Greedy little bar steward. His contract runs until 2017; if I was Brendan Rodgers I'd stick him in the Stiffs for the rest of his Liverpool career and refuse to sell him. Let's see how much plays - and earns - doing that! www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/32830357In fact - How is this any different in principle to Adam Clayton, he made it clear that he wouldn't extend his contract for us for less than 20K a week, which we were never going to do, so in our case we chose to sell with 12 months left on his contract. He got his 20k a week payday and we got a handsome transfer fee. The numbers are much higher but then so is the talent level. If anything it is Liverpool that are struggling to adapt to the fact there there is a level above them, that some players may choose to leave them for. Champions league football is a level where the better players want to play at. Agree. The table shows Liverpool to be comparable in standard to Spurs and Southampton. Would fans be blaming a Southampton player for being greedy if he whored himself out to Real Madrid? Not a chance, it would just be seen as career progression. Think this is combined with the media trying to fit footballers into certain stereotypes. James Milner is perceived as a boring, grafter so he's not going to sell papers and him rejecting a bigger offer from a more competitive club therefore goes under the radar. Raheem Sterling is a young lad who can be shoved into the stereotype of being a greedy, daft footballer. He hasn't gone about it in the best manner, but I fail to see what he's really done wrong.

I don't see a problem here, Sterling clearly wants to leave Liverpool, however, he is contracted to them until 2017. He has every right to refuse to sign an extension to his contract. But the club has every right not to sell him until THEY want to. The longer they keep him the more the price will decrease until a zero value in June 2017. The ball is in Liverpool's court when and whose bid they accept IF they want to sell him. If it was solely about Sterling's greed then he would sign the extension, then ask for a transfer at a later date. He is only going to lose money every week with his current stance until Liverpool choose to sell him. Good on Sterling. He could have gotten injured in the latter half of the season and have missed out on everything. Turned down short term finances because (I believe) he wants to play in the CL and win domestic trophies. When did Liverpool last win anything? Minus Gerrard, minus Suarez... they are likely to struggle for the CL again next year. The talk about "not yet ready" or about other players "history is awash with players who moved too soon" doesn't take into consideration of hundreds of players who waited too long and had things go against them. At least Liverpool know about this a long time before (De Gea at United!) his contract is due to run out and so have time to deal with it. If he wasn't English, I doubt any fuss would be made about the situation.

No sympathy for Sterling, Brendan Rogers, Liverpool nor their fans. Sterling still has a lot to prove and is making it harder for himself. Oh and his agent is a cock!

Superstevieharper thought Southampton fans would not criticise players for moving for more money. Wrong. Adam Lallana is regarded as a pariah down here for doing just that. Perhaps it's case of the biter being bitten - a greedy (for that's what he is) Liverpool player of moderate talent only moving for money. Hence my alliance with Will's views above.

If he wants to move to a bigger club and play in the champions league then fair enough but I can't help thinking it's just about money (whether it's him or his agent). As much as I dislike them he's at a big club now and has, and has had this season the chance to be THE player for them and really get the big move with the massive money. He's not done enough this season to justify it though and especially recently is looking a lot like another overhyped englishman (well nearly, I know he wasn't born here but he does play for us). He's still only 20 and just seems to be in a massive rush to get too much too soon like every other kid that does well for a short time in this country. He'll play every week for Liverpool but at his current level I doubt he would at a club higher than them.

Class of 92 and a programme about football Mavericks on the tele tonight. Got me thinking will we ever see great english players like we have in past 20 years or will it just be soulless, greedy, disloyal twats from now on?

Get used to the big wages once the TV deal ticks over. Half a million £ a week players in the Premier League is not far away people

Love or hate Liverpool this has got nothing to do with liking them or not ..as an avid football fan Sterling is everything what sums up everything what has gone wrong with this game ove rthe last 10-15 years with football contracts in general. Player power demanding how much they want ,where they want to go, all for the days when a player loved playing for a club and the fans, yeah if he had ambition and prospects do in the right way protect the club that has looked after him. This player for exampler has been poor all season ,a few wees ago he couldnt even beat the Hull City full back so now he wants away because he thinks he is better than the club he is at ....well i am sorry Sterling the old saying goes ur only as good as ur last game ...and urs was shite .

Who can blame players for chasing money?
I still don't believe RS is solely chasing the money anyway, but what loyalty should he have for Liverpool? He was bought from QPR so hardly owes the club anything. He's willing to play out his contract which was the original agreement. He has gone back on nothing.
If he hadn't have performed, the club would have gotten rid at the end of the contract. He's performed well (hence the interest from the big guns) but the club hasn't matched his performances, so he is looking to move on. Fair enough IMO.
How many of us would stick in a job due to loyalty rather than go elsewhere on more money and to a business with a better reputation? Not many.

Can understand it coming from the club's fans. Every club has an element of support who are partisan and can't see the bigger picture. I had to endure a group of teenagers abusing Clayton away at Boro, for example. However, the wider media wouldn't present someone going from Southampton to a club in the Champions League as a moneygrabber. It would just be seen as career progression.

He left QPR to progress his career/earn more, so bit rich if Liverpool complain if he wants to do it again? Agreed, it's not as if he's a born scouser or Liverpool are the great team they once were. Personally I think he has a lot to prove from what Ive seen this season, and talk of 40 million £ transfer fee seems well over the top, it's a lot of money for a kid who might or might not turn into a great player.

