Sorry Nick for possibly "stealing your thunder"
It will be 30 years tomorrow since the Heysel Stadium disaster.I see LFC are having a private ceremony. It seems very poor IMO that there has been little mention in the media to commemorate those that died that fateful day.RIP to those who did.

Was just gonna start a thread on this and happened to click on this with no idea it would be about Heysel. Might be worth changing the thread title so that more people contribute to a topic which is very worthy of discussion.

An embarrassing day for English Football, although not wholly the blame of the Liverpool fans. Don't really think it should be that prominent in the media to be honest.
Edit: I don't claim to know every detail about the day so happy to hear more on the event.

The biggest club game in the world, live on telly across Europe, 39 people die due to Liverpool "fans" and it shouldn't be prominent ? It's as prominent as Hillsborough and Valley Parade. I can still remember Jimmy Hill trying to explain what was happening as the programme started. Sent from my SM-G900F using proboards

Am I right in thinking that Ronnie Jepson was at Heysel and convicted for his part in it?

remember racing back from a family day out in Whitby to watch it and running late, listening to the drama on the radio as it happened. Hard to believe they still played the game!
A shocking piece of history thats been largely brushed under the carpet over the years and like Valley parade, gets nothing like the media attention and recognition that Hillsbrough gets. Even a city and people so accomplished at being 'the victim' as they are in Liverpool struggled to pass the blame, though I've always had the impression that they were too happy to try- it being the polices fault, or EUFAs fault or the Juventus fans fault for provoking the trouble, or southern non-scousers fault masquerading as Liverpool fans in that end.
Heysel isn't something that ties in with the self- proclaimed 'specialness' of Liverpool FC.

Also in the Guardian. Scroll down to Phil Neals comments - Shocking. www.theguardian.com/football/2005/apr/03/newsstory.sportJamie Jackson asking for the views of players that were present. Phil Neal Then: Liverpool captain, 34 Now: Merseyside Radio commentator
I'd rather forget that night. It was an ordeal. But, Jamie, why should I help you out? I'm helping you pay your mortgage [by talking to you about Heysel]. When people ask me for my view, they usually have to pay for it. You're asking for my help for nothing. To pay your mortgage, Jamie. I mean, what do you want from me?
I just thought that as the captain of Liverpool football club on that night at Heysel it would be good to hear your view?
Yes but what do you want from me? If I talk to you for a few minutes, then I'm helping you pay your mortgage and what am I getting in return? Do you know what I mean?
Well, I have been to Italy and talked with some of the families of the victims and they say that the trophy should be given back by Juventus to commemorate what happened.
About Juventus? Why are you asking me? Why are you asking someone on the Liverpool side? Juventus made amends very soon. Ask them ... Jamie I'm helping you pay your mortgage. People who want my views pay.
I'm sorry, but everyone else I have spoken to has ...
Great. So you've spoken to people, you've got your views. You've got your Liverpool view, but if you want mine for free, well people pay for them.

No surprise to see this thread turning into bashing the people of Liverpool. www.theanfieldwrap.com Is a good resource if you want to learn more about heysel . I would particularly recommend the podcast special which includes the likes of Peter Hooton and Tony Evans . The podcast can be sourced on the website though I listened through iTunes

What would be enough?
Both clubs & many others will be marking the day with suitable memorials.
It doesn't matter if the media bangs the drum about it or not, although to be fair I have seen plenty of articles & mentions.

Only captains comments can be construed in that way, and even then, I know and so do you that those opinions are shared by many more people, and not just on here. Most of the comments are sympathetic and requesting of more information on the issue, which in part backs up what CS has said about it not being given the media attention some would think it deserves.

Conveniently swept under the carpet.
Anyway, it was the stadiums fault, fair and square. I saw on TV parts of the stadium such as the concrete steps running round with poles in its hands chasing and assaulting Italian fans. That stadium has so much to answer for.

Hillsborough was a disaster.. bad decisions made over a number of years by all concerned in organising and running major cup ties came home to roost..
compounded by smears and lies afterwards concerning the fans that had lost their lives(please note I don't include a large number of those turning up late, as was the practice, in drink with no tickets..) They are at this moment being written out of the history of that tragic day at the latest enquiry..
There were poor decisions made in choosing Heysel and poor policing compounded it, but it was not a disaster it was a crime scene..

Always thought it strange it being referred to as a 'tragedy' or 'disaster'. It was a riot, a murderous rampage, a massacre.
I've read 3 good articles this week, 2 have been linked above, the other was in The Telegraph. One talks of the falling wall being a release - the victims already crushed due to the panic created by the rioting Liverpool fans - who were them seen booting the corpses.
Barry Davies spoke superbly throughout on the utter shame of what had been building over the past decade. Still shocking to hear him say that the chances of the match starting we're looking good after the death toll was revealed.

Whatever possessed the authorities to allow a match to be played that evening is beyond my understanding. Amazed myself....i still remember it like yesterday...in many ways it shocked me more than Hillsborough and Valley Parade. Met two Everton fans in Poland the other day...still bleating on about how they supported Liverpool fans over what happened. I have little truck with such ignorant fans. What was to support? No on meant to kill anyone but it was also far from an accident.

I remember this was the night before my o'level Chemistry and Geography exams......crazy to allow the LFC fans and Juve fans share the terrace behind one of the goals(take heed Town !) separated by crash barrier only(this at the height of hooliganism in our country). Before kick off the Liverpool fans charged the Italians that were manly families(their Ultras being accomodated in the terrace behind the opposite goal)and they completely panicked and ran. Subsequently a retaining wall collapsed this is were the deaths occurred....The Liverpool fans were completely unaware of this collapsed wall and continued to wade into the Juve folk. Kick off was delayed whist the BBC reported deaths amongst the Italian contingent, at this point imo out of decency and respect the match should have been cancelled, but it was said officials/Poilice fearing more bloodshed and revenge attacks from Italian fans, decided the game had to be played to fruition ......Well thats how I remember this sickening event im sure its in the youtube links above
