I remember the game .. motd hadn't been for years... We were at the top they were at the bottom .. and we got stage fright and blew it .. one of the results which ensured we didn't go up.. the two other standouts being the consecutive defeats at hull and burnley I can't remember that game, but I do the other 2 you mention! Weren't we favourites to go up before those 2 & then it all went tits up? Burnley away midweek, I think we scored early doors & then lost (might have been 4-2). Then Hull away on the Saturday - think we scored first in that too, then lost 2-1, with the winner being deflected in off the ref! Yeah we lost at hull .. who were at the bottom.. on the Saturday .. and burnley .. who were upper MOD table on the Tuesday ..they did for us

When that 80/81 team were good, they were very, very good but, oh boy, they could stink the place out too (including that game v Chester where the MOTD edit was exceptionally flattering). I blame Tracy Austin.

We did lose 4-2 to Burnley in that evening game , I remember coming out of the ground and I think most Town fans realised we had blown it after that game . Still great days though !

No, There is a cracking one that shows all the framework.
Nice one of the terrace too.
Where does the WSC author get the 16000 crammed in from ? I don't think some of the young uns will appreciate just how big the terrace actually was,

Nice one, That framework allied to a low barrel roof must have been the secret to such a small end being able to generate so much noise ? imo,

The old Leeds road ground had a far better atmosphere than the John Smiths , but it would have cost far to much money to bring it up to todays health and safety standards. The best game atmosphere I witnessed was against West Ham in that early 70s cup game ,and will never forget when the town boot girls kicked ten bells of shit out of a group of Hammers fans who tried to take the shed. This was the game when a packed shed was rocking from one end to another, and also the best game i have ever witnessed in my 54 years a fan. The one thing that's missing today is that atmospheric smell when a mass of fans are packed in together, and all the singing banter from fans who highlighted the area of Kirklees and district where they came from. I seem to remember the Mirfield crew having the biggest following in the shed in the early 70s , this was closely followed by the singing coming from those from Dewsbury , Brackenhall , Spenboro and Almondbury. Happy days This was also the day my sister got married, 26th Feb 1972, Town win 4-2 and I'm sulking at her wedding !!!!!!! I remember sprinting to the paper-shop to get the Pink to read all about it
What makes it worse though . . . he was a bloody L33ds fan too, I've still not forgiven her

They obviously opened the gates at half time on this footage ... To anyone of a certain age this is tv gold .... Dave Cowlings nephew might enjoy one of his trademark crosses.. And I love Tracy Austin doing the Alan Lee at around 4 minutes That and they allowed all the town support in the old away end to move to the cowshed end second half. Those were the days.

Is there anyone else other than Suggy who remembers this massive Mirfield following that outnumbered all the others and totally dominated the Cowshed?

And I love Tracy Austin doing the Alan Lee at around 4 minutes In those days a lot of fans would go to the end we were attacking as you could move freely from the Bradley Mills end to the cowshed, once they stopped that a lot of the 'singing section' moved to the back of the East Terrace, 'Cowshed, cowshed give us a song'

T'was definitely better as a ground before they put up all the safety barriers (but those barriers did give us kids somewhere to stand ). Out of interest, which season did they add them?

When asked about the Burnley game Mick Buxton said " We committed Hara-Kari tonight" classic quote Remember the game well, Town attacked but forgot to do any defending