Obviously it stinks.. The whole of football stinks. But I'm not sure why Sterling is being singled out for treatment when he is doing exactly what all the rest of them are... I like Liverpool FC ( or I used to pre Ayre) but their " how dare he " attitude is a tad arrogant when coming from a club who had no qualms about taking him away from another club when he was younger

All this bull about "in the good old days" Stanley Matthews openly admits in his book that if he had been offered more money, he would have gone. It's human nature. And to be honest sterling is going the bin rats a favour. He could sign now for his 200k a week or what ever. And still leave before start of season. This saving Liverpool X amount of pounds in the mean time.

Half a million £ a week players in the Premier League is not far away people when you take a step back and think about it, it really is obscene the amount of money the players at the top level of the sport get payed. They cannot even kick a ball with both feet ffs. Just a case of another overhyped young english player's wages being inflated because he's english. If clubs are stupid enough to pay the kind of money they are doing then you encourage scum sucking agents to demand more. Blame the agents, not the players. The game would be far better off without agents.

Players leaving one club for another because they'll get paid more isn't a new thing thats suddenly 'everything thats gone wrong with the game'. Its been going on forever! The only thing new is the figures you hear mentioned. This is only such a story because the media in general, and ex-players like Souness , Houghton Barnes etc still see Liverpool as this top club that every player in the world should be thrilled beyond belief to play for and not even contemplate leaving. Its like they're all stuck in some kind of time warp from the mid 80s. Liverpool are an also-ran and have been for decades now. They over-achieved last season partly due to a player who has also left for better things since and because the regular top clubs like Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal all had lousy seasons. So a player has the chance to go to a club that will give him champions league football, a chance of winning titles and yes a load more money too. Why wouldn't he want that? The idea he should be happy to stay at Liverpool, because 'it's Liverpool', are settle down for 3 or 4 more seasons of battling it out to finish 5th instead of 6th and the Europa league is a nonsense when he can test himself at a better level and earn a lot more money in the process. As for protecting the club- hes told them he won't be extending his contract so is giving the club the chance to cash in on him. Hes not doing a Sol Campbell where you stall and stall, imply youre staying, then when your deal runs out you leave for free so the new club can pay you a lot of the money they'd have had to spend buying you. There are no stories of him being disruptive or downing tools. Don't see what Sterling's done wrong there myself at all.

One of the major issues in this for me is that fact that he still has two years on his contract - why should anyone need to be re-negotiating that? Sadly contracts quite literally are not worth the paper that they are printed on these days. ;-(

Didn't see the Liverpool fans bleating about loyalty when they were taking Southampton's best players last season. If Sterling can get more money somewhere else good luck to him.
Liverpools fans and hierarchy have some deep seated sense of self importance from somewhere, I listened to a programme the other day when someone from within the club basically said they are different and more special than any other club in world football !!! What a load of arrogant tosh !! Any club means as much to its own supporters as any other whether it be Liverpool or Exeter.
For the record is it just me that doesn't see what all the hype is about Sterling !! Doesn't score nearly enough goals and not enough end product. If he thinks he's getting some stick now can you imagine if he went to Madrid, the fans there are on the verge of lynching Bale for a few under par performances and he's twice the player of Sterling.

only time will decide whether hes doing him any favours or not. If in a years time he's got a Prem title medal after playing in 30 odd PL games for the champions and hes played in the latter stages of the champions league and hes got an extra £5m in his bank account, then it would be hard to argue his agent hasn't done him any favours.
It could go the other way of course and he might go from being a regular for Liverpool to not getting in the ( for example) Man City team very often and hardly playing. Then losing his england place. More money but his career going off the tracks. Been a few who've done that, like Rodwell. I can see the argument that its all happened very quickly for him and hed be better off having another year or two developing at an also-ran club like LFC before stepping up, but by the same token , any player knows it can quickly go badly wrong in terms of injury, especially for a player like Sterling who tends to draw a lot of tackles on himself, so there'll always be the temptation to snatch it whilst its on the table.

The only story i can see here is Liverpool fans/pundits etc... think they're the only team in the world and its impossible for them to believe anyone would want to play for someone else. Plus they like having a moan and a cry when things dont go all their way. Neither of these things are new to me.

The point being that maybe I have got the wrong end of the stick but I really don't understand the comments that are saying they don't blame him wanting to break his contract in order to better himself and we'd do the same in his situation. He's young and will have every opportunity to better himself in the future but, surely, only after he has stuck by the contract. Are contracts meaningless and is honouring a contract from a bygone age?

If he doesnt want to stay at Liverpool then he doesnt want to stay. He owes the club nothing. They poached him from QPR for £600k when he was 15 and they were consistently a Championship club.
If he wants consistent Champions League football, he needs to leave that joke of a football club.

The contract means Liverpool will get £30m or £40m for him, so its not meaningless. I doubt they want him to honour his contract and stay for another 2 years as then he'll leave for nothing.

The money part aside I just think he's being told he's better than he actually is (yet). By going to an even bigger club I don't think he's going to get the consistent run of games to improve and reach his potential with every chance of following the likes of Sinclair, Rodwell, Johnson, Young (to a lesser extent, was sensational at Villa but lost at United for a long time although at least he was mid 20's when he went there), Sturridge nearly fell the same way by going to Chelsea, at 20 years old I just don't see what the rush is when he's already at a big club playing every week.
