Imagine playing Paul Scholes at left midfield.... Only England of course. and Lampard England - victims of trying to shoehorn the 11 best players into a 442.. Shame Hoddle took leave of his senses in 99, because had he not I think he'd have been in it for the long haul - the most modern thinking and tactically astute manager we've had for a long time. He'd have played Carrick in the holding role and pushed Gerrard and Scholes further forward. For once, I totally agree with you. Paul Scholes was totally wasted for England, if he had of been Spanish he'd have been a fucking legend.

.... bloody hell Slaps, not again. We're crap compared with other country's teams, and we will continue to be so. and what do you think at full time? Were we crap 2nd half once we had something resembling a decent side out there ( ie Smalling off and Jones not in midfield instead of carrick) I didn't watch it, 'cos I couldn't be bothered to stream it. Watched the Israel Belgium game instead. I didn't even bother last Friday either and I used to watch every England game with a passion 10 years ago, even used to take my son out of school. Wake me up when we're up to Costa Rica standard in real competitive games.

Got in the ground and never saw a ball kicked! Englands flight home cancelled and they are all heading back to my hotel, staff are being called from home...chaos. Is the weather bad in the UK or something?

Imagine the Italy team, and maybe even the England team, 5-10 years ago to now. Nowhere near the same level

Is the weather bad in the UK or something? Wouldn't be surprised, my missus's flight was very nearly diverted from Cork last night.

I'll always watch and support them because Im english and they're my team, whether they're good, bad or indifferent. Same as with Town. You missed a good performance last friday against a weak side, and a good performance 2nd half tonight against a decent one.

Portugal losing 2-0 to Cape Verde They are ranked above Scotland in the Fifa rankings. Not that big a shock.

I just seem to have better things to do. I've been finding that I forget that they're actually playing recently, which is amazing given my passion not so many years back, when I went to France in '98 to support them, for example. I was going to watch it just to see how Harry Kane played but it wasn't on TV here so I couldn't be arsed to find a stream and the Israel Belgium game that was on my TV was pretty good.

Just to reiterate what other people are saying, we have wasted ten years or so of Michael Carrick by trying to shoehorn others into the side. One of my all time favourite Prem players, I remember I used to watch both West Ham and Spurs games on tv just to see him play, love the way he plays the game.

Is the weather bad in the UK or something? It's a bit wild out but that's in Huddrrsfield would have thought the team would be flying back into heathrow. Not sure what it's like down south.

Agree about Carrick. Goes down with names like Scholes, Le Tissier, Hoddle as genuine quality players england have never got the value from.

He could have played Delph there because he never takes a man on and generally does bugger all out on the left. Don't think Delph is defensive minded enough to play that screener role. He's more suited to 'adding legs' than anything else. I wasn't serious about him playing there, just anything to get him away from left midfield. What a difference Townsend made when he came of for him.

Kane was alright Phil. Set up Rooney in first half, had a shot himself and kept possession well. Didn't look out of place at this level. Good at defensive set-pieces too.

Salvatore..the amazing Sicilian manager somehow got 25 staff to come back to work at 11pm...imagine that in England! Not one had deigned to come for a pint at the bar...pussies.

Wouldn't have been a problem in England - it's about 15 years since anyone English has worked in the hotel industry in this country.

As Hoddle said last night Hodgson bringing on Carrick, Barkley and Townsend changed the game. Instead of playing the possesion game and getting nowhere we took the game to the Italians. Espically Barkley he's got something's he needs to work on (awareness, tracking back) but there's a real talent in that lad.

I also noticed that, but he's still learning and I hope he'll be a great player. Pivotal to the midfield all of a sudden is Carrick - I'd always start with him. For an average footballer, Danny Mills always has plenty to say on 5 Live, usually negative!

He nearly always dribbles when he should pass or shoot and vice versa. A great natural talent but a long way to go yet.

Thought we played well second half, especially when Barkley and Townsend started running at the Italians.

Was a bit breezy, but not so bad. I didn't watch the game, but how did Matteo Darmian do? He looked to have been lined up at wing-back again, and he's been improving this season (his goal at Athletic illustrative of that) but it'd be nice to get a Toro back in the Azzurri side, after Immobile (who has been woeful since leaving) left.

I didn't watch it, one look at the line ups and it was almost a "B" International. What can you really learn from that? Trying out players like Clyne, Delph, Jones in midfield, Kane and Gibbs is fair enough I just don't know how much you can learn by playing another sides second string. Our players could look good in this game then next time we play Italy they have DeRossi, Marchisio, Verratti starting, Candreva and 2 strikers that have more than 5 caps between them and we don't look as good and we wonder why. The only thing I think you could learn is if someone isn't up to it at the level last night then there's not much chance when the proper games come round. To be honest I think we're a victim of getting piss easy qualifying groups everytime because it gives us nothing too competitive for 2 years until we get to the finals.

England looked a bit like Town on a bad day under Robins in the first half. Once they got Carrick on (and then Townsend and Barkley on - and Walcott and Delph off) and upped the tempo we looked a decent team. hope Roy learned a lot from that - you would think he should know already though.

Kyle Walker, another one that really shouldn't be anywhere near an England squad This is coming from the guy who thinks Welbeck should be nowhere near the squad.. Hilarious!
