With the sale of CC I think CP will adopt the Boro style of play with Hogg and Whitehead sitting in front of the defence Butterfield in front of these two then, perm any 3 from the wide men and forwards. Willing to bet now this is our lowest goals against season since we got back in the championship.
Should start at Hull with SS JV NW In front three with IM HB JL on the bench

i suggest dropping deep and protecting the box..possibly the 6 yard box and get back in numbers once the ball is lost anywhere on the pitch..defend the first ball in, then the second and third etc etc.. just a minute? ? im getting those wavy lines across my vision, its like de ja vu or something...? bollox lets just buy the biggest goalkeeper in the world..

I wouldn't rule it out. We need to figure a way of shipping less goals next season, if that means having two midfielders shielding the defence & use the legs of Scanz, Butterfield, Bunn & Wells for fast counter attacks & running the channels then i'm all for it, providing it's not at the detriment of our attacking play. Powell would need to find the right balance of the two.

Think you might be right about Hogg and Whitehead playing together, but how to fit Nahki and Butterfield into that type of system would determine if it is defensive.
I like Nahki, but he isn't big enough to lead the line and not good enough with the ball to be a creative no 10 or a wide left man. Can vaughan play a deeper no 10 role? Can Butterfield play left wing?
how does Nahki fit into your suggestion?
RB CB CB LB DM DM SS JB NW JV
or
RB CB CB LB DM DM SS JB JV NW

RB CB CB LB DM DM SS JB NW JV or RB CB CB LB DM DM SS JB JV NW JV and NW on the pitch together is probably the third worst effective combination of strikers. Reckon it'll be Ishmael and Vaughan as prefered combo, with Wells coming in as an option when they're injured or suspended. So, he should get about 30 games. Thats if he's actually still a Town player this sesson.

Record signing and top scorer last year, on top of that Ishmael was free and due to Vaughan's injuries he has a low value, Nahki is the big asset. Don't think we/Powell can afford to have him as a bench player. If he doesn't fit into the formation, then it would look like he must be going, If he does leave, I think we need another striker capable of 10+ goals in the Championship. But if Nahki is good enough for a big money move to a richer team, it seems strange to discard him so quickly. Which is why the formation question is interesting to me.

I believe they started 10 league games together last season wth 5 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats In the few games that they have started together we achieved some of our better results. Home wins against promoted Watford, playoff team Ipswich and away wins at Wigan, Millwall and Forest In fact each of 3 times we lost, either Wells or Vaughan was subbed off through injury early in the first half (Middlesboro home and away, and L666s at home) IMO when we play 2 strikers if Wells and Vaughan are fit they should always be the front 2.

I am encouraged by CP's comments that we look a much better team when we are giving it a go, rather than sitting back.

4-2-3-1
------------------------------------------------------Smithies ----------Smith----------------------------HUdson ------------------Lynch-----------------------Davidson ---------------------------------------Hogg-----------------------------Whitehead -------------------Scanz----------------------------------Butterfield---------------------Bunn --------------------------------------------------------Vaughan/Miller
He'll use this formation away
At home a sort of 3-5-2
----------------------------------------------------------Smithies -----------------------------------Smith-------------------Hudson------------Lynch -----------Scanz------------------------------Hogg---------------------Whitehead------------------Davidson ------------------------------------------------------------Butters---------------------------- --------------------------------------------------JV--------------------Wells(Miller if Wells goes to Burnley)
Subs..Gkeeper Lolley Wallace/new CB? Bunn Billing Holmes Wells/Miller/Charles
We could do with one of the U21 full backs being able to fill in if Davidson Smith or Whitehead get injuried or we bring in versatile defender

Think we will have a few formations this season for different scenarios in game and also for different games we play ..this is why preseason is good to try things out and see what players u can use with these different things and build confidence at same time
