Not that many games ago we beat Watford 3-1...
Even more recently we held the team that was previously on the top of their game 1-1 at their place...
Or do recently retrospective games not count?

I doubt we ever will. We just do not have the fan base, nor the capital.

At this rate, we'll all be dead!!! Now take a look back at our finishing positions over the past few years. See a trend there? That is the 'rate' you are referring to I presume? Are you expecting some kind of end of world apocalypse in the next 2 or 3 years?

To be honest I wouldn't be too bothered if we didn't gain promotion to the PL, not that I believe the format will still be with us in a decade or so. I'm sure they'll be a European super league or whatever.
Even if the format remains I would be happy if we become an established Championship club, in our good seasons we flirt with or attain the a playoff place and our poorer seasons mean we stave off relegation.
I didn't start watching Town with an expectation of playing in the top league, if it happens I will damn well enjoy it, but won't sulk or cry if it never materialises and to be honest the last thing I would want to have a brief stay in the top flight followed by a Bradford or Portsmouth fall from grace.

I remember I think it was '99/2000 when we were top of the Championship 2 or 3 weeks running and cutting the league table out of the newspaper and sticking them on the kitchen wall.

I'd be amazed if a European league materialises - the PL delivers vast income for the clubs, particularly those at the top - finishing 20th under the new deal is worth three times as much as winning the Champions League. They'd be mad to drop it for a concept that might not work. It would destroy UEFA's CL tournament too so would need to be a breakaway operation, all very risky with little incentive. The PL clubs will be able to lord it over the rest of Europe when the new money comes in. Such a league would be great for clubs like Benfica or Ajax or Celtic; big clubs in small leagues. What's it got to offer English clubs? Zilch.

wolves were 5th- didn't they go down that season!? That was the first thing I saw too. Always remember the season that Millwall were walking the league before Christmas, then didn't win another game and ended up going down - it was in the 90s when we were previously in the 2nd tier
