lost faith in the right-footed Bunn, at least in that position.)
