I hope Wallace finally steps up. He has shown in some games what he is capable of and I still have bright hopes for his future with us. Think some were very harsh on him last season

My take: Wilkinson and Hammill - I expected problems down that side when they came on but they did well and caused more problems than the first choice did. It was Billy Boyle that came on for Davidson. And I thought he played well, too, but Davidson was awesome.

Yeah was all a bit tepid, the most exciting thing being the car on fire on the way back.
Davidson looked good, not as impressed by Dempsey as some but he had some nice touches. Jordy Hulahoops is going to get the dogs from folk around me - languid. Thought Nakhi looked ok as well.
For those of you worried by the centre half situation not a lot to assuage your fears imho. Hudson doesn't inspire confidence, would love someone truly commanding alongside Lynch.
No idea How we'll line up against Hull. You'd have to think Smithies, Davidson, Hudson, Lynch, Whitehead, Butterfield and Scannell. But apart from that god only knows. Lots of options, let's just hope they haven't dusted off the Lee Clarke Team Picking Bingo Machine.

From what you guys have seen this season, if - as jb1 rightlycomments - Smith does not make it as a right back (and I, too, have my doubts), can you see Cranie as a right back, and not as reserve/utility centre back?

Hudson - complete liability at times. Zero composure on the ball and poor decision making. Three times Deportivo ran at him with the ball. Three times he backtracked to his own area without closing down the man. Calamity. Wallace looked a lot better than him. Got to be Wallace and Lynch starting at Hull.
Dempsey - never stopped running. Looks like a great find. Box to box. Reminded me of Hogg but with better vision and feet. Passing was a little off at times however he always looked to drive forward.
Whitehead - steady. Did all the simple things right but looks to be carrying a bit of timber.
Davidson - looked comfortable on the ball. Made some good interceptions, looked to move forward and played some neat passes. Just lacking that bit of pace and has a shit hair style.
Hiwula - very quiet but showed some lightening pace and a quality first touch.
Wells impressed me the most out of the old faces. Looks to have developed his link up play and guarded the ball well.

Think he's a better prospect than Wilkinson tbh but it's hard to know what to do with the centre halves. They graduate at 18 from the academy but across the country very few centre halves play first team football at that age. We've got Boyle, Wilkinson, Wright (out on loan) and Horsfall now in the development squad plus Wallace and Smith to back up Hudson and Lynch. It's hard to get them any competitive game time.

Town will be wary of buying a right back. It wouldn't surprise me if Jacob Hanson is the first choice right back by christmas.

Think one or two being a bit Harsh on Dempsey. After a nervous first twenty (understandable when he's never played with players of this quality on either side before, nor played at his new home stadium before) he settled down well and grew as the game went on. Most around me were very happy with him. I agree entirely with Giggity's description of him:
'never stopped running. Looks like a great find. Box to box. Reminded me of Hogg but with better vision and feet. Passing was a little off at times however he always looked to drive forward'
Davidson played well, but I'm not too sure he's ever been told he's also got a right foot. Early days for everyone, but our squad is starting to look interesting.

How come town fans applaud a hoof downfield that drifts out pf play, but groaned when Dempsey had a shot that went over the bar?

Think some were very harsh on him last season Good post and well said. Wallace was good at Rochdale when he came on and had a good game tonight. He looks stronger and more composed and I hope he can keep it up. Confidence is important and suporters can help with that.

Not a save made...
I would have made them play on til someone scored
If that was the case when do you think it would have finished ??

I thought Wallace played well too (albeit under very little pressure), but he reminds me of Jon Dyson, who always played well 95% of the time and each of his mistakes seemed to lead to a goal, however, I think there is a footballer in Wallace.
I thought Whitehead protected the back 4 really well and we look more organised with him there, and he possesses that little streak of nastiness too.
IMO Hiwula dropped back to receive the ball well but it's a bit hard to judge his ability on that showing as the service to him was not great.
Dempsey will play better games for sure, yet he showed me enough to believe we have another gem with him - a genuine box-box midfielder with a great engine, but who needs a bit better end product. Played with a great maturity though & never went missing.
Davidson, for me, was deservedly M-O-M for his willingness to get both up & down the pitch and show some nice touches, though I would hope for some better end product in the final third.
Overall, it did exactly what it said on the tin, a great workout fitness-wise for the boys as they spent quite a bit of the game out of possession but gave us no indication of how they can play in the frenzy that is Championship football.

My take: Smithies - nowt to do Davidson - looks athletic, strong, all left foot though. Wallace - played well, kept it simple didn't get turned or caught ball watching like he usually does Hudson - gave the ball away a couple of times didn't have much to do Smith - got away with assaulting their winger just as he was about to be toasted. Needs to really kick on or will not make it as a championship right back as exposed by pace and has poor positional sense at times Butterfield - town's best player for me, would have looked just as comfortable in the deportivo side Whitehead - looks heavier than I remember from his premier league days but that is to be expected with his age, played a disciplined role in front of the back four and this helped Hudson and Wallace immeasurably as they were never really exposed to players running directly at them with pace. If Whitehead starts for us every week there is no way we will concede anything like the number of goals we did last year but we will also not score as many either. Dempsey - looked decent, played with confidence in his home debut, had a ew balls cut out which led to Deportivo counter attacks but looks like an established player not a young kid. Scannell - quiet game for him but looked a lot better when Lynch came on and started hitting him with cross field balls Wells - worked hard and looked lively and dangerous, also looked a bit stronger than last year. Hiwula - looked quick but struggled to get involved at times and lacks the strength of older more established players. I imagine he will be an impact substitute to begin the season. Subs Lynch - powerful and played well with Wallace. Nice to see Hogg and Vaughan fit Lolley looked to be really working on his defensive duties, will need to prove that he can defend or the right back will frequently exposed down that flank. Wilkinson and Hammill - I expected problems down that side when they came on but they did well and caused more problems than the first choice did. Cranie - didn't do much or see much ball so difficult to comment Holmes - got five minutes Murphy - nowt to do. Deportivo - looked extremely dangerous on the break but pedestrian after they made five subs in the second half, their full back actually looked stronger than Scannell which was amazing really and they had two players who were like split sh!t - just ask Tommy Smith! Good post, agree with most of it, apart from whitehead, he was shocking kept giving the ball away, would rather hogg in that position Another Peltier situation in the making, Boro moved Whitehead to right back for a reason, be amazed if he holds down a central midfield position imo Hogg a better proposition there

I left today thinking we will definitely miss the mobility and aerial strength of coady and gobern. I hope I'm wrong. I'd say we definitely need another central midfielder too. We won't get 30 games out of hogg. Butter field needs not to be flogged like last year. Whitehead I'd be trying to manage a bit. He looked leggy to say the least. Dempsey looks fit but is a young player and it's his first year at champs level.
For me ok convinced we need another central midfielder esp as I suspect 3 out of the 4 will be selected with scannell given more license on one wing.

It's funny how run-of-the-mill Championship players, suddenly appear much better once they don't play for us any more. Some of them are of course (Arfield).

Glad we are now trying 4231, always thought that if Wells could adapt to being a lone striker it would be the formation that best suits us.

Strangely, I wasn't all that impressed with Wells last night. He appeared to give up too easily and was quite petulant. There was one instance in the first half where he let the ball bounce in the area from a high ball in. Not sure if he is lacking confidence but thought he was very average.
