I don't know what any of you think about Smithies but in my opinion he has to go. I have never really rated Smithies in any of the divisions we have played in and certainly not this one, him along with a few others are a liability for us, I think we have a perfectly good keeper in Joe Murphy and I don't see why he doesn't get a chance after Saturdays performance by Smithies and last nights according to a few. I just dont think he is good enough What are your thoughts?

Are you on drugs? If it wasn't for Alex we'd have probably conceded over 100 goals this season with the amount of mistakes captain calamity and Wallace have made!

Mate of mine who was sat in Bournemouth end as a neutral, as he now lives down there, said Smithies was one of best goalies he's seen this season at Dean Court.
Opinions do differ

Distribution still shite, easy clearance in the early stages yesterday straight through to their 'keeper which launched the attack for their opening goal. Two or three blinding saves after that to keep us in in first half while Edgar and Wallace twatted about in front of him.

He isn't bad a pulling out a blinding save from time to time but his distibution along with other things is woeful.

The guy has saved us countless times and at our level is a decent keeper who I feel will improve. If you want to look at who should go then look no further than all of the defence apart from Lynch and Robinson who is on loan.

Perfectly good keeper in Murphy? The same Murphy who was lucky not to concede v sheff weds due to shit communication and being unable to decide whether to come off his line or not? The same Murphy who some argued was at fault for both goals v Leeds for similar reasons? Him over Smithies? Really? I'd never put him in ahead of Smithies unless Smithies couldn't play.

Spot on that... but I think too much is made of GK's 'distribution' on boards like this.

Distribution is - to a point - dependant on what's around you. If you think by passing it to a defender, he'll lose it, you're more likely to go long just to get the ball further from goal.

Doesn't really show much that. Teams that either pass it out from the back or have a huge target man are going to rank highly. We do/have neither.

This is kind of why you can't put too much focus on those stats on Squawka. For how many of those games is he being asked to smash it 60m in the direction of Nahki Wells who's not going to win anything? Robins last season had Smithies spreading play like a sweeper at points, of which he was excellent at. The opening post is an absolute embarrassment if it's not an attempted windup. We've conceded 7 over the last few games, had it not been for Smithies it could have been 15.

I don't think Smithies stands much of a chance when having to rely on such a below championship standard " poor quality " defenders which not many fans have confidence in. Towns woeful defensive record speaks for itself , and would have been far worse had it not been for some of the world class outstanding saves made by Smithies in most games. The one thing that does need sorting out is the total lack of communication between all of the defence ,and for Powell to bring in a player/captain with proper leadership and organisation skills.

Where do they get their performance ratings from on that site? It has Smithies as the 23rd best keeper in the league and he has a negative score!! It also rated Butterfield as the 9th best player in the division. Other Town / ex Town in the top 50 include Richard Keogh 14th, Ollie Norwood 15th, Sean Morrison 24th, Jordan Rhodes 36th and Connor Coady 46th.

if we had a defence that didn't have the turning circle of a crude oil tanker he would be fine. I've criticised him myself in the past but you can hardly blame the lad at the moment when not one of the other players looks like they're arsed.

I stick up for Smithies on a fairly regular basis, he's an excellent keeper who is only going to continue to improve, but his weakest area, by far is his distribution. Throw outs are fairly impressive, kicking leaves a lot to be desired at times. One of this season's top performers for me all in all though.
