One of my first heroes at Town. Really saddened by this news.

Wish we had one like him now. Wonderful memories. If Hogg grew his hair and did a bit more clogging he wouldn't be far away (although Jimmy was a bit more skilful than given credit for). A great loss from a great team.

Great character, and the backbone of the team which gave me my fondest memories in football. Thanks, Jimmy, and farewell. When you go in front of Peter, though, best stay on your feet :-)

Arterrier PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't spoil this thread by turning it into to yet another chance to have a dig at the club. His memory doesn't deserve that

I'm not, just that he played 184 times for the club and played in our last top flight season, just think it strange that the club haven't put anything in the official site for such a big player from the clubs history.

No doubt they will, meantime they have put condolences on the official twitter page. Lay off mate.

I felt it a privilege to have witnessed Jimmy play alongside some of Towns top quality players in the 70s ,and players we could only dream of having in the team today . Jimmy was an old school player as if he didn't come in blood soacked, battered and knackered after the final whistle had blown , then he was the type of player that maybe felt he hadn't been in a game. The players i remember from that era still roll off my tongue today - Terry Poole , Dennis Clarke , Geoff Hutt , Jimmy Nicholson, Roy Ellam , Trevor Cherry , Dicky Kryswicki , Jimmy Lawson , Steve Smith, Les Chapman Jimmy Mc Gill , Colin Dobson . Great Days and Jimmy will be always remembered and sadly missed by all who remember him. . R I P .

The first chant I ever remembered was McGill, McGill,McGill, McGill, McGill to the tune of the 7 dwarves from Snow White, heigh ho. I was a regular back in them days, best footballing days of HTFC. Chopper was a legend. I still remember his winning goal against Ipswich like it was yesterday. RIP town legend.

One of my favourites from that era, very sad to here of his death, I still never figured out how he and Frankie managed to get into the Pack Horse mews before me and my mates after a home game.....
Wonderful memories from a great time to be a Town fan...

Very sad to read about the passing of a Town legend who was (apparently) the same age as I am.... Ask not; "For Whom the Bell Tolls"
I doubt he would last more than about quarter of an hour in a game now though, ball-winning tackles were the main stay of his game and, just occasionally, he could be a little late...

McGill had a bad start with Town, responsible for Pompey taking the lead in 5 minutes but, typical of the guy, he shook it off, manned up and became an absolute star for Town. He brought much needed bite to midfield and complemented the marvellous Jimmy Nicholson and Colin Dobson perfectly. When Town signed him from Arsenal there was a bit of confusion in the press at the time (which was the only media apart from TV/radio available), because Arsenal also had another player called James Magill who was a bit more experienced than Chopper, and it was thought that Town had got him!
RIP Chopper, old lad. Great memories.

Saw him throughout his career at Town. Always a fans favourite. One of those players of relatively slight build but very tough on the field. A key player at the time for me. RIP Chopper UTT

A goal which had never seemed likely came when an Ipswich back pass brought a disputed corner. The corner was a short one. Jones momentarily tripped as he tried to collect it, but picked himself up and slotted the ball into the centre, where Ellam helped it on for McGill to apply the finish with a shot which Sivell had no chance to stop". If I close my eyes I'm convinced I can picture it now!

Was just talking about him 2 days ago with my Dad. We were talking about this match.. R.I.P. Chopper. Great piece of footage that. I was at the game with my Dad and forty one thousand others. Best, Law & Charlton all scoring in the same game against us. Quite an honour really even though we lost. RIP Chopper. You'll never be forgotten!

Jimmy McGill----absolute legend from a golden era & my favourite football times by a million miles. I recall that 0-3 match too although crowd wasn't 41,000 as per earlier poster .That was previous season when we lost 1-2 in torrential rain ---Frankie scoring pen at Cowshed end....Denis Law at open end and dunno who scored Man u other goal. I also remember Ipswich last minute winner at Cowshed end.....I was in open end with my late Dad and seem to recall Ipswich goalie flunking it into top corner. Nobody has ever played at top level , more than holding their own, without being some player. Jimmy galvanised that fantastic 69/70 team enabling Jimmy Nich (who wasn't exactly a shrinking violet in the tackle either!!!) , big Frank, Jimmy Lawson etc to weave their magic. Great days & great Town player. RIP Jimmy McGill....we loved you. UTT

All time favourite of mine, the guy would run through a brick wall for town , get up and shake the dust of, what a midfielder we had then, played for one of the best town teams I have seen, a joy to watch. R.I.P Chopper, your memory will live forever in the blue and white stripes.

If I close my eyes I'm convinced I can picture it now! Laurie Sivell, the shortest top level keeper I ever saw, believe it or not 5'8"! Played the German keeper in Escape to Victory opposite short arsed Sylvester Stallone, at 5'7"! You thought Phil Senior was short?
