When Wells struck his effort, one of their defenders had slid off the back of the pitch. I am not completely certain on the rule but surely the defender would be playing everybody onside regardless as to whether or not he was on the pitch? Personally thought it was an appalling decision which summed up the performance of the assistants in general!

Players aren't supposed to leave the field without the ref's say so and whilst he may have accidentally slipped off, technically he's still in play. That used to be the rule when I played the game anyway.

Yep plenty of us saying same thing, surely they are still considered in play even if they have slid off the pitch?
Happy to be pointed out as wrong but if we're right that was an absolutely dreadful decision.

According to FIFA
If a defending player steps behind his own goal line in order to place an opponent in an offside position, the referee shall allow play to continue and caution the defender for deliberately leaving the field of play without the refereeās permission when the ball is next out of play.
PS. I'm not commenting myself as I couldn't tell what was going on from where I sat.

The rule states that when play continues the player becomes the last defender. If he left the field before the phase that led to the goal then he would be deemed as not playing Wells onside.

Will this be discussed on the FLS? Are we still the featured game?

What about the throw-in that led to their 4th as well? Linesman gave it to us with his good view, referee had no idea at all, gets shouted at by the wolly in a brolly and overrules his linesman and gives them the throw-in! 25 seconds later they scored. Pathetic and weak refereeing.

My only thought could be that wells was behind their keeper when the ball was played so was in between the player off the pitch and the keeper, making him offside? Can't imagine the official could get it so ridiculously wrong otherwise

Clear goal, could see he was onside from the other side of the stadium.
Ref was shite all afternoon and two of their second half goals came directly from bad decisions, shocking.

Thought we'd got away with one when I saw Darren Deadman was only the fourth official and wasn't reffing. Little did I know his mate could be even worse. Even as a fourth official he was awful, McClaren kept wandering onto the actual pitch and he just stood there laughing with him, making zero attempt to get him back in his technical area.
Howler of an afternoon from all 4 officials, a real shame because it was a great spectacle of football on display.

He reffed us at Forest last week, his sixth win in ten Town matches in the middle. Only once has he done us over. I think he was also blameless as fourth official when we beat Brentford earlier this season. He may well deserve the reputation he appears to have, but not really when reffing Town matches. If we had him every match next season and he kept up his current record, we'd get 92 points.

Diabolical! That Assistant flagging Wells offside for a perfectly good 4th goal. The interpretations of law 11 state clearly that if a defender ACCIDENTALLY goes out of play behind the goal line then he is deemed to be ON THE GOAL LINE. That incident was clearly such a case the defender went for the tackle and slid off the field of play - a perfectly legal move - but he should be deemed to be ON THE GOAL line and therefore playing Wells on side. Wells was certainly further upfield than their keeper so there were TWO defenders closer to the goal than he was.

Never get why so many people get so aggitated over a manager stepping outside of his technical area. What difference does it make? It's not like he's winning headers and tackling our players. Mclaren was about 20 cm out at one point and about 20 people around me are shouting down really angrily "get him in his box", "boooooo, get him told", "this isn't on, what a disgrace, get him back!" Bla bla bla. Really? And Deadman didn't make zero effort, he clearly joked with him and just said something like "come on mate, step back a bit". What do you want him to do? Pick him up and smack him about a bit so he doesn't do it again?

Got to admit saw him at one point stood slap bang in the middle of our technical area, seemed a bit of a liberty.

Its why pantomime is the most popular form of theatre, and part of what makes football a great spectator sport.

Anybody got highlights of the incident? I have only seen the allowed goals. It's on here but you can't see where their player is when the ball comes to Nahki, you just see him slide off the pitch with Scannell in the build-up. www1.skysports.com/football/live/match/314289/report
