I'm currently holidaying in Italy. Sorrento. Been here since Sunday but fly back Friday night ready for Bolton. The country is unbelievable in every aspect. I just hope that Cellini continues in his true-to-type Italian attitude of 'don't give a toss' because that's what they're all like here. You should see their cars! Bloody brilliant! Drive down the Amalfi coast to Positano etc. It's a road you'll NEVER forget, absolutely stunning. But just be careful if at the wheel, its really difficult to concentrate on where you're going because everything around is just so mind blowingly awesome!!

Not driving. I've got more bloody sense. I've seen the way the Italians drive their cars and Vespas. Everybody on their mobiles and arguing with their partners! Madness!

We've been everywhere here, Tez. Bloody marvellous. Venice, Garda, Verona, Naples, Florence, Pisa, Sorrento and I've been to Rome more times than I've been to that there London! Can be expensive, but possibly no more than we paid for the likes of Vienna or Barcelona. Visits can be costly; 70 euros for hydrofoil to Capri and back this week!! Food is brill and I wouldn't class it as expensive. Some might. Italian beer I love - Peroni and Moretti - which is surprisingly expensive in bars and restaurants but ridiculously cheap in supermarkets. The missus always organises trip flights and hotels on-line; she's a whizz at 4-star hotels for cheap prices coupled with bargain flights. Can't recommend the place highly enough. Beats the shit out of Spain and Greece every time! Agree with most of that but have to say Greece and its islands also are fabulous.Spain no thanks .

I suppose you're right, Sandy. Should have added a caveat: Other opinions are, of course, available.

Tez, you'll love it mate. But to be honest, now that we're both retired it's great for us to go when we want. I know it's tougher for families who might take kids out of school, because I know it's expensive in school hols time. Believe me, we were both teachers, so now it's great to go in term-time and right royally piss off ex-colleagues who are still hard at it, with photos of me with beer and pizza in 34 degrees at Herculaneum (today's little train ride)!! Roger this retirement lark is just wonderful thoroughly recommend it

did the Amalfi a couple of months ago. Found a peach of a hotel if you're interested. Absolutely! The Admiral in the Marina Grande, Sorrento. Book a sea facing balcony and you're looking straight out across the bay over to Vesuvius. The hotel is in an old fishing village which is packed with good fish restaurants. There is even a beach and you can get boats out to Capri. Sorrento is only a ten minute walk where there is the train station for Pompeii and Herculanium and the bus station for the Amalfi coast road.

I've worked a few months in Rome and Milan and you soon get the hang of it. The principle is, "dont hit what's in front of you and leave worrying about whats at the side and behind you to someone else"!

I nearly booked that hotel but founf the CESARE AUGUSTO right in town ctre near to the railyway station a brilliant choice. Great views from the rooftop pool, only 2 minutes on foot from the main piazza and the food in the hotel and service was something else. It looks like its stuck in a time warp from the 60's and from the photos of all the hollywood stars of stage and film who have stayed there, displayed in the lounge it all fits lol, but can highly recommend it for location, food and roomy elegant bedrooms.

That hotel looks absolutely lovely , how do you get into town though, I would hope you would not need grappling hooks to scale the cliff (Where eagles dare style).

Staggered! Never seen so many lemons actually growing, but never been this far south before. Go on the bus & sit near the front. Scary but an absolutely fantastic journey. I did the bus journey too. Waited a long while at the bus station in Sorrento but worth it. Sat on the right hand side towards Positano , scared me shitless. I actually could not look out of the window at some points. Beautiful place. Capri a nightmare . Never again. €40 for 4 bottles of beer and a fight to get up the cliffs in the railcar. The Amalfi is place I will certainly revisit , whilst not getting drawn into the Gracie Fields hype of Capri !

Didn't he get a 2-year stretch, so with good behaviour he could be out by 2019. He apparently COULD be out by November due to time served whilst awaiting charge. Theres also an appeal going through. I suspect when he eventually gets his freedom some interesting stories will find their way into the Yorkshire Post!

I thought he was still locked up awaiting trial and basically left to rot?

Yes, found guilty of "breach of trust"...which I think in English terms means using his position to steal money, or embezzlement. The claim was of trousering £3m+ off the back of false invoices etc. He's appealling, so would be interesting to see on what grounds. He might claim he was duped into part of a collective false accounting scheme I suppose. I don't think he was ordered to repay anything, so there could be doubt over whether he directly got the material gain. Although that wouldn't be an appeal of innocence, it would be an admission of guilt and that there are other parties to serve justice on...unless negligence without intent is a defence.

And, by the way, my lad works in Dubai and has done for nigh on 18 months now. Loves it and moaned like hell when he came back for a week last Christmas.
